UNITE STAT S PAT NT OFFICE.
OLIVER JONES, OF KANSAS CITY, KANSAS.
BOLT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION formingpart'of Letters Patent No. 700,204, dated l VIayB O, 1902.
Application filed April 18, 1901. $erial No. 56,469. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing'at Kansas City, in the'county of Wyandotte and State of Kan sas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inBolt-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bolt-locks; and my object is to produce a lock of exceedingly simple, strong; and durable construction which can be manufactured cheaply and'employed in the majority of connections where it is desirable to employ means for guarding against the accidental withdrawal of the bolt.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel and peculiar features of construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that it may be fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings,
- in which with at least two threaded holes 2, said holes being adapted to be engaged by the threaded ends of bolts 3, which bolts are provided with angular heads 4 of the configuration shown or of any other suitable form.
-5 designates the clamp-plate, the same be ing provided with holes 6, through which bolts 3 are adapted to loosely extend, with their heads bearing squarely against the plate. Said plate is also provided with one or more holes 7 to receive the pin or pins 8, the latter being adapted to extend through said holes. in the opposite direction to bolts 3 and have their heads 9 engagingtheoppositeside of the plate from the heads of said bolts, and. said head-ed pins are provided with longitudinal slots 10 for a purpose which hereinafter appears.
11 designates a guard-plate, the same being Fig. 2 is a side view of aher'einafter appears.
adapted to rest upon plate 5 and having openings 12, corresponding in form and of size to fit snugly upon the angular heads 4 of bolts 3 in order to prevent any possibility of said bolts turning and thereb becomin disen a ed 3 b b b with plate 1.' Said plate 11-is also provided with holes 13,1'egistering'with holes 7 and adapted to receive the slotted pins 8, and in order to clamp said plate firmly and reliably down upon plate 5 spring cotters or keys'14 are employed, said keys being wedge shape .edgewise, so that when driven through slots 10 of pins 8 they shall, bywedging themselves between plate 11 and the outer end of the slot, draw the pins through holes 7 and 13 until their heads shall bear with great pressure against the lower side of plate 5.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that when the object is secured tightly between plates 1 and 5 and the parts of the bolt-lock engaged, as explained, it will be absolutely impossible for plate 1 to become disengaged from the bolts short of a breakage, the fact that two bolts engage the plate-absolutely guarding against any rotative action on the part of the latter, like a nut.
In'Fig. 2, which illustrates the form of a well-knowntype of car-truck, the form of the parts is varied to accommodate the particular application. In this case the'bolts 19 of the truck'proper have their squared heads engaging the squared openings of plate 11 and extendthrough plate 5, interposed between the'top of the truck and plate 11, each end of said plate 5 being laterally enlarged and provided with a hole 7 and with a pair of holes 6 at opposite sides of hole 7, said holes 6 being distance apart slightly greater than the width of the truck-frame for a'purpose which The threaded ends of bolts 19 engage plates 1 which in this case are of the configuration shown in Fig. 4., there being one of said plates 'for'each bolt 19, and said plates are provided with a pair of holes 2, in vertical alinement with holes 6 of plate 5, to receive the threaded ends of thebolts 3, disposed at opposite sides of the frame and engaging holes 6, said bolts being prevented from turning by having the inner sides of their heads snugly engaged by the side edges of plate 11, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4, and said plate 11 is held reliably in engagement with the heads of bolts 3 and 19 by means of the slotted pins and spring eotters or keys. At the opposite ends of the truck the bolts are secured in practically the same manner as in Fig. 1, the only difference being that one headed pin and spring cotter or key is shown, a single one being employed, as the plates are short.
From the above description it will be apparent that I have produced a bolt-locking mechanism which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of invention, and while Ihave illustrated and described its preferred embodiment and applications it is to be understood that I contemplate its application in all connections possible where it is desirable to prevent the withdrawal of a bolt, and it will also he understood that, as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, its peculiar formation maybe varied in minor particulars without departing from the principle of construction involved.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a car-truck, embodyingvertical angular-headed bolts 19, a plate 5 through which said bolts extend and interposed between said heads and the top of the truck, plates underlying the truck and provided with threaded holes receiving the threaded ends of said bolts, vertical bolts at opposite sides of the truck extending through said plate and having angular heads resting upon said plate, and threaded ends engaging the u nderlying plates, a plate 11,upon the firstnamed plate and provided with openings snugly fitting the heads of the truck-bolts and engaging the heads of the other bolts to prevent them from turning, slotted pins extending up through the first-named plate and plate 11, and having their heads underlying the first-named plate, and wedge-shaped cotiers or keys engaging said slots and the upper side of said plate 11, to clamp said plate tightly down upon the first-named plate, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
OLIVER JONES.
