  • the word grain means the stalk, head, and kernel as growingin the field and includes all cereals, as wheat, corn, rye, oats, barley, &c., or crops of all kinds to be harvested.
  • the word harvester here means an implement, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, which may have a reeling apparatus A in front of the cutters A, the cutters extending across the swath part of the machine and capable of cutting the crops, a divider A to separate the crops at the outer end of the machine, a horizontal con veyerA ,eXtendin g across the swath part of the mechanism.
  • the elevator A is like usually composed of two endless belts A and A, Fig.
  • the grain-binder is a binding mechanism separate from the grain-harvester and is composed of several working parts in a frame, one portion being below the binder -deck and another above, having a band-placing arm, knot-tying and grain-ejecting mechanism to eject the gavels after being bound.
  • This grain-binding apparatus is movable longitudinally with the grain while the machine is in motion to bind the grain centrally, and it is attachable and detachable from the harvester part of the machine and separable therefrom.
  • butts in this case means the butts of the straw of the grain, being that portion cut from the part left standing in the field.
  • the butt-adjuster is composed principally of three coacting members-Viz., averticallyreciprocating arm member having teeth longitudinallyand crosswise disposed operating over and above the binder-deck and over the path of-the grain in one direction and upon 1 and into the grain in another direction, a pivotal wing-board member located at the extreme butts of the grain to guide and control the butts of the grain when being operated upon by the vertically-reciprocating toothedarm member, a pivotally-connected grain-depressor located on the opposite side from the wing-board member of the vertically-reciprocating toothed arm member to hold the grain down while being acted upon by the verticallyreciprocating toothed arm member.
  • the adj usting-lever is an adjunct to the butt-adjuster.
  • Said arm is held down in this position by a pivotally-connecting link at its rear end to the wing-board, its front end pivotally connected to a vertically rotary crank to hold the arm down and reciprocate it, thus forcibly and positively from the elevator to the binder and placed opposite the wing-board, the vertically-reciprocatingtoothedarmintermediatebetween the depressor and the wing-board.
  • This construction has been found extremely useful, overcoming all the difficulties found in the old methods.
  • a single-piece metallic box B which supports the elevator-rolls B B B and driving-gears B B Upon this plate is formed a bearing B which receives the driving-shaft B which is provided at its lower end with a gear B and at its upper end with a gear B
  • a gear B which engages with and communicates motion to the gear 13"
  • said stripping-roller driven at its rearward end by the gear B secured thereon
  • this construction is to bring the several working parts into a much smaller space than could be done were the crank-shaft to have an independent bearing from the hub of the wheel. It is desirable that the vertically-reciprocating toothed arm member C of the butt-adjuster be operated near to the wing-board member of the butt-adjuster and that the driving-gear for said vertically-reciprocating toothed arm member 0 and parts he kept near the wing-board member of the butt-adjuster. Therefore it is desirable that the construction of the crank-shaft O and the hub of its driving gear-wheel B be so formed that while affording the necessary journal length it will be very compact. Consequently this construction of the journal for the crankshaft C is desirable to be the hub of the driving gear-wheel B, being fastened upon the crank-shaft C or to it, it thereby gives motion to said crank and but a small space is occupied by the several parts.
  • crank-pin C of the crankC is adapted to fit into and rotate the front tooth G which is secured to the vertically reciprocating toothed arm member 0 of the butt-adjuster and is provided with a series of teeth which are serrated or saw-tooth shaped.
  • a flexible arm D To the rear tooth 0 Figs. 8, 9, 12, and 13, is pivoted a flexible arm D and is provided with a pocket D, which supports a spring D The lower end of the spring D is held in the pocket D by the stud or boss D on.
  • the rear tooth C The tooth G and flexible arm D are pivotally secured by a pin D passing through the upper part of the tooth (l and the hub D, of the arm D.
  • the object of providing a flexible arm for the vertically-reciprocating toothed arm member C of the butt-adjuster is should any large bunches of grain come under same it would yield upwardly andimmediately return to its normal position after the removal of the grain.
  • FIG 5 and 6 show the de' pressor F attached to the deck-cover F,which has a portion of its length cut away to leave an opening for the vertically-reciprocating arm member (3 of the butt-adjuster, having teeth to operate in its lower arm F extending downwardly to near the binding mechanism, and as the vertically-reciprocating arm member 0 of the butt-adj uster, having teeth, is shown in its four extreme positions it is evident that the butts of the grain are penetrated by the teeth of arm and compressed toward the deck and forcibly drawn under the depressor-arm F and held there while being conveyed to the binding mechanism.
  • the depressor F is pivotally connected to the elevator portion of the machine by the eyeplate F whichis provided with an oblong slot F and also with a slot on the side to receive the depressor member F of the buttadjuster.
  • the depressor member F of the butt-adjuster swings in unison with the wing-board member E" of the butt-adjuster and the vertically-reciprocating arm member (3 of the butt-adjuster, having teeth, throughout the various horizontal adjustments of all of said butt-adjuster parts while at work.
  • the outer end of the depressor F is flexibly connected to the operators adjusting-lever F by a clip F, which is rigidly secured to the operators lever F and provided with an eye 7 through which the rod F is permitted to move freely longitudinally.
  • Fig. 21 Bis the single-piece metallic box, which pivotally supports the wing-board member E of the butt-adjuster and the driving mechanism for the vertically-reciprocating toothed arm member C.
  • the pivotal frame 0 is provided at its lower part with a box G and cap'G, Fig. 22.
  • the upper part is provided with lugs Gr G adapted to receive the yoke G
  • This yoke Gr (shown in detail in Fig. 24) is made to fit over the projecting boss G formed on the upper part of the bearing B of the single-piece metallic box B.
  • the single-piece metallic box B being in position, the hub of the bevel gear-wheel B is placed in the hub C of the pivotal frame'C, the crank inserted and secured.
  • the yoke Gr is placed on the projecting boss G of the bearing B.
  • the driving-shaft B with gear 13 secured in position, is placed in the bearing B and the pinion B secured in place at the top.
  • In the single-piece metallic box B is cast an opening G and abearing G adapted to 'receive the box G of the pivotal frame 0, which is provided with a cap G.
  • the above-named parts being in position on the single-piece metallic box 13 and the pivotal frame 0, with its bevel gear-wheel B and crank C secured together, the box G is placed in the opening G and around the bearing G and the cap G placed in position and secured.
  • the yoke G is then bolted or rigidly attached to the pivotal frame 0, which completes the pivotal construction of the driving mechanism for the vertically-reciprocating toothed arm member 0 of the butt-adjuster.
  • the shaft B being driven from the stripper-roll and having its axis at a right angle to the crank O on the crank-shaft 0 their center lines intersecting and constructed as above stated, it will be evident that the pivotal frame 0', supporting the wing-board member E of the butt adjuster, the vertically reciprocating arm member C", having teeth, and its driving mechanism, may be adjusted horizontally to the position required to bind long or short grain andthe driving-gears be held in mesh while operating in any of its several positions.
  • the term horizontally adjusting the buttadjuster means to swing it back and forth to and from the band-line of the binder in order that the short or long grain may be brought in proper binding position centrally to the band and by this means not require the too frequent adjustment of the grainbinder itself, as would otherwise be necessary in order that the binding might be central to the straw, and as the grain grows very uneven in height from the ground it becomes necessary to make frequent adjustment, and as this butt-adjuster is light and small and very easily moved horizontally it is usually more practical to deliver the grain centrally for binding by this than moving the binder, it being the heavier.
  • Fig. 2 shows the vertically-reciprocating toothed arm member O of the butt-adjuster in its normal position in line with the elevator A for binding long grain, and by means of the operators adjusting-lever F the wing-board member E the depressor member F, and vertically-reciprocating toothed arm member 0 of the buttadjuster, with its connections to the wingboard, are adjusted horizontally on the deck.
  • Fig. 3 shows the .verticallyreciprocating toothed arm member C of the butt-adjuster in position to bind short grain, andin Fig. 4 the binderand deck are moved forward, showing the vertically-reciprocating toothed arm member C of the butt-adjuster in place for binding very short grain.
  • Figs. 26, 27, 28 show modified sections of the wing-board member E of the butt-adjuster, taken on the line w a; in' Fig. 30.
  • wing-board member of the butt-adjuster may be made L-shaped, as in Fig. 26, in which E is the wing-board and H the strip or straight, as shown in Fig. 27, in which E is the wingboard and H the strip; but I prefer to make itas shown in Fig. 28, in which E is the Wing-board and H the strip, so that the lower edge may be made to scrape the deck when being adjustedfor short grain, the strip H being the same construction in the several modifications of the wing-board.
  • This vertically-reciprocating arm member 0 of the butt-adjuster having teeth longitudinally and crosswise disposed,in its operation reaches out and over the grain at the delivery end of the elevator, and as the arm is on the downward path reaching over the grain and into the delivery end of the elevator, piercing the straw at several points about the butt-end of the grain, compressing and forcibly moving the grain from the elevator to the binder.
  • This is very important, as the butts are retarded in passing the cutting apparatus by the action of the horizontal grain-conveyer and the uncut grain acting to retard the butts. Therefore the grain reaches the binder-deck obliquely, heads downward in advance of the butts.
  • FIG. 1 shows a diagram of the path of each tooth and clearly shows how that when the vertically-reciprocating arm member C having teeth, has reached the point 3 it has reached over and into the delivery end of the elevator, penetrated the butts of the grain, and forcibly compressed them to the deck and under the depressor F and strip H and conveys them some distance down the deck before returning to repeat the operation.
  • the vertically-reciprocating arm memher of the butt-adjuster having teeth travels fast enough to bring the butts and headsin line before reaching the binding mechanism.
  • Fig. 29 is shown the vertically-recipro eating arm member of the butt-adjuster C having teeth at an angle to the wing-board member E of the butt-adjuster. This is done so that in case the butts of the grain coming from the elevator are-bent the operation of the vertically-reciprocating arm member of the butt-adjuster 0, having teeth, will

  • the front tooth C is made wider than teeth 0 C and C to act over a greater area of grain in front near the elevator lhanin the rear opposite the band-needle for the purpose of moving the grain vigorously near the elevator to clear it, and as the teeth G, G and C are each narrower than the other act over less area of grain and at the end of their movement lift upwardly out of same to avoid clogging the needle with the grain.

GRAIN-BINDING HARVESTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent N 0. 703,328, dated June 24, 1902. Application filed Dotober 29,1900. Qerial No. 34,682. (No model.)
To all whom it 7111a concern.-
Be it kn own that I, WILLIAM N. WHlTELY, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Grain-Binding Harvesters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in grain-binding harvesting-machines,and especially to butt-adjusting and grain handling and controlling mechanism; and the objects of my improvements are, first, to provide a butt-adjuster and the accessories thereto that is, to give motion tothis mechanismto hold and control the grain in various directions; second, to provide a fork located at the inner end of the cutting apparatus and near the mouth of the elevator to reach out and draw the grain to the cutting apparatus and force the cut grain back to the mouth of the elevator.
The third object of my invention is to pro vide a grain-lifting mechanism placed at the rear end of the elevator to assist in elevating long grain and a similar mechanism at the rear of the grain-binder deck to lift and draw the grain over and down the deck to the binding mechanism. V
I attain these objects by means of the m echanism shown in the accompanying drawings, in which V Figure 1 is a front elevation of a harvester and binder. Fig. 2 is a plan view of same.

Similar letters of reference indicate parts in the diflierent views.
To abbreviate the wording of the specification and claims and that the terms used shall always have the same definite and understood meaning, I append the following explanations.
The word grain means the stalk, head, and kernel as growingin the field and includes all cereals, as wheat, corn, rye, oats, barley, &c., or crops of all kinds to be harvested.
The word harvester here means an implement, as shown in Figs. The elevator A is like usually composed of two endless belts A and A, Fig. 5, and is placed obliquely, with its mouth A at the inner end of the horizontal conveyer A and its delivery end A extending to the grain-receptacle A, which is between the elevator A and the binding mechanism A This receptacle I term the binderdeck, and it is usually higher at its receiving side than the binder.
What I term the grain-binder is a binding mechanism separate from the grain-harvester and is composed of several working parts in a frame, one portion being below the binder -deck and another above, having a band-placing arm, knot-tying and grain-ejecting mechanism to eject the gavels after being bound. This grain-binding apparatusis movable longitudinally with the grain while the machine is in motion to bind the grain centrally, and it is attachable and detachable from the harvester part of the machine and separable therefrom.
The word butts in this case means the butts of the straw of the grain, being that portion cut from the part left standing in the field.
The butt-adjuster is composed principally of three coacting members-Viz., averticallyreciprocating arm member having teeth longitudinallyand crosswise disposed operating over and above the binder-deck and over the path of-the grain in one direction and upon 1 and into the grain in another direction, a pivotal wing-board member located at the extreme butts of the grain to guide and control the butts of the grain when being operated upon by the vertically-reciprocating toothedarm member, a pivotally-connected grain-depressor located on the opposite side from the wing-board member of the vertically-reciprocating toothed arm member to hold the grain down while being acted upon by the verticallyreciprocating toothed arm member. The adj usting-lever is an adjunct to the butt-adjuster.
Heretofore butt-adjuster mechanisms did not positively move the grain. The parts intended to move it acted only upon'it in a loose state, rubbing along it, sometimes with effect, often not. Consequently the work was imperfect, the binder-deck filled up with grain, and the machine clogged, requiring stoppages to clean it out by the operator. This was very objectionable, and the object of my improvements is to remedy these defects by the positive forcible moving of the butt-ends of the grain to the binder mechanism from the elevator. This I do by my improved butt-adjuster, one member, a long wide vertically-reciprocating arm, having a series of teeth on its under side, which extends over a considerable portion of the grain lengthwise and crosswise at the same time and penetrates entirely through the grain from the top, thereby positively controlling the movement of the grain in whatever direction the arm is caused to move, the arm resting upon the grain and compressing it onto the binder-deck. Said arm is held down in this position by a pivotally-connecting link at its rear end to the wing-board, its front end pivotally connected to a vertically rotary crank to hold the arm down and reciprocate it, thus forcibly and positively from the elevator to the binder and placed opposite the wing-board, the vertically-reciprocatingtoothedarmintermediatebetween the depressor and the wing-board. This construction has been found extremely useful, overcoming all the difficulties found in the old methods.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 21, 29, and 41, to the upper end of the elevatoris attached a single-piece metallic box B, which supports the elevator-rolls B B B and driving-gears B B Upon this plate is formed a bearing B which receives the driving-shaft B which is provided at its lower end with a gear B and at its upper end with a gear B To the front end of the stripping-roller B is secured a gear B which engages with and communicates motion to the gear 13", secured to the lower end of the shaft B said stripping-roller driven at its rearward end by the gear B secured thereon, (sectional Fig. 7,) which engages with the intermediate gear 13, which is driven by the gear B on the end of the upper roller of the lower elevator, which receives its motion from the main driving mechanism. To the upper end of the shaft B is secured the bevel-pinion B, which drives the bevel gear-wheel B, which is provided with a long hub, as shown in Fig. 45, which passes through the hub C of the pivotal frame 0 and forms a long bearing for the gear B. The crank-shaft C is fitted within the hub of the driving-gear B, said entire crank-shaft being embraced by the hub of the drivinggear B and the hub of said gear-wheel in turn is journaled at O. The purpose of this construction is to bring the several working parts into a much smaller space than could be done were the crank-shaft to have an independent bearing from the hub of the wheel.
The crank-pin C of the crankC is adapted to fit into and rotate the front tooth G which is secured to the vertically reciprocating toothed arm member 0 of the butt-adjuster and is provided with a series of teeth which are serrated or saw-tooth shaped. To the rear tooth 0 Figs. 8, 9, 12, and 13, is pivoted a flexible arm D and is provided with a pocket D, which supports a spring D The lower end of the spring D is held in the pocket D by the stud or boss D on. the rear tooth C The tooth G and flexible arm D are pivotally secured by a pin D passing through the upper part of the tooth (l and the hub D, of the arm D. The object of providing a flexible arm for the vertically-reciprocating toothed arm member C of the butt-adjuster is should any large bunches of grain come under same it would yield upwardly andimmediately return to its normal position after the removal of the grain.
To the upper end of the flexible arm D is pivoted the vibrating link E, Figs. 8 and 10, and at the lower end link E is pivoted to the combined link and adjusting-lever support E, which is rigidly secured to the side of the wing-board E (See Fig. 6.)
Working in conjunction with the graincompressing action of the vertically-reciproeating arm member (3 of the butt-adjuster, which is channel-shaped, with teeth on its under side, both longitudinally and crosswise disposed, which pierce orenter the grain at several points from the top in its downward movement and compress the grain to the deck, is the depressor F. (Shown in Figs. 5, 6, 17, and 18.) Figs. 5 and 6 show the de' pressor F attached to the deck-cover F,which has a portion of its length cut away to leave an opening for the vertically-reciprocating arm member (3 of the butt-adjuster, having teeth to operate in its lower arm F extending downwardly to near the binding mechanism, and as the vertically-reciprocating arm member 0 of the butt-adj uster, having teeth, is shown in its four extreme positions it is evident that the butts of the grain are penetrated by the teeth of arm and compressed toward the deck and forcibly drawn under the depressor-arm F and held there while being conveyed to the binding mechanism. The depressor F is pivotally connected to the elevator portion of the machine by the eyeplate F whichis provided with an oblong slot F and also with a slot on the side to receive the depressor member F of the buttadjuster. By said pivotal connection the depressor member F of the butt-adjuster swings in unison with the wing-board member E" of the butt-adjuster and the vertically-reciprocating arm member (3 of the butt-adjuster, having teeth, throughout the various horizontal adjustments of all of said butt-adjuster parts while at work.
The outer end of the depressor F is flexibly connected to the operators adjusting-lever F by a clip F, which is rigidly secured to the operators lever F and provided with an eye 7 through which the rod F is permitted to move freely longitudinally.
The operators adjusting-lever F tshown.
in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6) is curved downwardly, the lower end F being pivotally concover F, terminating in a handle in easy reach 7 of the operator.
In Fig. 21, Bis the single-piece metallic box, which pivotally supports the wing-board member E of the butt-adjuster and the driving mechanism for the vertically-reciprocating toothed arm member C. The pivotal frame 0 is provided at its lower part with a box G and cap'G, Fig. 22. The upper part is provided with lugs Gr G adapted to receive the yoke G This yoke Gr (shown in detail in Fig. 24) is made to fit over the projecting boss G formed on the upper part of the bearing B of the single-piece metallic box B. The single-piece metallic box B being in position, the hub of the bevel gear-wheel B is placed in the hub C of the pivotal frame'C, the crank inserted and secured. The yoke Gr" is placed on the projecting boss G of the bearing B. The driving-shaft B", with gear 13 secured in position, is placed in the bearing B and the pinion B secured in place at the top. In the single-piece metallic box B is cast an opening G and abearing G adapted to 'receive the box G of the pivotal frame 0, which is provided with a cap G. The above-named parts being in position on the single-piece metallic box 13 and the pivotal frame 0, with its bevel gear-wheel B and crank C secured together, the box G is placed in the opening G and around the bearing G and the cap G placed in position and secured. The yoke G is then bolted or rigidly attached to the pivotal frame 0, which completes the pivotal construction of the driving mechanism for the vertically-reciprocating toothed arm member 0 of the butt-adjuster. The shaft B being driven from the stripper-roll and having its axis at a right angle to the crank O on the crank-shaft 0 their center lines intersecting and constructed as above stated, it will be evident that the pivotal frame 0', supporting the wing-board member E of the butt adjuster, the vertically reciprocating arm member C", having teeth, and its driving mechanism, may be adjusted horizontally to the position required to bind long or short grain andthe driving-gears be held in mesh while operating in any of its several positions.
The term horizontally adjusting the buttadjuster means to swing it back and forth to and from the band-line of the binder in order that the short or long grain may be brought in proper binding position centrally to the band and by this means not require the too frequent adjustment of the grainbinder itself, as would otherwise be necessary in order that the binding might be central to the straw, and as the grain grows very uneven in height from the ground it becomes necessary to make frequent adjustment, and as this butt-adjuster is light and small and very easily moved horizontally it is usually more practical to deliver the grain centrally for binding by this than moving the binder, it being the heavier.
Referring to Figs. 2, 3, 4, Fig. Fig. 3 shows the .verticallyreciprocating toothed arm member C of the butt-adjuster in position to bind short grain, andin Fig. 4 the binderand deck are moved forward, showing the vertically-reciprocating toothed arm member C of the butt-adjuster in place for binding very short grain.
Figs. 26, 27, 28 show modified sections of the wing-board member E of the butt-adjuster, taken on the line w a; in' Fig. 30. The
wing-board member of the butt-adjuster may be made L-shaped, as in Fig. This vertically-reciprocating arm member 0 of the butt-adjuster, having teeth longitudinally and crosswise disposed,in its operation reaches out and over the grain at the delivery end of the elevator, and as the arm is on the downward path reaching over the grain and into the delivery end of the elevator, piercing the straw at several points about the butt-end of the grain, compressing and forcibly moving the grain from the elevator to the binder. This is very important, as the butts are retarded in passing the cutting apparatus by the action of the horizontal grain-conveyer and the uncut grain acting to retard the butts. Therefore the grain reaches the binder-deck obliquely, heads downward in advance of the butts. Consequently it is necessary to confine the grain on the binder-deck and move the butts faster than the heads are then moving to bind the gavel centrally and have the straws straight. This is one object of my invention,'and it must have a positive motion and operate upon the butts of the grain automatically and forcibly. Another object is to positively and forcibly move the grain from. the elevator to the binding mechanism under all conditions.
compressed grain, the vertically-reciprocating toothed arm member C, rotatingin the direction of the arrow, being over and above the grain at the point marked 1 and in its rotation descends to 2, its many teeth entering or piercing the grain at various points, compressing and forcing the butts down to the deck at the point 3. The butts of the grain will now be under the depressor F and strip H and are confined there during their downward movement to the binding mechanism. Fig. shows a diagram of the path of each tooth and clearly shows how that when the vertically-reciprocating arm member C having teeth, has reached the point 3 it has reached over and into the delivery end of the elevator, penetrated the butts of the grain, and forcibly compressed them to the deck and under the depressor F and strip H and conveys them some distance down the deck before returning to repeat the operation. The vertically-reciprocating arm memher of the butt-adjuster having teeth travels fast enough to bring the butts and headsin line before reaching the binding mechanism.
In Fig. 29 is shown the vertically-recipro eating arm member of the butt-adjuster C having teeth at an angle to the wing-board member E of the butt-adjuster. This is done so that in case the butts of the grain coming from the elevator are-bent the operation of the vertically-reciprocating arm member of the butt-adjuster 0, having teeth, will
be to draw them toward the rear of the binder far enough to be straightened before reaching the binding mechanism, the upward-extending portion D of the vertically-reciprocating toothed arm member of the butt-adjuster 0 extending outwardly and pivoted to the vibrating link E, the lower end of which is pivotally connected to the wing-board member E of the butt-adjuster outside of the grain. The front tooth C is made wider than teeth 0 C and C to act over a greater area of grain in front near the elevator lhanin the rear opposite the band-needle for the purpose of moving the grain vigorously near the elevator to clear it, and as the teeth G, G and C are each narrower than the other act over less area of grain and at the end of their movement lift upwardly out of same to avoid clogging the needle with the grain.

These several parts being in position, as shown in Fig. 31, the gear J is secured to the shaft J by a pin K, passing through the hub of the gear J and shaft J Fig. 33 shows the fork J in six positions of its movement and a diagram of the path of the tooth throughout its movement. Fig. 34 shows a front elevation of the supporting-frame J for the reelpost J, relief-fork J driving-gear J and shaft J It will be seen that the fork J reaches upward and outward into the grain and in its return movement bringing the grain in against the cutters and forcing the out grain backward within reach of the elevators.
