BENJAMIN W. PEIRCE, 0F NEW BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 70,112, dated October 22, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN GHUGKS.
TO ALL WIIOM IT MAY CONCERN:
- Be it known that I, BENJAMIN W. PEIRCE, of' New Bedford, in the countyo` Bristol, inthe State of Massa.- chusetts, have invented a new and improved Chuck for Bit-Stocks and Lathes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being lia-d to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of' reference marked thereon. l
My invention consists in a. cylinder, with a roller having various-sized l'lutings in its periphery, and a sliding jaw moved by a screw. v I
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention.
Figure 2 is a front vie\v,`tlie dotted lines in which represent its internal arrangement.
Figure 3 is a view from the upper side looking into the cylinder, the roller being removed.
Figure 4 is an end view ofthe iiuted r'oller.
Fig. 1. Al is the cylinder; Bl, fluted roller; C, screw which sets up the slidingjaw; Dl, opening in face of chuck for the admission of bit, drill, or wire; F1, the part of the chuck which enters the socket in bit-stock or lathe. l v
Fig. 2. A2, cylinder; B2, luted roller; C2, screw; D2, opening for admission of bit, etc.; E2, sliding jaw, operated by screw C. Those portions ofthe separate parts ofthe chuck inside the cylinder are represented by dotted lines.
, Fig. 3. A3, cylinder; E3, Aslidingjew; F3, projection to fit the socket of bit-stock or lathe.
Fig. 4. B", end of uted roller.
.' Operation.
The within-described chuck being constructed as herein' shown, its operation may be noted. A drill of the desired size being selected, the roller B2 (see `fig. 2) is turned till a flute corresponding to the size of the drill is opposite the sliding jaw E2. The drill is then introduced into the opening D2, and screw C2 turned in till the drill is' rmly held between roller B2 and slidingjaw E2. For the ready adjustment of the roller, the ,utings may be numbered, corresponding numbers being on the drills.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to securegby Letters Patent, is
The within-described chuck, constructed and operating substantially as set forth.
