UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN T. W. RUDESILL, OF EAST ST. LOUIS, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO DAMASOUS BRAKE BEAM COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A
CORPORATION.
FINGER-GUARD CLIP FOR BRAKE-BEAMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 699,929, dated May 13, 1902. Application filed October 21, 1901! Serial No. 79,389. (No model.) i
To all whom it mag concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN T. W. RUDESILL, a citizen of the United States, residing in East St. Louis, in the county of St. Clair and State of Illinois, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in'Finger-Guard Clips for Brake-Beams, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a finger-guard clip for use upon brake-beams in holding the finger guards thereto in proximity to the brake-heads, the clip being of such construc-' tion that it may be readily applied to the brake-beam or disconnected therefrom.
The invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a perspective View of a brakebeam equipped with my clips. Fig. II is an enlarged detail top view of one end of the brake-beam with the clip applied thereto. Fig. III is a cross-sectional view taken on line 111 III, Fig. II. p
1 designates a brake-beam, shown of I form and having brake-heads 2 attached thereto.
3 designates afinger-guard,which it is common to attach to brakebeams in a position beside the brake-heads tolimit the endwise movement of the brake-beams while hanging suspended beneath a car. The clip by which said finger-guard is'attached to the brakebeam comprises a body 4, having a tubular boss 5, in which the head end of the fingerguard is seated and held to the face of the brake-beam 1. f
6 is a rearwardly-extending arm th'at extends from the body 4 over the top edge of the upper flange of the brake-beam, then downwardly, and ontothe uppersurface of the central portion of the brake-beam, so as to lie flat upon said central portion. The arm 6 is apertured to receive an eyebolt 7, to which the suspension-chain of the brakebeam is attached, and said eyebolt passes through said arm and the central portion of the brake-beam to hold the clip firmly in position on the brake-beam. At the lower edge of the body 4 is a lip 8, that'extends rearwardly beneath the lower flange of the brakebeam and serves to hold the clip at its lower edgeto the brake-beam and at the same time strengthen the clip and its connection to the brake-beam.
The clips are readily applied to the brake beam by slipping themthereonto before the insertion of the eyebolts 7, and when said eyebolts have been lIlSOl'liOdfthB clips are socure] y held from escape. When it is desired to remove the clips for any reason, the eye bolts are first removed, and the clips can then be readily disconnected from the brake-beam by slippingorswinging them off of the beam, as will'readily appear, there being sufficient spring in the clip (which is preferably of malleable iron) to allow the lip 8 to pass from beneath the lower fiange'of the beam.
By having the head of the fipger-guard 3 I guard fitting in a socket formed in the clip and thelinnerend of which-bears against the beam, substantially as set forth.
2. A brake-beam havingaflange and aweb, a clipfitting'against the face of the flange and having'an-armpassing over the upper edge of the-flange and seated upon said web, and having-a clip'fitting beneath the lower edge of -thefiange,-- an eyebolt connecting the arms offthe'"cl ip 'to, the webof the beam,,and a with a head that bears against thefaceof the flange of the beam, substantiallyjasset forth.
JOHN T. 'W. RUDESILL. In presence of- WM. RODENBERGER, L. G. SMITH.
