Be it known that I, FREDERICK R. PAYNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Powers, in the countyof Menominee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Bag-Holding Device, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to bag-holding devices.

The Object of theinvention is to provide an apparatus which is simple in construction and efficient in operation for holding open the mouth of a grain o r other bag, while such bag is beingfilled.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the nature referred to wherein the mouth of the bag is efficiently held and clamped in suitable relation to be filled.

The invention consists,substantially,in the constructionfcombination, location, and arrangementof parts, all as will be more fully hereinafter setforth, as shown in the accompanying drawings, and finally pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings and to thevarious views and reference-signs appearing thereon, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of aibag-holding device embodying the principlesof myinvention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a broken detail view in section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2 looking'in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 4 is a detached detail viewin perspective of a clamp for engaging and holding the edge of the mouth of the bag. In the operation of filling bags with grainsuch as corn, whcat, oats, and the like-or potatoes, cofiee, sugar, or'other articles, it has commonlyrequired the services of two persons, one to hold the mouthof the bag open and the'other to shovel the grain or the like into the open mouth of the bag, or, where the services of two persons are not available,great inconvenience is experienced by a single person attempting to hold the bag open with one hand and shovel the grain or other article into the bag with the other hand. It is the special purpose of my invention to avoid this objection and to provide a construction wherein the bag is efficiently held and supported in open position ready to receive the grain or other article to be delivered therein,-whereby one person without inconveniencemay expeditiously accomplish the work of filling bags with grain or other material, thereby not only avoiding the necessity for the services of two persons, but also avoiding the inconvenience of attempting to hold the bag open with one hand while it is being filled with the other.

In carrying out 'my invention I provide a standard A, which, if desired, may be supported upon, formed with, or carried by a platform B of suitable size,adapting it to form a base or support for the bag, (indicated at 0.) Upon the upper end of standard A, I provide ratchet-teeth D upon one ofthe faces thereof, preferably the front face.

E designates a bracket having an opening in the shank thereof adapted to receive therethrough the upper end of the standard A. The opening through said bracket is designated by reference-sign F and should be of such dimensions that it will fit loosely over the upper end of standard A when the flange of said bracket is in horizontal position; but when slightly tilted, as shownin Fig. 1,the bracket E will bind upon standard 'A, and hence be held in fixed position thereon. The ratchet-teeth D serve to afiord means for adjusting the height of bracket E with reference to standard A. Thus by slightly tilting the bracket from the position thereof shown in'Fig'.'1 said bracket may be raised or lowered upon standard A until the desired height of adjustment is attained, at which point said bracket will be held by the binding effect thereof upon the standard, aided by one of the ratchet-teeth B, forming ashoulder therefor. Formed on or carried by bracket E is a semicircular frame G. If -desired,this frame and the bracket E may be cast integrally with each other, as shown, though this is'immaterial so far as the scope of my invention is concerned, and I do not desire'to be limited or restricted thereto. Suitably supported upon the inner surface of semicircular frame G is a plate H to serve as a deflector in directing the material with which the bag is to be filled efficiently into the mouth of the bag. At the ends of the frame G are suitably pivoted clamp-arms J. These clamp-arms are in the form of double cranks, being pivoted upon the pintles K, suitably mounted or journaled in frame G and provided with handles L, by which they may be rocked about their pivotpintles K. The clamp-arms J are provided with tongues orprojections M, arranged when said arms are rocked to project or extendinto seats or depressions N, formed in the upper surface of the frame G, at the ends thereof, as clearly shown. If desired, the frame G may be provided with one or more pins 0 in the upper surface thereof. (See Fig. 1.)

The operation of the device is as follows: The height of bracket E and frame G is suitably adjusted with reference to standard A in the manner above described and to correspond with the length of the bag to be filled. The upper edge of the bag is then folded around or telescoped over frame G and over the securing or holding pins or projections O, the edge of the bag being folded over the upper surface of frame G and between the locking projections M of arms J and the seats or depressions N in the upper surface of frame G at the ends thereof. The clamp-arms J are then rocked about their pivots or pintles K in order to cause the lugs or projections of said arms to force the edge of the bag down into the seats or depressions N, thereby efficiently clamping and holding the bag distended and open, the bag resting upon the platform or base support B. Of course it will be understood that the bracket E and frame G are not required to support any great weight, but merely to hold the bag distended and its mouth open. While in this position, the bag is filled, the shield or plate H serving to direct the material into the open mouth of the bag. It is sometimes the custom to provide the edge of the mouth of the bag with a selvage or hem. In order to accommodate the fold or extra thickness of the hem or selvage, I may provide a seat or groove P in frame G, opposite and adjacent to the seat or depression N therein, into which the hem or seam of the bag-mouth may be received. After the bag has been filled it is readily detached from the holding device by rocking clamp-arms J, so as to carry the lugs or projections M thereof clear of the seats or depressions N, and then by hand removing the end of the bag from the frame G and from off the holding pin or pins 0.

Thus it will be seen that I provide an exceedingly simple and efficient bag-holding device which is inexpensive in manufacture and by the use of which one person can perform in a more expeditious and satisfactory manner the work of filling bags, which heretofore has required the services of two persons. It will also be seen that the device is readily adjustable to conform to varying lengths of bags. It will also be seen that the greater the weight imposed upon the frame G the more efficient will be the clamping effect of bracket E upon the supporting-standard A, inasmuch as the weight imposed upon the frame G by the bag serves to tilt the bracket E, thereby insuring an eificient support of the bracket in its adjusted position upon the standard.

Many variations and changes in the details of construction and arrangement would readily occur to persons skilled in the art and still fall within the spirit and scope of my invention. I do not desire, therefore, to be limited or restricted to the exact details shown and above set forth; but,

Having now stated the object and nature of my invention and a construction embodying the principles thereof, what I claim as new and useful and of my own invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A bag-holding device comprisinga standard, a semicircular frame mounted thereon and provided with seats or depressions in the upper surface thereof, the edge of the open mouth of a bag adapted to be telescoped over and around said frame and over the seats or depressions therein, and means arranged to be projected into said seats or depressions to crowd the edge of the bag into said seats or depressions and clamp the same to said frame, as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a bag-holding device, a standard, a frame supported thereon and having a pin or projection and locking seats or depressions in the upper surface thereof, the open mouth of a bag adapted to be telescoped overand around said frame to be engaged by said pin or projection, clamps arranged to project into said seats or depressions to force or crowd the edges of the bag into the same, and a deflectorplate arranged to direct the material into the open mouth of the bag, as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a bag-holding device, the combination with a standard, of an open-sided frame supportedthereon and provided with seats or depressions adjacent to the ends thereof, the open mouth of the bag adapted to be telescoped over and upon said frame, and clamparms journaled in said frame and provided with tongues or projections arranged to be projected into said seats or depressions to force the edge of the bag into said seats or depressions, as and for the purpose set forth.
