FENCE- sri-:GIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed October Z6, 1900.
POST.
Patent No. 701,771, dated June e, 1902.
Serial No. 34,432. (No model.)
.To @ZZ whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that we, RANSOM R. SPOOR, residing at Newark, in the county of Wayne, and JOSEPH M. RAUB, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, State of New York, citizens ofthe United States, have invented certain new f and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art t'o which it appertains to make and use thesame.
Our invention has relation to improvements in fence-posts; and the object is to provide an end fence-post which is provided with simple, efficient, and durable bracing means, so that the stability of the post is insured and established againstdisplacement in all directions.
We accomplish the objects of the invention by the means and constructions illustrated in the accompanying drawings, to be taken as a part of this specification, and wherein- Figure 1 is a side view in elevation of the improvement complete. Fig. 2 is an end View in elevation, showing the connection of the side brace to the post and also showing the gate-hinges in the post. j
A designates the end post, preferably made ofmetal and in cross-section is provided with four flanges I I I I, extending from the cen-' ter of the post at right angles to each other'y One or more of the edges of these iianges are notched, as shown, to provide seats for the wires of the fence, which are connected and secured to the posts in any well-known manner. The post A is of such size and length, as may be desired, and at. the bottom the flanges are separated and turned to horizontal position, as at 3, the turned portions constituting means Afor anchoring and holding the post irmly in the ground.
B designates a metal line-post, which is U- shaped, having a vertical rib 14 on the conveX side of the web of the post. `The lower end ispsplit yand the lianges turned outwardly to form anchoring extensions 4 4 1,'as shown. The rib is notched transversely, as at 15 15, forming seats in which lie the tie-Wires 16 16, passing around the post and having their ends wrapped around the line-wire at opposite sides .of which Vthe gate (not shown) is hung, the
of the post. The post B is set removed from the post A such distance as may be desired or required, andbetween the two posts adjacent to the ground-line is arranged a tie-rod 5, let through a flange on the post A and projected through the post B, and on the threaded end 6 thereof is fitted a clamping and adjusting nut 7, whereby the braces may be stayed and braced.
To brace the post A in the direction ofthe fenc`e,vwe arrange a brace-rod 8, having its lower end seated at the lower end of the post B and its upper end suitably lodged against the post A at the point desired. This brace 8 is preferably a metal sheet or plate bent into U shape in cross-section, so that its lower end may engage the post and straddle and rest uponthe tie-rod, and at its upper end the back is slotted, as at 9, so that the end may straddle the iiange on the post' A, and the metal at the end of the slot engaged in a notch 10 and be held in position. Of course a series of notches similar to the notch 10 may be formed in the post for convenience of placingthe brace S. Y
To stay and brace the post A against lateral displacement, we provide a brace piece or rod II, having anchor-pieces at its base and rounded 'at its upper end and provided with screwthreads on the round portion, which portion is bent over at substantially right angles to the stem and projected through the ange of the post and secured by clamping-nuts at each side of the flange, substantially as indicated.
At the proper points on the post A are secured gate hinges or supports 12 12, consisting of loops of substantialiron rod,in the bend 9o loops being bent or directed at an angle to the stems of the loops or staples, as shown. These hinges or supports are securedzin-thefpost by having their stems threaded and passed through the iiange of the post and clampingnuts 13 arranged thereon;
As shown, the brace-rods and postand-staypost may be made of metal platesbent or rolled in cross-section in U shape on three sides of a rectangle. Y
The elements or parts of the invention are utilized and assembled by first setting the end post A and stay-post B at the proper points, then fixing the stay-rod in position, and then arranging thp braces in connection with the posts, and then the Stringing of the wires may be proceeded with.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The U-shaped adjustable brace in combination with the hanged post, the said brace being pivotally secured thereto, and terminating in the curved neck, the same being threaded at its end and adjustably secured by the nuts to the flange of the post.
2. The combination with the U-shaped adjustable brace and conicaliy-anged post, said brace being pivotally secured thereto, and
terminating in the curved neck; of the tierod 5 threaded at its ends and having securing-nuts, and the slotted U-shaped brace S all arranged and operating substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we aiix our signatures in presence of witnesses.
