FREDERICK THOUROT, OF NEW. YORK Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM KAMMEYER, OFJERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
COOLING ATTACHM E NT FORlNflfEBNAL-COM BUSTION MOTORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 702,750, dated June 17, 1902.
Application filed January 29, 190 2. Serial No. 91 ,777. (No model.)
said attachment being adapted to be applied I to motors alreadyin use and also to-new motors.
The invention consists of a cooling attachment thatis adapt-edto be applied to internalexplosion motors, said attachment comprising 2c a hollow body having an enlarged upper end;
formed with a laterallyextending portion, said portion having a screened opening inthe underside thereof,a'conneoting-tube provided;
at the lower end, and an internal bafile-plate arranged opposite the inner end of said tube, as will be more fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of an internal-explosion mo- 0 tor with my attachment in position thereon. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the attachment drawn on a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on line 3 3, Fig.2; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same. 55 Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the crank-case of an internal-explosion motor of any approvedconstrnotion, such as 'usedfor automobiles, motor-cycles, and the like. The crank-case A is provided with an opening a at any suitable point where it is desired to ap ply the cooling attachment 0.. Thecooling attachment 0 consists of a hollow body D of 5 tapering shape in front elevation and 'ofrectangular transverse section and is provided:
with an enlarged upper end D, formed with a laterally-extending portion that is provided with a horizontally-disposed under surface d, which has a screened opening (1'. At the lower contracted end of the hollow body D is of the crank-case.
of the connecting-tube C, and being someprovided a rearwardly-extending connectingtube C, that is exteriorly threaded, so as to be secured in the screw-threaded opening a On the front face of the hollow body is'internally arranged the inclined baffle-plate e, strengthened by the web 6. The baffle-plate is disposed at the lower end of the hollow body opposite the inner end what inclined serves to arrest the discharge of oil through the attachment from the crankcase by the forceful passage of air therefrom.
The screen at the outgoing end of the attachment serves for preventing the ingress of dustand other impurities to theinterior of the motor, so that a smooth and easy working of the same is obtained, while by the baffle-plate at "the lower portion of the funnel-shaped body the oil is returned by the 7o suction action of the motor to the interior of the crank-case without being blown out through the attachment by the downstroke of the piston.
The attachment is applied in upright position on the crank-case of the motor whatever be the position'of the same, so asto produce its proper functioning. It enables the hot compressed air to pass out of the motor on the downstroke of the pistonand also serves to draw in the 0001 exterior air, so as to cool .the interior of the cylinder as well as the pis- 'vided with a screened opening, and a con- 5 necting-tube provided at the lower end of said hollowbody, substantially as set forth.
2. A cooling attachment for internal-explosion motors, consisting of a hollow body having an enlarged upper end formed with a laterallyextending portion, said laterally-ex- Q tending portion having a screened opening in IOO r v r o of said body, and an internal bafile-plate ar ranged opposite the inner end of said connecting-tube, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 15 my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK THOUROT.
