Be it known that IVA'. JUsBERG, of Galva, in the county ei Henry, and Stateof 1lliuoishavo invented new and useful improvements in Pu1nps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being'- had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

Second. In so connecting two or more pump-cylinders, both of which 'are provided with valves and communicating passages, according to the first part of the invention, that only one supply and only one "discharge pipe are required. I
Third. In forming at each end of the pumpcylinder, a. chamber or boxsimilarly so partitioned that the Water will be divided and carried, or allowed to pass, to both ends of the cylinder, if only one is used, and similarly to the other cylinders if two or more are connected.
Fourth. In the combination of' side cylinders to the plunger-cylinder or cylinders of the pump, theone for the passage of water to the pump-cylinders, and the other for the discharge of the water therefrom.
In addition to the above, I have also made other improvements in the detail construction of the punip in" its various working parts, that for the successful and eiiicicnt operation of the pump are most important, as willbe obvious from'the description to be 4hereinafter given. 1
A A, inthe drawings, represent two cylinders or` barrels, of similar shape and size. These cylinders .A are placed the one alongside of the other, and by'meansof continuous head-plates B B2 are closed at their upper and lower ends respectively; the headplates being .held together by means of suitable tie-rods or bolts C, extending from one to the other, with nuts screwcdtherein. -Thejoints between the head-plates and cylin ders are sealed with a packing,D, of any suitable kind applied thereto. At each end of the cylinder A, outside of their-head-plates B 152,0. chamber, E, is formed, by mcansof a plate, F, applied thereto, that is hollowed or cut out upon its face toward the cylinderdleads. H H2, openings in the lower head-plate B2,to cylinders-A, two to each cylinder, The openings H communicate into the chamber G, and the openings H2 with the chamber -G2, each opening being provided with a valve, I, that in the openings I-I are arranged to open into/the pumpcylindcrs, and in thel openings H2 to open into the chamber G2. J J2, openings in the .upper headplate' B to cylinders A, two to each cylinder. The openings J communicate with the chamber G3, and the openings J2 with the chamber G, cach opening being provided with valve K, that in the-openings J are arranged to open into the pump-cylinders A, and in theopenings J2 to open into the chamber G4., L, 'the supply pipe to the-pumpi cylinders. This pipe communicates with the chamber G2, at the lower end of the pump-cylinders. M, the discharge pipe for the water from the cylinders A. This pipe communicates with the chamber Gr4 at the upper end of the cylinders A. N N2, two cylinders or chambers, interposed between the cylinders A, which chambers, at thcir'upper and lower ends, are closed by the head-plates B B2, in common with the cylinders A. The cylinder N, at its lower end, communicates through an opening, 0, with the chamber G?, and at its upper end through an4 opening, O2, with the chamber- G. The cylinder Nzcommunicates at its lower end through hole O3 with the chamber G, and at its upper end, through hole O4 with thc chamber G3. P, the plunger or pistonheads for the cylinders A, one to each cylinder, wherein they are suitably packed, to move air and water-tight. 0, the rods to the plungers P, from which they pass out through the head-plate B, and are hung by their upper ends to pitman-rods R2, that by boxes are hung to the cranks S of the horizontal shaft U. This shaft U turns in bearings V of upright frames-W, and with its gear-wheel X engages the gear-wheel Y of the driving or operating-shaft Z.
Having thus described in detail the construction and arrangement of the several parts, I will now explain their operation or connection with each other.l n i As the driving-shaft turns, the two pistons P are made to move up and down within the cylinders A, the one afte'r the other, when, as the one descendsn and the other ascends, the water before them in each case is forced out ofthe cylinders in the first instance, through the valve I, opening outward from such Acylinder into the chamber G, and from thence up through the cylinder NZ into the upper chamber G3, and thence down into the same cylinder upon the other side of the piston or plunger thereto, and in the other instance, up through the valves K of such cylinder opening outward and into the chamber G, and from thence into the discharge pipe M. The pistons having thus completed their stroke in the one direction in each ease within the cylinder, by continuing to turn the driving-shaft, the plunger, which in thetirst instance moved downward, now moves upward, and the reverse with the other plunger, the water in the first lease, above the piston, passing out of the cylinder into the discharge pipe, through the upper valves K, opening into the chamber G,`at the same time drawing in water from below, through the valves I, suitably opening therefor, while, in the `other case, the water below the piston is being forced through the valve below into the chamber G, and from thence up through the cylinder N2 into the chamber G3, and through the valve K, in the same cylinder, down into the same above the piston or plunger. l
From the above description it is plain to be seen that a continuous stream of water is of necessity discharged from the discharge pipe to the pump. To make the piston-rods water-tight in their movement through the heads to the cylinders A, I construct a box packing, A2, around the same, whereby the water is prevented from working through the same, as the pistons move up and down.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The arrangement-of the pump-cylinder A, cylinders N N2, chambers G G'z G5 G-, valves I K, plates B B2, and F, land forming chambers Efall operating as described for the purpose specified.
