SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,759, dated June 3, 1902.
Application filed October 23, 1901l Serial No. 79,727. (Ndmodcl.)
To a/ZZ whom it Indy concern:
Be it known that I, KNOWLTON CYRUS Mc- NEILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chandlersville, in 'the county of Cass and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Oars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make'and use the same.
My invention relatesto oars and oar-locks, and more particularly to that class of oars known as bow-facing oars, which permit the oarsman to be seated so as to face the bow of the boat. Y Y
The primary object of the invention is to provide a jointed bow-facing oar in combination with an oar-lock so constructed as to permit the oars to be either turned to a position close to the side of the boat to avoid obstructions or to be turned over the side into the boat. Y
With this` end in View the invention consists in the construction and combination of devices hereinafter fully described, and deiined in the appended claims and shown in the accompanying drawings,in`which- Figure l is a top plan View of a'portion of the side rail of a row-boat with my improve- Inents applied thereto in position `for r0Win`g.
Fig. 2 isa similar view showing the oar turned over into the boat. Fig. 3 is a vertical 'section of the boat with the oar shown in elevation; and Fig. 4 is a vertical section, on an enlarged scale, of the oar and a portion of one side of a boat.
The referencenumeral l designates the side of the boat, to the inner surface of which is secured the oar-lock, comprising a hook 2, formed at its lower end with laterally-projecting perforated ears 3 to receive securing screws or bolts 4.
The oar consists of a blade-section 5 and a handle-section 6, upon the meeting ends of which are iitted metallic ferules 7 and 8, each formed integral with a segmental gear, (designated, respectively, by the numerals 9 and 10.)
l1 and 12 designate parallel plates, between which the gears are mounted upon pintles 13 and 14. From the lower plate 12 at its inner end depend two parallel ears 15, connected by a cross-rod 16.
The rod 16 engages under the hook 2, as best shown in Fig. 4, and toretain it within the hook I preferably employ a spring-dog 17, secured to the inner face of the hook and having its upper lfree end 18 bent at a right angle to adapt it to project into a slot 19, formed in the inner face of the hook.
The utilityr and operation of the improve-A ment will be readily understood. The gear connectionv of .the oar-sections permits the rower to propel the boat while-facing the bow, as a backward' pull upon the handle ofthe oar forces the blade-section rearward against the water, and-to avoid an obstructionfthe blade-section of the oar may be pulled close to the side of the boat. The distinguishing characteristic of the invention, however, is that the hook form of the oar-lock permits both sections of the oar to be quickly turned over into the boat, which is an important con- `a gear connection and plates between which the gears are supported one of said plates having depending ears connected by al crossrod engaging underthe hook.
2. The combination witha row-boat, of an oar-lock comprising an inwardly-turned hook secured to the inner surface of the side of the boat an oar comprising two sections having a gear connection, plates between which the gears are supported one of said plates having 'depending ears connected by a cross-rod engaging under the hook, and a spring-dog'for retaining the cross-rod in engagementwithv the hook.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.l
. KNOWLTON CYRUS BIC-NEILL.
