Description

No. 703,004. Patented June 24, I902.
L. SCHMIDT.
FIELD TELEPHONE SET.
(Application filed Aug. 8, 1901.) (No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAMBERT SCHMIDT, OF \VEEHAWKEN, NEXV JERSEY.
FIELD-TELEPHONE SET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 703,004, dated June 24, 1902.
Application filed August 8, 1901. Serial No. 71,293. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAMBERT SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, whose residence and post-office address is \Veehawken, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Field-Telephone Sets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
In the use of the telephone in the field, as for military purposes, it is of course necessary to employ dry batteries, which are quickly exhausted if the circuit is closed for any length of time. It is therefore necessary to guard against accidental closing of the circuit during transportation of the instruments, while providing for their immediate use in case of necessity. It isalso desirable to provide for the packing of the instruments securely within the case, so that they shall not be damaged in transit. ()ftentimes the packing, with such materials as are at hand, consumes time which cannot well be spared, with the result that the instruments are damaged in transit. The object of this invention is to so arrange the instruments within the case therefor and to so construct the case that the act of closing the case shall of itself open or hold open the battery-circuit and at the same time secure the transmitter in place, so that it cannot itself be damaged during transportation nor cause damage to the other instruments of the set.
The invention will be more fully described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a field-telephone set constructed and arranged in accordance with the invention, the case being open. Fig. 2 is a view in vertical section on the plane indicated by the line 2 2 of'Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic view representing, for purposes of explanation, the usual electrical connections.
The set of instruments may comprise the usual magneto-box with its binding-posts a, hell I), hook-switch c, and transmitter d, the latter being mounted, if desired, upon a pivoted arm a, the electrical connections being effected in the usual manner. It may further comprise a battery-box f, containing the desired number of dry cells, and a receiver g, of usual form, being adapted to engage the hook-switch c, as usual, and by its weight when the case is in its normal vertical position to hold the hook-switch down, and thereby keep the battery-circuit open. The several instruments are inclosed within and supported by a case made of any suitable material, which is made in two partsa main part or box it and a cover 1', the latter being preferably hinged to the former at the bottom, as indicated at 7;. For convenience in use the box h and the cover '0' are preferably proportioned about as shown, the instruments thus being readily accessible, while the cover is not in the way when the case is open. At a suitable point in the box it is fixed a block or bar Z, which is notched, as indicated at m, to receive the stem of the receiver, such bar or plate being so placed as to engage the enlarged end of the receiver when the receiver is on the hook and the latter is down or open. A similar bar or block a is secured to the cover 7 to move therewith and to cooperate with the bar or block Z to lock the receiver in the position represented in the drawings, and thereby to lock the hook-switch c, which is then engaged by the receiver, down or open. The bar or block at is preferably formed with a notch (indicated at 0) to engage the receiver.
As will now be understood, when the telephone set has been in use and it is desired to remove the same to another location, the receiver is restored to the hook, the transmitter is turned down, as indicated in Fig. 2, and the cover tis closed and fastened by any suitable means, as by a hook, (indicated atp.) As the cover is closed the bar or block it engages the receiver and, in cooperation with the bar or block Z, holds the receiver securelyin position, thereby at the same time holding the hookswitch open. Should the set be in a horizontal or otherposition when the cover is closed, the bar or block n, engaging the conical head of the receiver, will pull the hook c to its open position. It will be evident that no packing of the instruments is required, that the only movable instrument-that is, the receiver will be securely held against movement in the case during transportation, and that the instruments are prepared for instant useby the act of opening the case.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination with a telephone set of a box to receive and support the same, a cover for said box, and means carried by said cover to engage and hold the receiver when the cover is closed, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with a telephone set comprising a magneto-box with movable hookswitch, a transmitter, and a receiver adapted to engage said hook-switch, of a box to receive and support said instruments a cover for said box, and a bar or block carried by said cover to engage and hold the receiver with the hook switch open when the cover is closed, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination with a telephone set comprising a magneto-box with movable hookswitch, a transmitter, and a receiver adapted to engage said hook-switch, of a box to receive and support said instruments, a bar or block fixed in said box to engage the receiver, a cover hinged to said box, and a bar or block carried by said cover to cooperate with the first-named bar or block and hold the receiver with the hook-switch open when the cover is closed, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination with a telephone set comprising a magneto-box, a receiver and a movable switch, of a box to receive and support the same, a cover for said box, and means carried by said cover to-hold the receiver andto hold said switch open, substantially as shown and described.
This specification signed and witnessed this 6th day of August, A. D. 1901.
