TO ALL wnoar 'rr MAY eononnu;
Be it known that I, JAMES F. W001), 2d, of Cohoeton, in the county of Steuben, in the State-ofNewYoi-k, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Brakos'for streetcars, and for other purposes; and
the following-is a full,clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying draw- ,ings making a part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 represents a section through a side elevation.
Figure 2 shows a plan or top view of the frame, car-wheels, and brakes.
The object of my invention isto apply the most simple, cheap, and effective brake to street cars, and may be used for other cars, or any four-wheeled vehicles.
My invention consistsin theapplication of two right-angled levers, so connected together that .they form a- .knueklejoint, bearing directly upon the centres of the bars to which the brake-blocks are attached, the lovers beingoperated by rods orchains connected with the cranks, or hand-wheel shafts, onthe platforms at both ends of the car.
My invention further consists in the adjustable connecting-links, to regulate the distance of the brake-bars, which efi'ects the pressure of the brakes on the wheels, to compensate for the wear of the blocks. Also, the
, sliding suspension-rods, to allow the friction of the wheels to tighten the brakes on them.
To enable others to make and use my invention- I will describe it more fully, referring to the drawings, and to the lettersmarked thereon.
To the truck-frame, or bottom of the car A A, are the four car-wheels, B B B3, hung in the usualman- -ner. The brake-blocks C C beingsecured to the bars D D, are suspended on rods, 6 b, which have an'extcnded link or slot, cc, so that they will slide up on the hook a a in the frame A A,to which they are attached, so that when the blocks C C bear on the wheels 13 B they will slide up and tighten the brakes. Through the centre ofthe bars D D are the adjustable connecting-links cl cl, they having a. screw-nut, e e, on both sides of the bar, so that the joints of the right-angled levers E F may be carried to or from the bars DD, to lengthen or shorten the distance between them, as the brake-blocks C wear ofl' by use, and are easily kept adjusted, the right-angled levers E F being pivoted at their elbows to the connecting-linked 02, so that the horizontal parts come together, and are pivoted, forming a knuckle-joint, f, as seen in fig. 1. To the top ends' of the vertical part of the levers E F are rods g 71, attached, which connect with the cranks I J on the shafts k is at the ends of the platform. If desirable, chains may be used to wind on the shafts of hand-wheels, in the usual manner.
Thus it will be seen that by the action of the knuckle-joint, as construetedand arranged, the power applied to the brakes will be uniform and very great, and easily operated.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The arrangement of the two right-angled levers, so connected together that they form a knuckle-joint, bearing on the centre of the brake barS, operating in the manner substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. I claim the adjustable linksd d and the sliding suspension-rods b b, as arranged for the purposes herein described.
Subscribed to on this 13th day of November, 1866.
JAMES F. WOOD, 2D.
