LOUIS JANSON, OF BROOKLYN, NEWr YORK.
CAR-SEAT. j
SPECIFICATION frrningpart of Letters Patent No. 701,047, dated May 27,1902. Application led September 21, 1901. Serial No. 76,049. (No model.)v
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, LOUIS JANSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn,in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Car-Seat, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a car-seat of that class in which two seats proper are mounted on a common support and connected by devices for causing them to turn in unison.
This specification is a specific description of one form of the invention, while the claims are definitions of the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure lis an elevation of the invention with parts in section. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section thereof, and Fig. 3 is a detail of the latch employed.
a indicates the base, which has two diagonally and oppositely projected horizontal arms a', so formed as to provide circular undercut cavities a2 in their upper faces.
Z) represents the seats, which have fastened to their under sides gears c, disposed horizontally and tted in the cavities a2. The gears have circular flanges c projecting from their bottom sides beyond their peripheries and engaged in the undercut portions of the cavities a2. By these means the seats are held on the base to turn on vertical axes, but are not allowed other movements. ings may be interposed between the gears c and the bottoms of the cavities a2.
CZ indicates two racks, which lie tangentially to the gears 'c and are movable longitudinally in grooves a3 in the arms a', such grooves intersecting the cavities a2. The racks d are connected by a U -shaped bar d', provided on its under side with notches d2, wherewith works a latch e. This latch serves to hold the bar CZ' and racks d in either one of two positionsthat is to say, in the position shown in Fig. 2 or with the racks and bar pushed to the left from the position shown. The latch e is pivotally mounted on top of the base a and is arranged to fall normally into engagement with the bar d. New it is Ballbearclear that by disengaging the latch from the bar d the seats b may be turned on the base from one position to the other and that the parts c, d, and d will cause the seats to turn in unison. The racks d are held in place by the seats a bearing down thereon.
Various changes in the form, proportions,
.and minor details of my invention may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I consider `myself entitled to all such variations as may lie within the scope of my claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of a base, having two undercut cavities therein, two seats, gears fastened tothe seats and having peripheral anges engaged in the undercut cavities, for the purpose specified, and connected racks meshed with the gears.
2. The combination of a base, seats arranged to turn thereon, gears attached to the seats, racks meshed with the gears, a rigid connection between the racks, and a latch for holding the racks in either of two positions, said latch being mounted on the base and engaged with the connections between the racks.
3. The'combination of a base, having two undercut cavities therein, two seats, gears fastened to the seats and having peripheral iianges engaged in the undercut cavities, for the purpose speciiied, connected racks meshed with'the gears, and a latch for holding the racks in either of two positions.
4. The combination of a base having circular cavities in the top thereof and tangential grooves cutting the edges of the cavities, seats, gears fastened to the bottoms of the seats and set revolubly in the cavities, and connected racks lying in the grooves and meshed with the gears.
5. The combination of a base having circular cavities in the top thereof and tangential grooves cutting the edges of the cavities, seats, gears fastened to the bottoms of the seats and set revolubly-in the cavities, connected racks lying in the grooves and meshed with the gears, and a latch for holding the racks in either of two positions.
G. The combination of a base having two IOO undercut cavities therein, two seats, gears connected to the seats and having peripheral anges engaged in the undercut cavities of the base, for the purpose specified, and a connection between the gears tO move them in unison.
7. The combination'of a base having two cavities therein, seats mounted to turn On the base, gears connected with the seats and 10- cat'ed in the cavities, and a connection be- 1o tween the gears to turn theseats in unison.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. Y
l LOUIS JANSON.
