Be it known that I, SAMUEL R. BAILEY, a citizen of theUnited States, and a resident of Amesbury, in the county of Essex andA State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaft-Shackles for Vehicles, of which the following is a speciiication. A
This invention relates to improvements in shaft-shackles for vehicles, and has for its ob- `ject a devioe'of improved and simplified construction capable of being readily applied to and detached from the clip.
My invention consists in the features and in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and definitely pointed out in the claims following thedescription, reference being` had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part ofthe specification wherein;- l
Figure l is a front elevation of'my improved shaft-shackle, showing the same applied to a thill-coupling of a vehicle-axle. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2 2 shown in Fig. l. Fig. 3 isra detail front elevation of the inner` end of the shaft-iron.
Fig. 4 is a cross-section on 'the line 4 4 shownv in Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a detail rear view of the adjustable jaw, shown as removed from the shaft-iron.

Referring to the drawings, indicates one end of a carriage thill or shaft secured in a suitable :manner to the shaft-iron B.
The shaft-iron B is provided at its rear or inner end with a preferably semicircnlar jaw ZJ, which in connection with 'an adjustable pivoted preferably semicircular jaw C is adapted to encompass the thill-coupling bolt D or an elastic sleeve d, located thereon, as shown.
The bolt D is pivotally connected to the ears E E of the clip E', which is secured to the carriage-axle F by means of the plate G and nuts e e, as is common in devices of this kind.
The rear inner face of the thill-iron B is provided with a cylindrical recess b', and from the central bottom portion of Such recess projects an externally-threadedstud or l screw b", which may be formed,l preferably, integral with the thill-iron B, as shown, or may be attached .thereto in any desired or suitable manner.
The adjustable jaw C is provided at its inner end with a sleeve C', which is guided and `longitudinally adjustable in the cylindricalrecess b in the shaft-iron B, as shown.

Having thus fully described the natnre,con struction, andr operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim- `l. In a shaft-shackle, the combination with 4the thill-iron terminatingl at its extremity in a jaw b, and provided on its inner face with a threaded stud b, of the interiorly-threaded sleeve I-I, engaging said stud and provided with an adjuster, and the jaw C, journaled on said sleeve and provided with an extremity adapted to encompass the bolt D, or its elastic cushion d, as set forth.
