'WI LLIAM MARK SCRUGGS, OF MONTEAGLE, TENNESSEE.
GUN-CARTRIDGE.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 700,983, dated Ma an-19 2.
' Application filed September 29,1900. SerialNo- 81,580. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be' it known that I, WIDLIAM MARK :SCRUGGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monteagle, in the county of Marion and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Gun-Oartridge, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in, cartridges for firearms;
and. its object is to provide an improved construction of cartridge, in which the'cap mayjbe quicklyand conveniently positioned, said cartridge carrying means for cleaning the-barrel of the firearm and provided withan improved projectile and with means for relieving the jar or jumping of the gun when the same is fired.
With the above object in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described,particushell in loading.
larly' pointed out in the claim, and clearly illustrated by the accompanying drawing, which-is a longitudinal sectional view of a cartridge embodying my invention.
Referring. nowmore particularly .to said drawing, A designates the shell of the car tridge, havinga tapering recess to receive the cap B, the side walls of which are tapered, as
clearly illustrated. By forming the cap with a slight taper and providing the shell with a corresponding recess said cap may bevery conveniently and quickly positioned in the O designates a ric and inserted in the shell abutting against the closed inner end thereof. This plug has its outer face 'formed concave, as illustrated, and is provided with a centrally-disposed taperin g openingto receive the cap. Positioned in the shell intermediate its ends is the cleaning device, consisting of an expand-ing wad D, formed of pulp or fabric and concaved in both of its faces, positioned between the plug 0 and the wad D, and will be retained in the shell in a mass, having bothof its ends convexed.
F designates the projectile, which is formed plug formed of ,pulp or fab- -1ug secured-at the as illustrated. The powder E is" convexed at both of its ends, the inner end thereof fitting in the concaved outer face of the wad D. Formed in the inner end of said projectile is a cavity G, which makesthe inner end of said projectile lighter than the outer end thereof. lighter the projectile does not deviate from a straight line when end.
When the cartridge is fired, the'wad D expands and is driven 'forwa'rd, removing all dirt and powder from the gun-barrel which has accumulated therein. The plug 0 and the wad D having their opposing faces formed concaved, the powder positioned therebetween is retained in the shape of a cylindrical mass, having both its ends rounded. This-relieves the gun of rear pressure and prevents the jarring or j umping thereof when fired.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
By making the inner end.
A cartridge comprisinga tapering shell and contracted at it forward end, a tapering plug fitted into the rear end of the shell and having the tapering opening-adapted to receive the cap, the forward faces of said plug being concaved and a'projectile convex at both ends and fittinginto the contracted end of the shell, the inner end of said projectile having a recess produced therein, and a wad arranged inecontact with the rear end of the projectile, said wad having its front and rear faces concaved and the explosive adapted to be contained in the shell between the concaved face of the plug and wad, said wad bejuncture of the main portion of Ith'e shell and the contracted forward end, substantially as described.
