Description

@einen gisten @anni @fitta FRANKLIN H. BROWN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, EDWARD F. PEUGEOT, AND LEMUEL H. FLERSHEIM, OF SAME PLACE.
Lettere Patent No. 70,318, dated October 29, 18,67.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINE POR FINISHING BASKETS.
i TO WHOM THIS MAY CONCERN :y
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN H. BROWN, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented anew and useful Machine for Finishing Baskets or similar work; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description. thereof, reference being had to the accom and letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my invention.
Figure 2 is a partial end view of my invention.
Figure 3 is a view of the twisting-wheel or twister. i
My invention consists in an automatic machine, so arranged that when applied to the edges of baskets it will twist the uprights. as shownv in g. 1, thus making a border or nish-to the edges of thework.
panying drawings Construction and Operation.
A B B constitute the frame. C C is a' shaft, passed through` bearings Vin frame A. The shaft C is made hollow for the'purpose of feeding the filling Finto the centre of the finished work, which is essential only when it is desired to enlarge said border. N is'a universal joint, used for the purpose of enabling the twister E, which is rigidly attached to the lower end ofshaft C, toperform its work while passing around the curves of a basket. 'lhe twister E is provided with a. series of hooks, a, as shown in fig. 3, which, when in motion,
hook in and carry the uprigbts V around, causing them to be twisted into a border of uniform appearance. H
andI-I are friction-wheels, the side of the basket being clamped between them. The wheel H is attached to a swinging shaft, K, and is confined, when brought against the socket, in that position by means of a set-screw, m. Power is communicated to the wheel .H and-H. by means of the driving-wheel D, gearings g g', and shaft Gr, which causes the basket W to I no've as fast as 'required for 4the twister.' 7c is a. pivot, being the centre from whichshaft K is suspended. J J is a roofed apron, jointed at x to correspond with universal joint N, its object being to bend and retain the uprights V in properl position to be received by hooks a. One end of the apron J is bent, as shown in ig. `1, for the purpose of keeping the apron J' directly in under the shaft C.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is i 1. Wheel E, in combination with hooks a and shaft C, as shown, and. for the purposes set forth.
2. In a machine for finishing the edges of baskets, the universal jointNfin combination with twister`E and shaft C, as and forr the purposes set forth. i
3. Wheel H, in combination with adjustablewheel H and set-screw m, as and for the purposes set forth.
4. In a machine for finishing the edges of baskets, the .roofed apron J, as and for the purposes 'set forth.
5. The general construction and arrangement 'of mechanism, substantially as shown and for the purposes specied.
