'ro ALL WHoM IT MAY GONGERN: i Y
Be it known that I, E. H. ASHCROFT, of the city of Lynn, in thecounty of Essex, in the State of Massa` chusetts, have inventedra new und useful Improvement in Steam-Condensers, 82e.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to 4the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in a certain device, to be hereafter described, whereby the waste,or exhaust steam of an engine is readily condensed and utilized by being returned to a suitable vessel an'd used over again, -a matter of not only economy, but for obvious reasons otherwise desirable.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describeits construction and operation. In the drawings- Figure 1 represents an elevation of my machine,
Figure 2 a vertical central section of the same, andv Figure a' topview.
i A represents an ordinary exhaust or waste-steam pipe,'in which I place several perforated or showeringppans, B, which are fedwith cold water, which is forced up the tube. This tube C is placed inside of another onc,D, to prevent 4thewater in C from being heated by the exhaust steam passingup A at its lower part. As the steam ascends A it is met by a shower of spray from the lower showering-pan. Should any pass it, the
vsame will he met by a similar shower from the next upper pan, and soon, having as many as maybe found necessary The water to supply the showering-pans can be furnished from a reservoir located a'bovethem, or it can be supplied through pipe C by an ordinary force-pump. At the top of-this pipe it follows around an elbow, c, which has one or more openings, a, through which the water empties into one or more divisions in supplyvessel E. I show three openings a, and three divisions Z1, c, and cZ Each of these divisions or chambers has a hole, f, in itslbottom, fromwhieh lead pipes c to the several showeringfpans B, thus supplying them. The divisions in the supply-vessel E are not absolutely necessary. I
The water supplied to the pans, iissuing from the orifices in the same, falling'in fine showers, and condens-A V s l n t s I o 4 1 mg the ascending waste steam, also returns with 1t to a tank, being caught and conducted o 1n any suitable way, not necessary to describe, and all can be used over again in the boiler or otherwise, andra large percentage is thus saved of the best kind of pure and soft water. The end oi` the exhaust escape pipe proper, Which leads into the waste or conducting pipe A, may have a hood over it, or be marde with a noch or elbow', so that the condensed steam or water cannot fall back into it. Any mechanical `fitting is obvious by which to curry it oli' at the bottom of pipe A.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to'secure by Letters Patent of the United States, isi The combination and arrangement of the waste pipe A, showering-pans B, reservoir-E, and supply pipe C,
operating in tlremanner substantially as shown and described, and for'the purpose set forth.
' E. H. AS-ICROFT.
