Be it known that I, E. SIIOPBELL, of Ashland, in the county of Ashland, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Slot Machines; and'I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full and complete description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- I Figure 1 is a perspective view of the machine.

A, fig. 1, represents a block, in which is fitted a steel plate, B, provided with an elongated hole or slot, C.

This plate forms the bed or die of the machine. To this die is fitted a punch, D, which is of the same width and thickness as the length and width of the slot, and is constructed with two cutting lips, E, fig. 4, forming together an angular indentation in the blade of the punch, as shown in the drawing. F, fig. 1, is a guide hinged to. the side of the die, and which is also provided with a slot corresponding in shape and size to the slot in the die, 'with which it conforms when shut down upon it, as shown in fig. 2.

The practical use and application of this machine is as follows: The plate or sheet in which the hole is to be punched is laid'upon the (lie, and retained thereon by clamping it down by the guide, the said guide being fastened down by the button G. The punch or chisel is inserted in the slot of the guide, and then driven down through the sheet into the die, thereby cutting a hole in the sheet corresponding in character to that in the die. The lips of the punch, in consequence of the peculiar angle given them, cut out the hole by a sliding or shear-like action of the lip, instead of driving the burr through squarely, as is the way of an ordinary punch; hence the slot cut by this machine is clean, smootlnand free from bilge on the lower side.

What I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The punch or chisel D, provided with angular ,cutting lips E, in combination with the die B and hinged guide F, when arranged in the manner and for the purpose described.
