A. R. GUSTAFSON. HA-OHINE FOR SHAPING COLLARS OR OTHER LIKE ARTICLES (Application filed Kay 18, 1901.)
(No Modal.)
UNITED STATES,
PATENT OFFICE.
AXEL R. GUSTAFSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO ELECTRIC LAUNDRY MACHINERY 00., OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
MACHINE FOR SHAPING COLLARS OR OTHER LIKE ARTICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,716, dated June 3, 1902. Application filed May 18,1901. Serial No. 60,802. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AXEL R. GUsTAFsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illi nois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Shaping Collars or other Like Articles, of which the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates more particularly to machines for imparting to collars and other like articles the curvature desired for causing them toconform to the neck or other part of the body of the wearer; and it has for its primary object to provide an improved and simple apparatus for that purpose.
With these ends in View my invention consists in certain features of novelty in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts by which the said objects and certain other objects hereinafter appearing are attained, all as fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a plan section of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof 5 and Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 3 3, Fig. 1.
1 is a cylinder or heater, which is preferably closed at top and bottom save for an inlet 2 at the top for steam or other heating medium and an outlet 3 at the bottom for the steam and water of condensation. This cylinder or member is supported by any suitable support or stand, (not shown,) so as to be held rigidly in position with reference to two rollers 4 5, arranged parallel therewith and with their meeting edges opposite a tongue or ridge 6, formed longitudinally on the exterior of the cylinder 1 and being concaved on both sides, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, so that the apex of the tongue or ridge willv point toward the contiguous faces of the rollers 4 5.
The roller 5 is arranged at a slight distance from the concaved face of the'ridge or tongue 6 on one side, and around the roller 4 is wound a quantity of cloth 7 or other suitable frictional material of a similar character, which will enable said roller 4 to serve as a feedroller for feeding the collar or article between the rollers 4 5 and forcing the same against the concave face of the tongue 6 opposite the roller 5. The fabric coating 7 of the roller 4 makes the roller of sufficient diameter to approximately conform to and project against or into close proximity to the concaved side of the tongue 6, which is opposite said roller 4, so that the collar or article passing in between the rollers will inevitably be directed to that side of the tongue 6 which is opposite the roller 5, and in thus causing the collar to take a sharp curve around the roller 5 gives it the desired curvature or shape.
The roller 5 is journaled at its upper and lower ends in plates orbrackets' 8 9, respectively, and is geared to the roller4: by means of gear-wheel 10 on shaft 11 of roller 5, which extends below bracket 9 and may be connected to any suitable driving mechanism, (not shown,) the lower end of shaft 12 of roller 4 being provided with gear-wheel 13, meshing with gear 10. r The shaft 12 is mounted at its upper and lower ends in boxes 14, which slide in slotted ways 15 in the frames or brackets 8 9, and these boxes are held at the proper ad justment by 'means of adjusting-screws 16, passing through plates 17, secured over the ends of the slots 15 in the brackets 8 9 by means of bolts'or screws 18 or other suitable devices. By this means it will be seen that the roller 1 may be adjusted with reference to the roller 5 and also with reference to the shaping ridge or tongue 6.
The brackets 8 9 for supporting the rollers 4 5 may be formed on or secured to the heated member 1 or to any other suitable support, the whole apparatus being supported in the desired position by any suitable means.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a machine for the purpose described the combination of a heated member having a projecting V-shaped tongue formed longitudinally on the surface thereof and provided with concaved sides, a friction-roller arranged to conform to one of said concavesides and a guide member arranged contiguous to said friction-roller and opposite the other'of said concaved sides, substantially as set forth.
- AXEL R. GUSTAFSON.
