PATENT OFFICE.
ADOLF HOLLAND, OF MAGDEBURG, GERMANY.
CENTRlF UG AL MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 703,728, dated July 1, 1902. Applieationfiled September 24, 1901. Serial No. 76,353. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern: v Be it known that I, ADOLF HOLLAND, a citizen of the. Empire of Germany, residing in Magdeburg, Germany, have invente'd'certain new and useful Improvements in Centrifugal Machines, of which the following is a specification.
a centrifugal machine employed in separating molasses from sugar, and relates particularly to means for separating the denser from the less dense molasses at the proper stage in the operation of drying the sugar.
To this end the invention consists of a centrifugal machine comprising a casing having a suitably-supported base-plate that is provided with discharge-openings, a rotatable drum mounted in said casing, and an adjustable collecting-plate for guiding the flow of molasses to one or the other of said discharge-- openings, as will be more fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which' I Figure 1 is a vertical section of 'nfy'improved centrifugal machine. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section thereof on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the lower part of the casing with the collecting-plate. Figs. 4 and 5 are vertical sections of themachine having modified forms of collecting-plates,
and Fig. 6 is a detail view of auoth er'formof collecting-plate.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the cylindrical body portion of the casing 9f w my centrifugal machine, having a suitably-.
supported base-plate B. Within the casing is mounted upon the vertical rotary shaft S the drum 0, the periphery of which consists of perforated sheet metal.
The base-plate B is provided with an up-;
wardly-extending circumferential flange B, that has an interior shoulder upon which the cylindricalobody portion A of the casing is seated. Adjacent and concentric to the circumferential flange B is the partition-flange B so that the bottom ofthe casing is divided into the compartments a and I), having, respectively, the discharge-openings c and d.
The lower edge of the cylindrical body porition A is provided withan inwardly-flaring rim'e, that covers the compartment a. This rim e is provided with a plurality of elongated openings 10, which are arranged parallel withthe edge of the rim and alternately in two c'oncentriccircles. An annular col- .lecting-plate f is seated upon the inwardly- This'invention relates to improvements in flaring rim 6 and is provided with openingsf, similarly arranged to openings 70, and between the openings extend the strengthening-ribs Z.
The annular collecting-plate f is arranged to have a partial rotary movement, so that the openings k and f can be caused to register or to be closed. The means for imparting motion to the collecting-plate f consists of the handpiece g, that is connected therewith and. projects through the slot A which is approximately the same length as the openings 1c and is protected by the guard-plate 71, so as to prevent the molasses from passing therethrough. Arranged in the casing at a suitable height and between the drum 0 and the cylindrical body portion A is a steam- "pipe 11, that is provided with a plurality of I perforations (not shown) that discharge steam outwardly-upon the interior surface of the cylindrical bodyportion of the casing, so as -to accelerate the How of molasses down the interior surface thereof." The molasses that ;is separated from the'lsugar flows down the interior'suriface of thecylindrical body portion A of the'casin'g'f to the collecting-plate, which, according to the character of the mo- ,l-lasses, is directed into the compartment a or b, from which it is passed off'through the discharge-opening c or (1, so that the molasses containing considerable sugar can be separated from the molasses containing little or no sugar.
As shown in the modificatio'n,.,Fig..4, the collecting-plate f is adapted to beraised or lowered by any suitable means, (notshowr'n) "so as to uncover or cover the compartment a. The diameter of the "collecting-plate f 'is somewhat smaller than the interior diameter of the casing, so that when the collectingplate is raised there is provided sufficient space between its outer edge and the interior surface of the cylindrical body portion of the casingto permit the molasses to pass into the compartment a, and when the collecting-plate is lowered the molasses passes over its upper surface and discharges into the compartment 1).
The modification shown in Fig. 5 is a collecting-plate f that is also adapted to be raised or lowered in order to direct the flow of molasses through the discharge-openings c or d, while Fig. 6 shows the collectingplate as being composed of a plurality of segments that are hingeably mounted, sothat they can be adjusted to direct the flow of molasses as desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a centrifugal machine, the combination of a casing having a cylindrical body portion seated in a suitably-supported base-plate, said base-plate being provided with dischargeopenings, a rotatable drum mounted in said casing, and an adjustable collecting-plate disposed below the bottom of said drum for directing the flow of liquid to either dischargeopening, substantially as set forth.
2. In a centrifugal machine, the combination of a casing having a suitably-supported base-plate, said base-plate being provided with discharge-openings,a rotatably-mounted drum in said casing, a partition-flange provided on said base-plate, and an adjustable collecting-plate arranged in contact with the interior surface of said casing and disposed below the bottom of said drum for directing the flow of liquid to either side of said partition-flange, substantially as set forth.
3. In a centrifugal machine, the combination, with a rotatably-monnted drum, of a casing provided with a cylindrical body portion, a base-plate having a circumferential flange and a concentric partition-flange, said cylindrical body portion being provided with an inwardly-flaring rim extending from said circumferential flange to said partitionflange, said inwardly-flaring rim havinga plurality of openings, and an adjustable collecting-plate having openings to register with said openings in the rim, said base-plate having suitably-arranged discharge-openings, substantially as set forth.
4. In a centrifugal machine, the combination of a casing having a cylindrical body, a base -plate having a circumferential flange provided with a shoulder for receiving the cylindrical body portion, a concentric flange adjacent said circumferential flange forming two compartments of said base-plate, each compartment having a discharge-opening, an inwardly-flaring rim provided at the lower edge of said cylindrical body portion and disposed upon saidflanges, said rim being provided with a plurality of elongated slots alternately arranged in concentric lines, an adjustable collecting-plate supported on said rim and having similarly-arranged slots, a handpiece connected with said collectingplate and projecting through an opening in said cylindrical body portion, a cover-plate arranged over said opening for the handpiece, and a steam-pipe arranged in said casing with a plurality of perforations disposed toward the interior surface of said casing, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ADOLF HOLLAND.
