PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES F. MOORE, OF FAIRLAND, INDIAN TERRITORY.
CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 700,067, dated May 13, 1902.
Application filed May 25,1901. erial No- 6l,9l 8. (N model.)
To all whmn it may concern.-
Be itknown that 1, Litres F. Moons, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairland, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to chairs, and particularly to that class of chairs in'which a hinged and yielding back is employed.
The object of the present invention is to provide means whereby the back of an ordinary chair may be pivotally mounted with relation to the chair-seat and supported by means of a spring-cushion, which will allow the chair-back to yield, thereby rendering the chair more comfortable in use and adapting the chair particularly for the operators of type-writers and other machines, the back of a chair forming a brace and yielding support for the back of the operator while manipulating the machine.
A further object of theinvention is to provide means for locking the back-cushioning device, so as to hold the back rigid.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear more fully in the course of the ensuing description.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a chair constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the chair. Fig. l
is a plan view showing segregated details of the chair-cushioning device.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
The present invention is applicable to chairs of ordinary construction, embodyinga chairseat and supporting-legs 11. In carrying out the present invention the chair-back 12, which is of ordinary. construction, has'the' side arms thereof pivotallyconnected at their lower ends, as at 13, to upwardly-projecting extensions 14 of the rear legs or chair-bottom, so that the chair-back may be swung forward or rearward to give it the desired inclination with respect to the chair-bottom. A lever 15 has its upper end rigidly connected to the chair-back by means of a clamp 15, which is shown as secured to one of the horizontal or cross rails 16 of the chair-back, while the opposite end of said lever is pivotally connected'at 17 to a plunger 18, provided intermedivate'its endswith an enlarged shoulder 19 and formed beyond such shoulder with a rack extension 20, provided with a number of notches 21, the purpose of which will herein- .is normally urged outward by means of a coil-spring 24, which surrounds the rack eX- -tension 20 and bears against the shoulder 19 of the plunger, the expansive properties of the spring serving to normally hold the plunger outward and the back of the chair in a substantially vertical position.
In order to lock the plunger and render the spring inactive, the tube 22 is provided with a notch 25, inwhich operates the nose or point of a latch 26 of elbow shapepivotally connected at 27 to a bracket or lug depending from pl anger-tube onthe bottom of the chairseat, said latch having pivotally connected thereto at 28 a latch-operating rod 29, which passes through a" guide 30 on the bottom of the chair and is provided at its outer extremity with a button or operating-head 31, against which operates a small coil-spring 32, which holds the operating-rodnormally outward, so as to maintain the engagement between the point of the latch and any desired notch in the rack extension 20 of the plunger.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that when the latch is thrown out of operation the back of the chair is adapted to yield automatically under the pressure of the back of the person sitting in the chair, the chair-back forming an efficient yielding support and brace for the back of the operator. At the same time the chair-back may-bead- It will be understood that after the latch i 2G'h'asbeen' placed in engagen lent'with oneof the notches 21 the'b'ack cannot swing forward until the plunger '18 is released; The
' removed therefrom the plunger will slide back until stopped by the latch. I I to ment of the back, and as'soon as pressure is,
'It will be'ohvious that some slight modifications may bemadeinthe general construction and arrangement of parts described \vith-,
out materially affecting results,and I desire I it understood that'thongh I prefer this particular form equivalent means may be used without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention I I I Having'th'us'fullypdescribed niyinven'tion;
