Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. HIEBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barbers Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 isa perspective view of the chair, showing the different parts properly assembled. Fig.2 is a section showing a portion of the pivoted stool-arm and the stool in section, together with its connecting-bar. Fig. 3 is a detached view of one of the back socket-plates, together with its connecting-lug. Fig. 4c is a view showing the pivoted stool-arm connection, illustrating said parts disconnected. Fig. 5 is a view showingap'ortion of the antifriction-ball-holding disk and one of the balls. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the chair, showing the back thereof and illustrating certain parts broken away. Fig. 7 is a detached view of the chair-releasing mechanism. Fig. 8 is a view showing a portion of the fixed seatframe, also illustrating the catch-knob detached, together with the nut for holding the same, the clamping-nut being omitted. Fig. 9 is a View showing a portion of the seatframe, together with the leg or foot-rest supports. Fig. 10 is a view showing a portion of the side of the chair or arm-support and the mechanism for holding the arm and back of the chair in fixed adjustment. Fig. 11 is a view showing a portion of the rock-bar and the pull-rod. Fig. 12 is a sectional view of the sliding arm. Fig. 13 is a view showing a portion of the seat-socket and its post.

The present invention has relation to barber-chairs; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

In the accompanying drawings, 1 represents the chair-base, which in the present instance consists of suitable legs and the center formed into a socket 2 to form a proper support for the chair-spindle 3.

The seat-frame i is formed of a size to correspond with the size of the chair-seat proper, reference being had to the proper connection, the upholstered seat 5 being located upon the seat-frame 4.

To the seat-frame 4 are connected the armsupporting sides (3, which are bolted to the seat-frame or otherwise connected, and for the purpose of providing a means for pivotally connecting the back the upward-extending arms 7 are provided, which upward-extending arms form a support and pivotal point for the chair-back 8. To the upper ends or portions of the

9 and 10 are connected the bars 11, which bars are located and arranged substantially as shown in Fig.

10 and are for the purpose of providing a guide for the sliding plates 12, which sliding plates are provided with the downward-extending lugs or ears 13, said lugs or cars being located upon opposite sides of the fixed plates 11 and extended below the bottom or lower edge of said fixed plates and the lower ends provided with the cross-pins 14, which cross-pins when placed in proper position in the ears 13 come directly under the guideplates 11.

To the seat-frame of the chair is journaled in any convenient and well-known manner the rock-bar 15, which rock-bar is provided with the operating handle or lever 16, which lever is located upon the outside of the armsupports. To the rock-bar 15 is connected the lateral arm 17, to the bottom or lower end of which is pivotally connected the rod 18, which rod extends upward through the arm 10, and its top or upper end is arranged to engage one of the notches 18 located in the bottom or under side of the sliding plate 12, said sliding plate being reinforced or enlarged at its rear end, so as to provide a sullicient amount of metal to give said plate the desired amount of strength.

To the rear ends of the two sliding plates are pivotally connected the links 19, which links are extended rearward and are connected to the back 8 by means of the bolts 20, which bolts are connected to the plates 21, said plates being provided with screw-threaded apertures 22, and for the purpose of providing a screw-threaded aperture of sufficient depth to properly hold the connecting-bolts the plates 21 are provided with the extensions 23.

It will be understood that when the upper end of the rod 18 is engaged with one of the notches 18 the sliding plate 12 will be held against longitudinal movement, and thereby lock the back 8 in position; but when it is desired to change the angularity of the back the lever 16 is moved in the direction 7 indicated by the dotted lines, Fig. 10, which movement disengages the rod 18 from the notches 18 at which time the back is free to be turned upon its pivotal points, and when brought into its adjustment the lever 16 is moved into its normal position, which elevates the rod 18 and engages its upper end with one of the notches 18", and for the purpose of insuring the engagement of the rod 18 a spring, such as 24, is employed, which spring is located in the enlarged hollow portion 2 of the arm 10 and comes under the head 26, as illustrated in Fig. 10.

For the purpose of providing a means for supporting and guiding the

27, 28, and 29 a lower plate 30 is provided, which lower plate is connected by means of suitable clamping-bolts 31. The drawers may be provided with the hinged covers 32, which covers are hinged by means of a rod 33 or its equivalent, and for the purpose of automatically elevating the cover when the drawer or drawers are pulled outward, as illustrated in Fig. 6, reference being had to drawer 29, a spring, such as 34, is employed, which spring elevates the cover 32 after it has passed from under the seat-frame 4, and when the drawer is brought into its normal position the cover will be closed as it passes under the seatframe 4.

The seat-frame 4 is provided with the downward-extending socket 35, which downwardextending socket rests upon the spindle 3,

which spindle is supported by the base of the chair, and for the purpose of holding the spindle.3 in fixed position a set-screw 36 is provided, which set-screw is passed through the housing of the spindle-socket 3, said housing being extended downward from the upper end of the base.

For the purpose of locking the chair proper against horizontal rotation the spindle 3 is provided with any desired number of apertures, such as 37, into which apertures the innor end of the sliding bar 38 is seated. It will be understood that when the sliding bar 38 is detached. from any given aperture 37 the chair is free to rotate upon its fixed spindle 3, and in order to provide a means for removing the sliding bar 38 it is provided with a link 39, to the outer end of which link is connected the pull-bar 40, which pull-bar is provided with a hook 41,adapted to engage the lug 42 and hold the sliding bar 38 out of engagement with any given recess 37, and for the purpose of providing a means for easily operating the pullbar it is provided with a suitable ring 43 or its equivalent.

To the front or forward end of the seat-frame 4 are connected the leg-rest bars 44,which legrest bars are or maybe of ordinary construction and form no particular part of the present invention.

One of the legs 1 of the chair-base proper is provided with a stool-arm support 45, upon which stool-arm support rests a disk 46, and on the top of the disk 46 is located the disk 47, which disk is provided with any desired number of apertures 48, which apertures receive the anti friction-balls 49, it being understood that the balls should be somewhat less in diameter than the diameter of the apertures 48.

On the top of the anti friction-balls 49 is located the disk 50,0n which disk rests the stoolarm 51, said stool-arm being provided with the downward-extending spindle 52, which is seated in the stool-arm support 45. The stoolarm 51 extends outward any desired distance and then upward, and to the upper end of the stool-arm is adj ustably connected the stoolsupporting stem 53, which stool-supporting stem is provided at its top or upper end with the head 54,which head is seated in the grooved or guide plate 55, which guide-plate is socurely connected to the bottom or under side of the stool 56. For the purpose of holding the stool-spindle 53 in fixed vertical adjustment said spindle is provided with a series of grooves 57, which grooves are for the purpose of receiving the catch-pin 58, which catch-pin is normally held in the grooves by means of the spring 59. The groove guide-plate 55 is formed of a length to correspond, substantially,with the diameter of the stool 56, so that the stool can be moved to or from the chair I proper.

It will be understood that by my peculiar arrangement I am enabled to provide a barbers chair having a stool so located and adjusted that it can be moved to bring the operator into proper position to shave a person occupying the chair, and at the same time the chair can be rotated horizontally independent of the stool or the stool moved horizontally back and forth or around one side of the chair, and by providing horizontal rotation of the stool and also horizontal rotation of the chair proper two independent movementsare provided, thereby allowing complete control by the operator while sitting upon the stool. For the purpose of providing a means for supplying water a hose, such as 60, may be attached to an ordinary spigot properly located with reference to the chair and the hose extended and connected to a spigot 61, fixed to the drawer 29, and for the purpose of remov-' eeaeea with reference to the hose; but any convenient connection may be employed without departing from the nature of the invention.

For the purpose of providing a means for automatically moving the sliding bar 38 to pass it into engagement with the proper aperture and lock the chair against rotation the spring 63 is provided, one end of which is fixed to the socket 35 and the other end fixed to the bar 64, which bar is an extension of the sliding bar 38 and is extended into the socket and in which socket the rod 64: moves back and forth.

It will be understood that when the pullbar 40 is moved so as to disengage the hook 41 from the lug 42 it is free to be turned out of the way of said lug and pass the same as it is pulled by means of the spring 63.

For the purpose of giving the chair a neat appearance the space between the drawersupporting frame and the chair-seat frame is filled with wood or other suitable material and is held in fixed position by suitable clamping-bolts passed through the material and the frame supporting the drawers.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a barbers chair the combination of a base, a seat-frame rotatably mounted upon the base, arm-supports secured to the seatframe, a rock-bar journaled to the frame and provided with an arm, a notched sliding bar, a fixed bar carrying the sliding bar and a rod 18 adapted to engage one of the notches of the sliding bar, links pivoted at one end to the back of the chair above the pivotal point of the chair-back and at the other to the sliding bar, and a back carried by the seat-frame and pivoted to said arm-supports, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. In a barbers chair the combination of a base,aseat-supportingframerotatably mounted thereon and provided with a socket journaled upon a fixed spindle, said fixed spindle provided with apertures,a sliding pin adapted to engage with the apertures in the spindle, a link connected to the sliding pin and havin g connected thereto a pull-bar provided with a hook, a lug to engage the hook, a bar extended from the sliding pin and one end thereof connected in a guide-socket, and a spring connected to said rod and the chair-frame socket, the fixed spindle and the guide-socket, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

In a barbers chair, the combination of a base having rotatably connected thereto a seat-frame provided with arm-s11 pports, a pivoted back, a stool-arm pivoted to the chairbase, and provided at its upper end with an adjustable stool-supporting stem having a head, a stool supported by the stem, and provided with a grooved plate adapted to receive the head of stool-stem, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

4:. In a chair of the class described, a base provided with a stool-arm support, a stoolarm carrying a stool pivotally connected to said support, a chair rotatably mounted upon the base provided with the stool-arm support, and means for locking the chair against rotation, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

5. The combination of a base provided with a stool-arm support, a disk located upon the stool-arm support and a perforated disk having located in the perforations antifrictionballs, a disk located upon the upper sides of the antifriction-balls, a stool-arm carrying a stool pivotally connected to the support, and a chair rotatably mounted upon the base carrying the stool-arm and the stool, substan-' tially as and for the purpose specified.

6. In a barbers chair, the combination of a base, a rotatable chair mounted thereon, drawers located below the seat of the chair, and one or more of said drawers provided With a spigot, a flexible feed-hose connected to the spigot, and a return-hose communicating with the drawer or drawers provided with a spigot, and a cover or covers hinged to the drawer or drawers, all arranged, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
