BRICK-FIRE-BOX CONSTRUCTION.

To al?, whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM C. BLACK- Monn and GUY Evnnn'rr Sror, both citizens of the United States, residing at Galveston, in the county of Galveston and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful 1mprovements in Brick-Fire-Box Construction; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in iire box construction and more particularly to the lining for a tire box of a locomotive using oil as fuel, and is a divisional application of our former Patent No. 902,301, dated June 21, 1910.
The object of the present invention is to provide a iire box lining which is constructed of interlocking bricks so arranged that saine may not be shaken apart by the vibration of the locomotive.
Another object of the invention is to provide a fire box lining formed of bricks which are iirinly held in place without the use of cement, and can be readily disassembled by removing one of the side or end bricks.
With the above and other objects in view, as will be more fully understood as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain combinations and arrangement of the parts hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a tire box constructed in accordance with our involition. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the lining removed from the casing. Fig. 3 shows a side elevation and plan of one of the corner bricks. Fig. i shows a side elevation and plan of an end brick. Fig. 5 shows a side elevation and plan of another corner brick, and Fig. 6 shows a side and edge elevation and also a plan of the form of bricks used in the side walls of the fire box.

bricks are provided with longitudinally extending tongues 7, for a purpose hereinafter explained. The corner brick 3 is preferably provided with a right angular' portion 8 for abutting against the side wall brick to be presently described. rli`he corner bricks 2 and t have vertical angular recesses 9 for receiving the side wall bricks and the corner brick 5 is formed with a plain inner side. The end bricks 10 taper toward the bottom and forni a wedge, the inclined edges of which are provided with longitudinal grooves 11 for receiving the tongues of the corner bricks.
r1`he bottom is composed of ordinary iiat bricks 12 arranged transversely of the fire box in a central position and are of such a length as to have a space at each end thereof for the lower ends of the side wall bricks. shown in Fig. 0 of the drawings, each side brick consists of a flat body 13, having integrally formed therewith, a lateral oit-set portion 14 which inclines inwardly fr m the upper edge preferably on a curve and the lower inner edge of said off-set portion is provided with a recess as at 15, to form a ledge for overlapping the ends of the bottom bricks.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it is apparent that when the bricks are in assembled positions` (as best 'illustrated in Fig; 2 of the drawings), the bottom bricks are held in place by the side bricks, the end wedge bricks force the corner bricks against the adjacent side wall bricks and an interlocked lining constructed in this manner will be securely held. in position. By lifting one of the side bricks or an end wedge brick perpendicularly, the lining can be readily disassembled and removed for the purpose of repairs, or replaced by a new lining.
1t is to be understood that slight changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit Vof the invention.
1What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a fire box lining, the combination of corner bricks having enlarged bases, bottom bricks abutting the inner sides of the l force them outwardly toward the side bricks.
2. In a re box lining, the combination of corner bricks having oppositely inclined edges forming enlarged bases, the inclined edges of the corner bricks being provided with longitudinally extending tongues, bottom bricks abutting` the inner faces of the corner bricks, side bricks having inwardly projecting ledges adapted to overlap the bottoni bricks, wedge-shaped end bricks adapted to be interposed between the corner bricks, and the inclined edges of said wedge-shaped bricks being provided with longitudinal grooves to receive the tongues on the corner bricks.
3. In a tire box lining, the combination of corner bricks having oppositely inclined edges forming enlarged bases, the inclined edges of the corner bricks being provided with longitudinally extending tongues, bottom bricks abutting the inner faces of the corner bricks, side bricks having inclined off-set portions adapted to overlap the ends of the bottom bricks and the vertical edges thereof abutting the adjacent side bricks, wedge-shaped end bricks adapted to be interposed between the corner bricks, and the inclined edges of said wedge-shaped bricks being provided with longitudinal grooves to receive the tongues on the corner bricks.
4. In a fire box lining, the combination of corner bricks having oppositely inclined edges forming enlarged bases, the inclined edges of the corner bricks being provided with longitudinally extending tongues, bot` tom bricks abutting the inner faces of the corner bricks, side bricks having inwardly curved off-setportions adapted to overlap the ends of the bottom bricks and the vertical edges thereof abutting the adjacent bricks, one of the corner bricks having an angular portion for fitting against the iirst side brick to till the space its offset portion makes therewith, two of the other corner bricks diagonally opposite each other having recesses therein for receiving the vertical edges of the adjacent side bricks, wedgeshaped end bricks adapted to be interposed between the corner bricks, and the inclined edges of said wedge-shaped bricks being provided with longitudinal grooves to receive the tongues of the corner bricks.
