E. TO ALL WHOM I'I MAY CON CERN Be it known that I, HENRY M. QUAc-KENBL'SII, of Herkimer, in the county ot' Herkimer, and State of New York, have invented a, new and useful improvement in Extension-Ladders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming-part of this specification, in which` Figure`1 is a front elevation of my ladder. My invention consists in a novel arranffement of the parts of au extension-laddcr, whereby the extension designates the stationary ladder, and B the sliding ladder. lhe ladde each side, a clip, a, which is secured to the sliding ladder I3, and passes over t is bent up on the under side, so that it holds the ladders together, but at the same-time permits the ladder B to be slid up and down. The ladder A carries at its 'upper end a similar clip, I), but in this instance vthe clip is fastened to the ladder A, and passes over the outside of the ladder l), and is bent up so as to hold the two togetherL and, like the former instance, permits the ladder B to have a sliding motion.

scoured to the ladder A, near its top end, and the rope then passes down and is thrown over, say the lower round of theladdel A, and the end fastened to the lower end of the ladder B. 'Il itis only necessary to draw down upon the rope or cord C, say at or about t on fig. 1.

A guard-nger,f, is pivoted to the hook on its outer side, which is so made as to naturally fall downward, as represented in iig. 2, and thus not at. all interfere with the operation of the hook when sliding up the ladder B. New, when the ladder B is to be lowered, this finger is raised by striking against the rounds, and this throws the hook out 0f the way, and the ladder is slid down readily. 'lhe hook l) -is disengaged from the round on the ladder A, on which it rests, when it is desired to lower the ladder B, by first elevating or sliding the ladder B so aste bring the guarddinger j! above the round. This extension-ladder is simple in all its features, and it can be worked easily, and none of its parts arc likelyv to get out of order;

What I claim as new, and desire to secure .by Letters latcnt, is` i 1. The hook, having an inclined top,
