In the form shown this table is provided with a screw-rod 36, to which may be fitted a'hollow type-Wheel blank 36', Fig. 12, having at the larger end a spaced-off rim 36", in each space of which the desired design, letter, or character may be formed. In Figs. 1 and 2 a blank of this kind is shown in position upon rod 3G, it being held thereon by any suitable device, such as a wrench 37, fitting into a squared portion or groove 363 of the rod and serving to turn the same and clamp the blank between the table and said wrench. Rod 3G is shown located at an angle to the platen, and the latter has adepending forwardly-inclined apron against which the rim portion 3G" of the blank is supported and held in proper position to be operated on by the tool or tools hereinafter described.
Depending from the platen and passing through openings in the portion 21 of the frame are rods 39, spring-actuated in one direction in some suitable manner-for instance, by coiled springs 40 40', located between abutments or nuts 402 413 on the rods and the bottom of part 21 of the frame normally to retain the platen in its lowest position, but yet permitting a slight upward movement thereof under the control of meehanisrn hereinafter set forth.
A depending tubular leg 32' is formed on or attached to the offset portion 32 of platen 25, and in this leg is fitted one extremity of a rod 4l, having rounded, preferably ballshaped, ends 41' 412, the rounded lower part of said rod being mounted in a socket 43 ofa lever 44, having a slot 45, through which a pin or bolt 46 passes for pivotally and loosely connecting said lever to brackets 21', depending from the flanged portion 21 of the frame. At its other end rod 44 is provided with a rounded or ball-shaped tip 44', which is re-' ceived in a socket 47 of an adjustable connector (designated generally by 48) composed of two sections 4S' 482, in the latter of which socket 47 is formed. This connector may be adjusted in anydesired manner, butfor illustration of a convenient means of adjustment section 48' overlaps the other section 482, and said section 48' is provided with a series of perforations or slots 48:,through which screws 484, entering openings 4S5 with threaded walls in section 482, maybe passed.
At its upper end connector 4S is equipped with a rounded or bail-shaped portion 49, fitting in a socket 50 on a chuck-sleeve 51, in the chuck 52 of which is secured a two-part follower consisting of a lower portion 53, having a tip 54, shown, preferably, of conical form, which cooperates with the pattern 24, mounted on removable slide 23 of bed-plate 22, and an upper supporting portion 55, upon which the lower portion or follower proper is mounted to reciprocate, which is held by chucks 5G and 57, projecting from a sleeve 56', held in the eye 58 of a U-shaped or twoarmed swivel 59, having conical bearingpoints 00 6l, received in ball-bearing sockets 62 (i3 of a sleeve 64, mounted on a spindle G5, adjustably secured to a connection 70, shown as a level', hereinafter described. Sleeve 64 is formed at each end with a ball-raceway 64' 642, cooperating with a iiange 66 and with an adjustable thimble G7 on bolt 65, the latter being shown equipped with nuts G8 69, respectively, at its opposite ends, and this spindle may be adjustably secured at any desired point in a longitudinal slot of the connection or lever 70, the latter being provided with a thick lower end slotted at 702 and pivoted at 703 between the arms of a collar 7l, secured to an end of the tube or shaft 27, which, as before stated, is connected with the platen 25 and is mounted for rocking and reciprocatory movements in a bearing in the frame. Adjustably attached to the lever 70, as by a slot-and-bolt connection 71' or in any other suitable way, is a connecting portion 72, having a socket in which is fitted the ball or rounded tip 73 of a rod 74, passing loosely through the hollow shaft 27, and surrounding this rod is a sleeve 75, having rounded ends, the outer end of which is adapted t0 bear against the lever 70 at the edges of the socketin connection 72, and the inner end of which is adapted to be received in a socket 7G, carried by a stud 77, mounted on the frame and having a stem passing through a slot in one side of said shaft. (See Figs. 3 and 13.) Said sleeve 75 thus being interposed between the lever 70 and its fixed center serves to retain the lever from approaching its said center. At its rear portion said rod 74 is surrounded by a coiled spring 78, which bears against the stud 77 at one end and against the face of an adjustable nut 79 at its opposite end, said nut engaginga screwthread of the rod and serving to adjust the tension ot' the spring. The rounded end of rod 74 serves as a fulcruin for the lever 70, so
that when the upper end of the latter is moved toward and from the frame of the machine the lower end, through the connection 705, reciprocates the hollow shaft 27 in its bearing in the frame and moves the platen with it, or whenever lever 70 is moved in a plane at right angles to that just mentioned the lever swings laterally about the same fulcrum and through the connection 703 rotates the shaft 27, which through the gearing 272 2S' rotates the platen. For any movement of the lever between the two planes a compound movement will of course be imparted to the hollow shaft and platen. The spring "78 renders the fulcrum of the lever a yielding one and permits free play and less friction between the end of the sleeve 75 and the socket 76.
As will readily appear by the connections thus far described, the platen will be caused to traverse a path conforming to that of the pattern 24 and will have the necessary Inovements imparted thereto to reproduce the design or form.
At its upper end the rod 55 is fitted in a chuck-sleeve 55', said sleeve having a ballshaped end 552, received in a socket 80, of considerable length, carried by a slide 81, adjustably fitted to the standard 202, said slide being secu red to said standard in any suitable IIO Way, that shown being a split connection, by which the ways of the slide are adapted to be compressed upon the standard by a bolt and nuts'82. (See Fig.l11.) To retain the ballshaped tip 552 of chuck-sleeve 55' in the socket 80, a spring connection may be employed, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 11, said connection consisting of a leaf-spring 83, an arm 84 of which is secured to the slide or bracket 81 by a bolt 85. Projecting from the ball or rounded end 552 of sleeve 55 is an arm 553, which is received withina loop 83 of spring 83, the walls of which loop serve to limit the swinging movement of said sleeve 55 and the parts connected therewith.
Mounted in bearings 86 and 87 at the top of the frame is a shaft 88, having a pulley 89, to which a belt for rotating said shaft may be applied, and at one end this shaft carries a large wheel or disk 90, having a friction-surface 90. Journaled for swinging movement on a stud or pin 91 of the frame is a head 92, chambered out to receive the spindles 93 and l 94 for carrying the cutting or graving tools by which a design is formed upon the cylindrical blank shown or other object. These spindles are equipped with ordinary chucks 95 and 96 for holding the cutting or graving tools 97 and 98 therein, and each spindle is provided with a friction-pulley 99, which may be thrown into contact with the driving-surface of wheel 90.
At each side the head 92 is provided with a detent 92 and 922 for coperating with latches 100 and 101, suitably pivoted to the frame, and for disconnecting either of these latches when required' a lever 102, having a handgrasp 102', is shown pivoted in an opening of the frame and extending through said frame to a convenient point on the exterior thereof. Also secured to the frame are springs 103 and 104, one of which is compressed when the head is swung to throw a pulley carried by an spindle thereof into contact with the wheel 90, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5, and the other of which is compressed when the pulley on the other spindle carried by the head is thrown.

When the latch holding the head in position for one of the spindles to be driven is released, the spring in engagement With said head at this time immediately throws the head away from the wheel, thereby disengaging the pulley therefrom. AS illustrated, two chuckspindles, one carrying a tool for roughing out the design to be reproduced and the other a tool for nishing the same, are shown and described; but my invention is not limited to this arrangement, as either one or a numberl of chuck-spindles may be carried by said head without departure therefrom. Furthermore, my invention is not limited to the arrangement of tool-spindles described and of gearing for driving the same, for this construction may be variously modified and still be within the purview thereof.
' My invention operates as follows: A slide 23, carrying the desired design 24 to-be reproduced upon the blank-for instance, the letter S (shown in Fig. 4)-is inserted in the guideway in bed-plate 22, and the follower 53, carrying tip 54, is swung by hand into position to coperate therewith. As this tip is forced downward the sleeve 51, to which it is connected, will carry with it the connector 48, which will depress the free end of pivoted lever 44, the stroke of which is limited by the adjustable stop 110, and through the rod 41 raise the platen 25, rocking it upon the quadrants 27' 272, and cause the roughingout tool carried by head 92 to enter the blank on said platen to the desired depth. After this action has taken place the tip is caused to follow the contour of the design, and in tracing the curved outlines thereof the rod 55 will be swung on ball 552 in socket 80 and cause the swivel 59, in which said rod is mounted, to conform to this movement, thereby operating the connection 70 and rocking the cylinder 27, the gear-quadrants 27 and 272 of which impart a back-and-forth movement to the platen. When the follower approaches another part of the design' and is moved back and forth on its connection 552 in socket in another direction, it will through the universal connections attached to the swivel 59 and other connections described cause the cylinder 27, and therefore the platen, to be reciprocated to conform to this movement. ter, or design 0f any desired contour may readily be reproduced upon the blank or other article carried by the platen, and the scale of reproduction may be varied as desired by the adjustments specified. In other words, by the universal and yielding connections described the platen and blank thereof are made to conform in movements exactly to and follow the contour of the design. After the design has been roughed out on the blank lever 102 is manipulated to release the catch holding the cutter-head while the roughingout tool is operating, and spring 104 will then throw head 92 to a position to carry the pulley on the spindle 95 out of engagement with the driving-gear 90, when the pulley on the spindle 96, carrying finishing-tool 98, may be brought into engagement with the drivving-gear, and the follower and its tip will then again be caused to retrace the design, and said tool will complete and finish the same. After one design has been formed on the spaced-off blank said blank is manipulated to bring another portion thereof into position to have a new design formed thereon. A slide carrying the desired new design is placed in position, and the operations above set forth are repeated. In this way any desired design may be reproduced upon a blank, and the machine is adapted for a wide range of utility, for by the employment of interchangeable patterns it will readily be seen In this way a character, let- IOO IIO
that the scope of the invention is unlimited and that one form or another form may be reproduced at will.
Vhile manually-actuated means are shown for causing the various movements of the platen, these movements may be imparted thereto automatically, if desired, and the invention is not limited to the devices described.
While a roughing-out c utter and a finishing-cutter are preferably employed for forming the design upon the blank, the invention is not limited to such cutters, fora single cutter may be employed with good results and still be within the scope thereof. So, too, the platen and blank may be held stationary and the cutter be caused to follow the outline of the design, if desired.
Many changes may be made in the details of the mechanism described, and the invention is not limited to the precise construction shown and described.
Having described my invention, I claiml. The combination, with a platen for supporting the work and a tool for forming a design or. said work,of a two-part member adapted to follow a pattern, both of said parts swinging about a point in the axis of one of them, and separate connections between both parts of the following memberand one of the elements cooperating with the work.

The combination, with framework, of a tool-carrying head mounted for swinging movement. thereon; a catch projecting from each side of said head; latches pivoted to the framework on each side thereof and adapted to coperate with the catches of the head; a pivoted lever for actuating said latches; and means for swinging the head when one of the latches is released.

The combination, with framework, of a head pivoted thereto; chuck spindles mounted in bearings of the head; a gear carried by each of said chuck-spindles; a driving-gear; a shaft mounted in bearings of the framework and carrying said driving-gear; means for actuating said shaft; latches for holding the head in either of its extreme positions; means for releasing said latches; and means for swinging the head when one of the latches is released.
71. A platen having an offset portion with a chambered extension, combined with a table for supporting the work; and means entering the chambered extension and adapted to raise the platen and having a universal connection therewith to permit lateral movement.

The combination, with a platen mounted for universal movements on the frame, of a device passing through the frame and geared with said platen; a lever for rocking and reciprocating said device; a swivel secured to said lever; a sleeve having ball-bea rings carried by the swivel; a pattern; a follower; and intermediate devices connecting the swivel and follower.
73. The combination, with a work-support, of a pattern-follower including a rod for actuating the work-support, said pattern-follower rod being carried by a swivel having ball-bearings, and connections between the swivel and work-support.
74. The combination, with a work-support,
of a pattern-follower including a rod for actuating the work-support, said pattern-follower rod being carried by an adjustablymounted swivel, a sleeve having ball-bearings pivoted to said swivel; and connections between thc sleeve and work-support.

The combination, with a platen, of a rotary tool-spindle; a rocking and longitudinally-movable device in engagementwith the platen; a lever; and connections for actuating said device; a swivel carried by the lever; a sleeve having ball-bearings pivoted to the swivel; a bolt passing through said sleeve and secured to the lever; a follower comprising a rod and a follower-tip, said rod being fitted to the swivel; said follower-tip adapted to be freely movable on said rod; and a pattern cooperating with the follower.

The combination, with aplaten having a central opening and equipped with gearsurfaces on its under side, of a hollow shaft having gear-surfaces intermeshing with those of the platen; means for locking said shaft and the platen together for longitudinal movement; a collar secured to the shaft; a lever pivoted to said collar and carrying at one end a bolt; a sleeve having ballbearings fitted between anges on said bolt; a swivel having conical surfaces in contact with other ball-bearings on said sleeve; a follower comprising a rod and a follower-tip, said rod being secured to the swivel; a chucksleeve mounted for sliding movement on said rod and carrying the follower-tip; a pattern with which said follower cooperates; a connector having a ball-and-socket connection with said chuck-sleeve; a lever having a balland-socket connection with said connector; and means actuated by the lever for raising the platen.

The combination, with a bed-plate having ways, of interchangeable patterns carried by slides adapted to be received in said Ways; a platen mounted for universal movements on the frame and having a chambered extension; a work-support carried by the platen; a follower` having a socket; a connector carrying a ball adapted to be received in said socket; a lever pivoted to the under side of the frame and having universal connection at one end with said connector; and a rod having ball-shaped ends one of which is received in a socket in said lever and the other in the chambered extension of the platen.
78. rlhe combination, with aplaten mounted for universal movements, of apattern, and a follower comprising a rod, and a followertip sleeved upon said rod a sleeve at the upper part of said rod andhavingaball-shaped end; a socket adjustably connected with the frame and with which the ball-shaped end of said sleeve engages; and a bowed leaf-spring for holding the ball on said sleeve in place in said socket.

spring on said rod; a stud'fitted on the frame and projectingwithin the shaft; a sleeve sur rounding the rod andhaving one end rounded to iit a socket in the stud; a swivel having abolt fitted in a longitudinal slot of the lever, attached to said sleeve; a sleeve mounted on said bolt and having ball-bearings; a follower-rod secured in an eye of the swivel; a chuck-sleeve carryinga follower-tip mounted for sliding movements onsaid rod; a socket at one end of said chuck-sleeve a connector having a ball adapted to be received` in said socket; a lever pivoted to the framework and having a long arm with a ballshaped end received into a socket at one end of said connector; a universal connection between the short end of said' lever and the platen; and a pattern cooperating with the follower.

The combination, with a platen mounted for rising-and-falling movements, of rods secured to said platenand projecting through openings in the frame; springs surrounding said rods and pressing at one end against the frame and at the other end against nuts on said rods; a pivoted lever mounted for reciprocatory movement on the frame and having a socket at one end; means for actuating said lever; anda rod having ball-shaped ends con-v necting said lever with the' platen.v

The combination, with a platen, of means for actuating said platen; a follower for operating said actuating means; a pattern; a swinging head mounted inthe framework and carrying a pair of separated chuck-spindles; roughing-out and 1finishing tools respectively mounted in saidchuck-spindles; gearing on the chuck-spindles; and a drivingwheel journaled on a shaft mounted inbearings of the frame; so located that the gearing on either chuck-spindle may be brought opposite and in contact-with its side face by swinging the head.-

The combination with a follower-tip adapted to be moved in an axial direction and transversely to its axis, of a platen adapted to be reciprocated and to be rocked; means actuated on the transverse movement of the follower-tip to reciprocate said platen; and means actuated on the axial movement of the follower-tip to rock saidplaten.
