' be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the laccompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention pertains to snapping-rolls for Shredders and seeks to ob'viatecertain objectionable features which now exist in devices of thatclass. Such rolls are now constructed'in various Ways, somerof them being formed with smooth faces, some being provided with points to catch the stalks and assist them in their progress through the rolls, and still others being furnished with longitudinal corrugations. In all of these devices the operation is not satisfactory, for the reason that frequently when an ear of corn is broken from a stalk by action of the rolls a part of the husk is drawn between such rolls, which continue to revolve without detaching such husk from the ear. This results in the ear being held pendent against the face of the snappingrolls instead of dropping upon the picker-rolls, as it should. The ear thus interferes with the feeding of the material into the rolls, and in most cases the operator seeks to remove the ear with his hand. In this way many hands and arms have been drawn into the rolls, resulting in the loss thereof to the operator and in some instances in the loss of the operators life. The roll 1 is provided at each end with a circular head 5, adapted to engage similar heads 6 on the ends of the roll 2, whereby such rolls are prevented from coming in contact ,with one another.
Seated on the shaft 3 is the gear-wheel 7,
which engages a similar gear-Wheel S on the shaft 4, whereby motion is imparted to such shaft 4 and the roll'2. Power may be appliedto the shaft 3 by any known method.
' The rolls land 2 have longitudinal corrugations or grooves v9, the corrugations of one roll meshing with those of the other, as shown inrFigfS. Eachroll is Yalso provided with a thereof and intersecting the longitudinal grooves 9 a number of times. This results in the formation of numerous teeth or elevations 11, such teeth being in rows lengthwise of the rolls and being also arranged spirally thereon in the form of spiral ribs located intermediate the several convolutions of the spiral grooves 10. It will be seen that the spirals run in the same direction on each roll; but as these rolls revolve in different directions, as indicated by the arrows, the spiral groove in the roll l, as Well as the spiral row of teeth llthereon, have a constant apparent movement toward the left when the rolls are in motion. The spiral groove and spiral row of teeth on the roll 2, on the contrary, have a constant movement (apparently) to the right when such rolls are in motion.
.At certain points in the revolution of the rolls the teeth 11 of one roll will mesh with those of the other, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
As the next succeeding longitudinal rows of IOO held therein by the butt-end thereof, a partial revolution of the rolls would cause such butt-end to be crushed to pieces and carried through the same. In the same way if an ear of corn were caught and held by its husk or a part thereof the constant crushing and cross action of the teeth would immediately effec-t its release.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A pair of snapping-rolls, having longitudinal corrngations, the corrugations of one roll being adapted to mesh with those of the other roll; said rolls being further provided with spiral grooves, Which, in operation, appear to travel from end to end of such rolls; the arrangement of such spirals being such that the groove on one roll moves in a direction opposite to that of the groove on the other roll; and means for operating said rolls; substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the roll 1, provided With the heads 5, and having longitudinal grooves 9, and a spiral groove 10; the roll 2, provided with a head 6, and having similar longitudinal grooves 9, and a spiral groove l0; means of support for such rolls; and means of operation thereof; substantially as described.
3. In a device of the character described, a pair of rolls each being provided with longitudinal grooves and spiral grooves forming spiral series of teeth, the teeth of each roll meshing with the teeth of the other roll and the direction of the spiral arrangement of teeth being the same on both rolls, and means for rotating the rolls in opposite directions.
