I I SPECIFICATION fuming part of letters Patent No.- 700,405, dated May 1902.
. Application filed May 9, 1900. Serial No. 16,109- (llo model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
,Be it known that I, PETER BU HE'R, a sub- 'ject of the Emperor ofGermany, and a resimy invention.
. .earbid-h olders.
dent of Mannheim,Germany, have invented certain new; and useful Improvements in Acetylene-Generating. Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
I "My present invention relates to acetylene. generatingapparatus, the object being to provide an automatically-operating apparatus of this kind; and it consists in mechanism constructed and combined as hereinafter fully described. 1
In the accompanying-drawings, Figure'l is a transverse section of apparatus embodying Fig. 2 is a section at right au gles to that of Fig. 1 and taken in front of the- Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective view of the disengaging shaft engaged with certain of the carrying-levers for the carbid-holders. I 7
Referring to the drawings, 0 represents a water-tank, having an inclined partition 1) ex tending from the casing above fluid-level to a point therebelow andvfo'rming the gas-chamber c. 1 Opening in to the latter isa gas pipe (1, extending downward therefrom and through the wall of the tank a, said pipe serving to lead acetylene.- gas from the chamber to a range of jets or a holder. Another pipe d leads gas to the gas-holder B.
' In the side walls of the tankais jourualed a horizontal shaft e, supporting rigidly a suitable restoring rod or bar f, extending below the shaft as a loop or bridge from one sideof the tank to the other for the purpose herein after described, and a loosely-mounted series of carriersdh k h h h, &c., serving to re-' ceive the carbid-holders g 9 g y, g", &c. At the top of the tank a, is journaled another graft 2, provided with catches k k k k k,
c., which are longer or shorter in accordance with the distance to which the shaft 13 has to be-rocked'from normal to disengage them and'which are preferably arranged on a helicoidal line. Said catches engage holes Lprovided at the upper end of the carriers h h &c., and retain said carriers elevated so [long as they are engaged.
The operation of the automatic acetylene- .generating apparatus is as follows: When the carriers h h, &c., are turned up against the partition I), the shaft 1', with its catches k M,
the carriers h if, &c.-so that the center of gravity of said carbid-holders is at some dis.- tance in front of the axis of the shaft e. Said 650., is turned toward the front, so that the carbid-holders may be perforated or of any suit-able construction, as shown, and theyhave an. end gate sliding in ways or grooves for the insertion of carbid. -If it is desired to start the'apparatus, the catch it is disengaged by hand, \vhereupon'the carrier h and its c'trbid-holder g swing over and downwardly, as indicated in dotted lines, into the tank (land under the partition or hood I where acetylene -'gas isgenerated. Said acetylene-gas flows through the pipe d to burners or through the pipe d into the gas-holder B, which rises correspondingly. As the acetylene-gas is con sumed the gas-holder is lowered, and this movement is transmitted to the shafti through the agency of a chain or sto'p or any suitable device and the crank-arm n secured on said shaft, whereby the latter is rotated in. accordance with the lowering of the gas-holder and operates to disengage the second catch it",
and therefore thecarbid-holder carrier 72.
whereby the second carbid-holder 9 drops by This is repeated until all the carbid-holders' to this end is the chain 0, attached at one end to the crown of the gas-holder, thence off and the gas-holder sinks the weight will be drawn up until it strikes the lever and rocks-it sufficiently-to disengage the first the action of its own weight into the tank a.
are dropped, into thetank. A simple means catch. The nexttime the holder sinks it will I go a little farther, lifting the weight against the lever far enough to disengage the second catch, and so on, sinking farther and farther each successive time.
For removing the carbid-holders from .the-
tank a all that isnecessary to do is to rotate the shaft ein a direction opposite to that of the down movement of the carbid-holders,
which maybe effected by means of the crank 912, secured to said shaft. &c., resting on the restoring arm or rod f, fast on the shaft e, are thus raised, together with the carbid-holders, which may then be refilled or replaced by others. Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by'Letters Pat- 1. In the improved acetylene-gas-generating apparatus, the combination with a watertank and a shaft journaled in walls of said tank, of a series of carriers loosely mounted on said shaft, having holes in their. upper ends and adapted-t0 receive a series of interchangeable carbid -holde'rs, another shaft first-mentioned shaft, a
The levers h h 2. In the improved acetylene-gas-generating apparatus, the combination with a watertank and an inclined partition extending downwardly from the top of said tank and forming a gas-collectinghood, of a shaft journaled in the walls of the latter,'a series of carriers loosely mounted on said shaft, having holes in their upper ends apd adapted to receive arbid-holders, a second shaft journaled above the partition, a series of curved catches progressively increasing in length and arranged on said upper shaft and engaging the holes in the loosely-mounted levers,
a bridged restoring-rod secured on the firstmentioned shaft and upon which drop the levers in operation, means for rotating the lever-carrying shaft, and means for transmit ting the down movement of the gas-holderto the ,upper shaft, substantially as set forth.
.In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
PETER BUCHER.
