,SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,040, dated May 27, 1902. Application filed August 17, 1901, Serial No. 72,409. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL L. HIRSCHEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oastorland, in the county of Lewis and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chicken-Brooders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in chicken-brooders; and it consists in the provision of means for effectually heating the interior of the apparatus with pure fresh air, a provision of heating mechanism which is separate from the interior of the heating-compartment, whereby the fumes from combustion are conveyed away without mingling with the fresh heated air, means being provided for feeding fresh air to the heatingchamber and of utilizing the cool air within the chamber for the purpose of combustion at the heater, means being also provided for holding the door leading into the brooding chamber partially open, and of means connected with the ventilating-pipe for regulating the draft from the heating apparatus.
The invention relates, further, to various details of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings Figure 1 is a central vertical section through myimproved brooder. Fig. 2 is a vertical section at right angles to the plane in which Fig. l is shown, parts being shown in elevation.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the easing of the apparatus, which has a hinged top 13, and the upper edge of said casing is preferably inclined, so as to give an inclination to the top when closed.
3 designates the bottom of the broodingchamber, which is mounted on cross-pieces D and D, which are fastened to the inner walls of the casing. Intermediate the said crosspieces D and D are cross-pieces E, which are C of the brooder and extend down with their lower faces flush with the lower face of the strip D. Covering the space intermediate the two strips E and the strip D is a metallic plate F, preferably of galvanized iron, forming an air-chamber intermediate said plate and the bottom of brooder, which chamber is closed on three sides and open upon its forward edge, through which ingress of air is allowed at the cut-away portion D in the upper edge of the cross-piece D. The outer face of the casing is apertured, as at G, through which fresh air enters the compartment intermediate the cross-piece D and the front wall away portion D into the chamber between said plate and the bottom of brooder. Said plate F is centrally apertured, as is also the bottom of the brooder immediately above it, said apertures being in registration, and a flange projects upward through said chamber between the plate F and the bottom of the brooder, and a detachable conical-shaped pipe H is adapted to fit over said flange, which tapers slightly upward. Mounted within said tube is a conical deflecting-plate H, which is mounted on the interior wall of said conical tube a short distance above its lower end, the pointed portion of said conical shell being downwardly disposed and provided as a deflector to deflect the heat rising through the central aperture taperin g pipe. Fitted within the aperture in the bottom of the brooder is a cylindrical pipe K, which surrounds said tapering pipe and communicates with the brooding-chamber.
Securedto the under face of the hinged top is a heating-compartment L, having an inverted-V-shaped deflecting-plate fastened to the under face of the hinged top and over the ventilating-tube L, which passes through the hinged top. The bottom of said heating-compartment L is preferably of metal and has a central aperture M, which is provided with a tapering flange N, projecting away from the bottom of said chamber. This flaring or ta poring flange about said aperture is adapted fastened to the under surface of the bottom of said casing before entering through the cutin said plate F from the inner Wall of the to fit over the top of said tapering tube when the hinged cover is closed, so that the products of combustion will pass direct through the tapering tube and into the heating-chamber above,from which they may have exit after the heat rising therefrom has been deflected into various portions of the heating-chamber above through the ventilating-tube at the top. This ventilating-tube, which projects outside the top, preferably has apertures in its circumference, and a sliding collar 0 is mounted upon said tube, and by raising or lowering the same over said apertures the ventilation maybe regulated accordingly as it may be desired to allow a lesser or a greater quantity of heat to make exit.
Surrounding the lower edge of the heatingchamber, which is fastened to the hinged cover of the casing, are strips Q, which project down a suitable distance below the bottom of the chamber, and cloth flaps R may be fastened to the said st rips and hang down a location adjacent to the bottom of the brooder, thus separating the space underneath the heatingchamber on the hinged top from the outside space within the brooder, making a compartment of higher temperature adjacent to the tapering tube and afiording a space of lower temperature outside the flaps.
On either side of the bottom of the brooder are cut-away portions S, whereby the air, becoming ,cool within the brooding-chamber, settles into the space at the lowest portion of the casing, where it comes in contact with the burner and olfers air for combustion purposes, the bnrner being positioned underneath the central aperture in the plate F.
In the front wall of the casing of the brooder is an aperture which .is regulated by a sliding door T, which may be raised or lowered and held in any desired position by means of a spring T, one end of which is fastened to the inner face of the casing,wliile its free end bears frictionally against the inner: face of said door with sufficient force to hold it in any desired location. Suitable side apertures W, covered with glass, are provided,
whereby the interior of the brooding-chamber may be seen from without.
From the foregoing it will be observed that I have provided a brooder whereby diiferent temperatures may be had within the brooding-chamber, means being provided for heating the fresh air before it enters the .chamher and heating apparatus whereby the cool air forming in the brooding-chamber settles and is utilized for feeding the heating apparatus, and the fumes of combustion and the foul air within are conveyed through to the ventilating-pipe and the outside atmosphere without mixing with the pure air within.
While I have described an apparatus substantially as shown, it will be understood that I reserve the right to make alterations in the construction of the apparatus without departing from the sphere of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is e A chicken-brooder, comprising a casing, a brooding-chamber therein, cross-pieces E, E and D secured to the under surface of the bottom of said chamber, a metallic plate secured to the under edges of said strips, and forming the top to a heater-containing compartment having imperforate surrounding walls, and communicating passage-Ways S with the brooding-chamber, a fresh-air chamher with apertures G in the wall of the casing, leading thereto, a partition D with elongated passage-way D cut through its upper portion above said metallic plate, and affording means of communication between said fresh-air chamber and the heating-space intermediate said plate and the bottom of the brooding-chamber, an open-ended cylindrical shell K mounted in an aperture in the brooding-chamber, a heating-compartment in the upper portion of the casing, a funnel H communicating with the heater-containing compartment and said heating-compartment in the upper portion of the casing, with a passage- Way intervening between said funnel and shell, whereby fresh heated air enters the brooding-chamber, as set forth.
