To all? whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that LGEORGFRIEDRIGH RICH- TER, engineer, a subject of-the Kingof Prussia, German Emperor, residing at Kurfiirstenstrasse 10, Stettin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional Retorts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which-it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to sectional retorts, and more especially to the form of the ends of the sections of such retorts, so as to completely and securely lock them together and prevent unevennesses at the bottoms of the retorts at their joints, which is a great objection in the dry distillation of coal, ore, and other materials for which retorts are used. Heretofore the sections of such retorts had simple butt-joints, which enabled them to easily slip apart and made it quite difficult to prop erly aline the sections when setting them up for use, so that it was difficult to make the bottom of the retort perfectly even, so as not to have abutting ends out of alinement, form ing ridges,in which distillation products would be apt to hang or settle and quite often run through the joints when not well luted.
The objectof my invention isto produce a sectional retort in which the sections cannot be displaced in one or more directions, that will give an even bottom, and also provides means for securely locking these sections together, making it oonsiderablyeasier to set them up and to aline their various parts. 7
Referring to the drawings, in which like parts are similarly designated, Figure '1 is a section, and Fig. 2 a plan of the same, of one form of joint. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of a retort in position; Fig. 4 a section, and Fig. 5 a plan, of another form of joint; Fig. 6, a section; Fig. 7, a plan thereof; and Fig. 8 is a section, and Fig. 9 the plan, of other forms. In Figs. 1 and 2 is shown a joint composed of parallel faces a b and c d, which are perpendicular when the retort is in place. from being displaced in the direction of the arrows 1 and 2. Fig. 3 shows such atwo-section retort in position. In Fig. 4; there is a similar offset 1) o, and the walls a b and c d instead of being perfectly straight are arranged to make an angle or form a wedge f at the top and bottom of the retort, fitting into a complementary portion g on the other section. Figs. 6 and 7 show a joint in which there isformed at the top and bottom a similar angle-or wedge in the sections 00 y, and at the sides instead of having a simple offset there is a key ortongue g, fitting into complementary socketh, and Figs. 8 and 9 show sections in which two portions are held together by a species of dovetail joint or tongue g and groove 72, there being four of'these on the circumference of the retort and in vertical plane when the retort is in its inclined operative position. Thus the sections are keyed together and prevent displacement in all directions, making it easy for workmen to aline the sections and properlylute them when placing the retorts in the furnace and giving a perfectly evenbottom, over which the contents of the IGtOYlICfiJII't-BfldllY slide-a joint that will not be displaced'during the operation.
The form and number of the ,interfitting tongues or dovetails at a joint can be varied at will and can be made as well on retorts designed to lie horizontal as on those designed to be inclined.
Having thus described my invention, what I declare as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,'is- I 1.-A ret0rt'divided transversely into sections, the end of each section formed by planes atan angle 'tothe axis'of'the retort, and ofisets between the planes to form locking members, substantially as described.
2. A retort divided transversely into sections, the end of each section formed by parallel planes cutting the axis of the retort, an angle to form two abutting faces'andan olfset between the two faces, substantially as described.
3. A retort divided transversely into sections, the end of each section formed by parallel planes cutting the retort to about itsme= dial line, and an offset between the planes at about its medial line, substantially as described.
4. A retort divided transversely into sections, the end of each section formed by two pairs of parallel planes, said pairs of planes at an'angle to each other and to the axis of the retort, and an offset between the planes of a pair, substantially as described.
5. A retort divided transversely into sections, the end of each section formed by two pairs of parallel planes, cutting the retort to its vertical medial line, said pairs of :planes at an angle to each other and to the axis of the retort, and an offset between the planes of a pair at about the lateral medial line, substantially as described.
