(Application led Oct. 26, 1901.)

@wh/Moses n? KM UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PERKINS H. DE ROCHEMONT, OF CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNR TO CHARLES HERRON, OFv CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE.
COMBINED CLIP-)ANDH LAP-LINK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,803, dated J' une 3, 1902.
Application filed October 26, 1901. Serial No. 80,097. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: y
Be it known that I, PERKINS H DE'ROOHE- MONT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in a CombinedClip and Lap-Link, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to singletree and doubletree irons, and more particularly to a com; bination clip and lap-link adapted for use as a center or end iron for either singletrees or doubletrees.
The invention comprises a clip or sleeve adapted to be secpred vupon the single or double tree and a pair of swiveled hooks constructed to overlap each other to form a link.
The invention also consists in a clip or sleeve adapted toy encirclefeither the end or center of a singleor doubletree and formed with openings anda pair ofl shouldered hooks provided with heads, said-hooks being adapt-l ed to be insertedthrough the kopenings in the clip and be retained therein by the heads, against which thesingle ordouble tree bears after being inserted vinto the clip.
The construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter inconnection with the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, and its novel features will be defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective of the combined clip and lap-link applied to the end of a'doubletree to serve as a trace-holder. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the device applied to the center of a singletree, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l.
The reference-'numeral l designates a clip or sleeve of oblong form recessed or hollowed out on the inner surface of its front wall, as shown at l2, and formed with openings. This clip is designed to be applied to either single or double trees and is to be made in dierent sizes'to serve leither as a center iron or end iron, as may be desired.
4; and 5 designate hooks, each formed with a head 6 and recessed or flattened on its inner surface to form a shoulder 7 These hooks are adapted to be inserted through the openings 3,' so that `their heads 6 rest against the'inner surface of the recessed front wall of the clip. The recess 2 on the inner side of the front of the clip affords sufficient space to permit the hooks to be freely turned, and when the singletree or doubletree 8 is inserted into the clip the hooks are secured against disconnection from the clips.
As illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, the hooks are adapted to be separated to permit the engagement therewith of a trace or a center connection, as the case may be, and when turned tothe position shown by full lines in all of the figures the hooks form a lap-link, which affords asafe and reliable holder for a trace or center connection and one which may be quickly and easily manipulated to connect or disconnect it.
When overlapped, the free end of each of the hooks lies adjacent to the shoulder 7 of the other, thereby presenting flat flush surfaces on both sides of the link.
The invention may be manufactured in any desired sizes and of anyv suitable metal, and
vwhile especially designed as an attachment for the single or double trees of vehicles may of course be applied to any use for which it may be adapted.
I claiml. A combined clip and lap-link comprising a sleeve recessed on its inner surface and formed with openings, and headed overlapping hooks inserted through the said openings, the heads of said hooks resting in the recessed portion on the inner surface of the sleeve.
2. The combination with a vehicle single or double tree, of an attachment comprising a sleeve formed with openings and adapted to receive the single or double tree, land a pair of overlapping headed hooks recessed or fiattened to form shoulders, said hooks loosely mounted in said openings and prevented from displacement by the said singleV orfdoluble tree.
3. A combined clip and lap-link comprising a sleeve recessed on the inner surface of In testimony whereof I acix my signature its front wail and formed with openings in in presence of two Witnesses. the said recessed portion adapted to receive overlapping headed hooks, the heads of said PERKINS H' DE ROCHEMONT' 5 hooks fitting in the said recess and prevented Witnesses:
from inward movement by the single or dou- W. G. WOODS, ble tree inserted in the sleeve. JAMES D. BENSON.
