SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,098, dated May 27, 1902.
Application filed May 18, 1901.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. SPILLMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pullman, in the county of Whitman and State of WVashington, have invented a new and Improved Cheese-Cutter, of which the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a device for carrying a cheese and facilitating the work of slicing it in regularly-formed pieces.
The device is particularly adaptable for use by retail merchants.
This specificationis a specific description of one form of the invention, while the claims are definitions of the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side view. of the invention. Fig. 2 is a. plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view looking down from the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
The device comprises an annular base a, having a spider a extending across it and provided with a centrally-located pin a on which is arranged a circular table 6, adapted to carry the cheese and capable of turning freely on the base a.

The spider a is dropped below the upper edge of the frame a, as indicated by the dot ted lines in Fig. 1, and the frame a is formed with a segmental reduced portion a, in which fits the free end of a radially-disposed arm 0, pivoted upon the pin a and extending outward over a segmental scale 6, held rigidly on a ledge a formed, preferably, integral with the base a, directly adjacent to the reduced portion a The free end of the arm 0 car ries two lugs c", and between these lugs is pivoted a dog cl, which has a serrated surface cl and which when thrown up in the position shown in Fig. at engages this surface with the edge of the table I), thus fastening the table to the arm 0 and permitting thetable to be turned over the base a. In order that the movement of the table may be adjusted to allow it to be turned the requisite distance to permit a piece of cheese of a predetermined value to be cut from the cheese carried by the table, the scale e is provided with an adjustable stop 6, secured thereto by the set-screw 6 By adjusting the stop on the scale the movement of the arm 0, and consequently the table I) when locked to the arm, can be adjusted to permit a piece of cheese of any desired value to be cut.
Mounted on the base a are two outwardlyprojected stanchions f, between which extends a cross-head g, having recessed ends g, adj ustably fitted on the stanchions. The cross-head g carries a superstructure g on which is fulcrumed a lever it, connected by links 71. with a knife-blade t. This knifeblade passes through a slot in the cross-head g and has its outer edge guided in a groove in the adjacent stanchion f. The inner edge of the knifeo' is guided in a stanchion g risingfrom the cross-head g and located directly over the center of the table I). The knife 2' is of a width greater than the distance the cross-head g is above the table, so that Whenthe knife is lowered into engagement with the table its upper portion will be in engagementwith the stanchion g and its inner edge firmly supported thereby. By arranging the stanchion g on the cross-head g the space below the cross head between the stanchions f is left free, so that a cheese intact can be readily placed upon the table. The hand-lever 7t is preferably constructed of sheet-metal straps, which are separated from each other at the point 79, so as to receive the stanchion g as the lever moves downward. It will be observed that by turning this knife down on the table I) and should a cheese be on the table the cheese will be out radially from its center outward to its periphery.
In operation, the cheese having been placed on the table and the arm 0 locked to the table by the dog d, the stop 6 is adjusted on the scale e according to the value of the piece of cheese to be cut and then the table is turned by the said dog until the arm a rests against the stop or the opposite .end of the scale, according to the direction the table is turned, when the knife is operated by the lever h to cut the cheese.
Various changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of my invention may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I consider myself entitled to all such variations as may lie within the scope of my claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent- 1. In a cheese-cutter, a support, a revoluble table mounted on the support, a segmental scale carried by the support, an arm mounted on the pivot of the table and extending over the scale, a stop adjustably secured on the scale and between which and the end of the scale the arm is adapted to be moved to permit the table to be turned a predetermined distance at each movement of said arm, and a dog pivoted to the outer end of the arm and having a serrated face adapted to engage the table to lock the arm thereto, as set forth.
2. In a cheese-cutter, a base provided with stanchions on its upper face, a cross-head mounted on the stanchions above the base and provided at its center with a stanchion projecting from its upper face, and a reciprocating knife having guided movement on the stanchion of the cross-head and one of the stanchions of the base, as set forth.

4. A cheese-cutter, comprising a base, provided with stanchions, a cross-head adjustably supported on the stanchions above the base, and provided with a stanchion at its center, a reciprocating knife having guided movement in one of the stanchions of the base and the stanchion of the cross-head, a revoluble table mounted on the base, a scale carried by the base, an adjustable stop on the scale, and an arm connected with the base and extending over the scale, as set forth.
5. A cheese-cutter, comprising a base provided with stanchions on its upper face, a slotted cross-head adjustably mounted on the stanchions and provided at its center with a stanchion, a reciprocating knife working in the slot of the cross-head and having guided movement in the stanchion of the said crosshead and one of the stanchions of the base, a
