ROBERT W. HAULBROOK, OF'MAYSVILLE, GEORGIA.
. CULTIVATOR PL OW ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N 0. 703,656, dated July 1, 1902. Application filed April 5, 1902- Serial No. 101,580. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT W. HAUL- BROOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maysville, in the county of Banks and State of Georgia, have inventeda new and useful Cultivator Plow Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved cultivator at-' tachment adapted for use in connection with an ordinary single-shovel plow to provide the latter with a plurality of cultivating points or shovels; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices hereinafter fully set forth and claimedi In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is' a perspective view of a single-shovel plow of common construction provided with my improved attachment, whereby the plow is provided with a plurality of cultivor points or shovels. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View of my improved attachment. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail sectional views of the same, taken,-respectively, on planes indicated by the lines do and l) b of Fig. 2.
In the embodiment of my invention I pro-- vide an extensible frame 1, which comprises a pair of U-shaped sections 2 3, the respective front and rear arms 2 and 3 of which overlap each other. The front arms of the said sections are formed with bent guideears 4, which engagethe under sides of said front arms, respectively, and the rear arms of said. sections are formed with bent guideears 5, which engage the upper edges of said arms, respectively, and thereby the said frame has its respective sections connected together, with the arms thereof slidably related to each other, so that the said frame is expansible longitudinally with respect to its own major axis and laterally with respect to the plow to which it may be attached. The respective arms of the said frame are engaged by clip-bolts 6, by means of which the frame may be attached to the under side of the plow-beam a, as shown in Fig.1, with one side of the frame in advance of the standard or foot I) of the plow and the other side of the frame in rear thereof. The clip-bolt 6, which connects the rear side of the frame to the under side of the plow-beam, also passes through openings in the rear portion of the brace-rod c of the foot or standard 19 to strengthen the connection between the standard or foot and the plow-beam, or the said standard or foot I) may be entirely removed in the event that the plow is to be used as a double-shovel plow.
The opposite sides or ends of the frame 1 are adapted to carry standards or feet 7 8 of suitable construction for the attachment of points. or shovels thereto, and when the said standards 7 8 are used in connection with the standard I), as shown in Fig. 1', the plow is converted into a triple-shovel plow.
The standards 7 8 are respectively adjustable longitudinally on the ends of the framesections which carry them. As shown in the drawings, the section 2 of the frame is provided near its front and rear ends in its upper edge with adjusting notches 9. The standard 7 isdisposed astride of the longitudinally-disposedportion of the section 2 and has a bolt 10, which by engagement appropriately with one of the notches 9 enables the standard to be disposed at any desired adjustment. Said standard is further connected to the section 2 by a brace-rod 11, the front end of which is attached to said section 2, as at 12, and the rear end of which is attached to said standard, as at 13.
The standard 8, which is disposed astride of the longitudipally-disposed portion of the section 3, is pivotally bolted thereto, as at 14, andthe forwardly-curved upper portion 15 of said standard has a bolt 16, which connects its forked front ends together. A longitudin'ally-adj ustable key l7,which is wedgeshaped, has a depending eye 18 at its front end, that engages the section, 3 and enables said key to be moved longitudinally thereon,
, and said key has notches 19 in its upper side,
adapted to be engaged by the bolt 16 of the standard 8, so that the latter will be disposed at any desired angle.
My improved attachment is exceedingly simple in construction, is light, strong, and durable, is very useful in conn'ectionwith an ordinary single-shovel plowto convert the latter into a double or triple shovel plow at will, and may be manufactured at slight cost. It will be understood that by reason of the slidable relation between the respective arms of the sections of frame 1 the latter may be extended or shortened laterally with respect 10 the plow, so that the points or shovels carried thereby may be disposed for operation at any desired distance apart.
It will be understood that my invention provides a cultivator which can be used as a single, double, or triple foot plow.
I do not desire to limit myself to the precise construction and combination of devices hereinbefore described, as it is evident that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. Aplow attachment of the class described, comprising a standard-carrying frame having a pair of U-shaped sections with the arms thereof overlapping each other, slidably related and provided with mutually-engaging connecting and guide devices, whereby said sections are permanently connected together and said frame is adapted to be lengthened and shortened, substantially as described.
2. A plow attachment of the class described,
comprising a standard-carrying frame having a pair of U-shaped sections with the arms thereof overlapping each other, slidably re lated, and provided with mutually-engaging lugs bent respectively on the lower and upper edges of the front and rear arms of said sections, substantially as described.
3. Aplow attachment of the class described comprising a standard-carrying frame having a pair of U-shaped sections with the arms thereof overlapping each other, slidably related, and provided with mutually-engaging connecting devices, in combination with clipbolts to engage said overlapping arms and clamp said frame to the under side of a plowbeam, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT W. I'IAULBROOK.
