TATTOOING INSTRUMENT.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN FOULTZ, a citizen of the United States, residingat Rea, in the county of Andrew and Stateof Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tattooing Instruments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it apper tains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in that class of tattooing instruments which are designed forthe marking of live stock, such as bovines and other animals; and the objects of my improvements are, first, to provide an instrument bythe use of which any desired character or characters-sucl1 as record-nu mber, index-nu mber, individual nu rnber ormark, &'c.may be pricked into the ,nose of an animal with ease and facility; second, to so arrange the parts of a tattooing instrument that it maybeused in marking variously sized and proportioned noses of animals; third, to, so construct a tattooing instrument that it will be cheap in cost of manufacture and very durable, I attain these objects by the mechanisinillnstrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a perspectiveview of a part of my invention, certainother parts seen in Fig. 2 being removed to avoid obscurity. In the construction of my invention the two suitably-shaped jaws 1 (see Fig. 1) are preferably telescoped upon limbs 2 and secured thereon by set-screws 3, as seen in Fig. 1, or said jaws 1 may be formed integral with limbs 2. Limbs 2 are pivotally attached together by stud 4, perforated at 5 for the receptionof bolt 6, (see Fig. 2,) arranged to pass through perforation'7 in limb Sand perforation 5 in stud 4 for the pivotal attachment of limb S to stud 4, in which stud 4 passes upward through mortise 9 (see Fig. 2) in limb 8. Limb S carries character-holder 10, which carries characters 11, secured therein by their suitable mortise telescoping upon plate 12. (See Fig. 4.) Characters 11 have their face or under side'suitably studded with prick-points or tattooing-needles 11 as seen in'Figs. 3 and 4. The two limbs 2 are provided with suitable handles 13 and the limb Swith handle 14.

In the operation of my invention the operator grasps handles 13 and holds themhorizontally, separating jaws 1 in the same manner as an ordinary pair of tongs. In the meantime handle 14 will gravitate pivotally on bolt- 6, carrying upward'the character-holder and the characters 11 held therein. The operator then inserts one each of the two jaws 1 in each nostril 15 of animal-16, and on pressing handleslS toward each other jaws 1 will close upon and press against both sides of septum 17 of the nose 18 of animal 16, thus securely restraining or holding animal 16, after which handles 13, being close together, may be grasped by one hand of the operator, le'aving'the other hand free,which grasps han-' die 14, which upon being drawnupward pivotally on bolt 6 causes limb 8 to descend, carr'ying tattooing-needles 11? into the nose 18 of animal 16, pricking perforations into nose 18. By movements in reverse to the ones described the instrument is removed from nose 18 of animal 16, after which any tattooing ink ,(not shown) of suitable color is rubbed into-the perforations in nose 18 of animal 16 in the usual tattooing'manner.

It is preferred that the described tattooing should be done on nose 18 in a straight line across said nose close to andjust above nostrils 15, as indicated at 18.

Iam aware that tattooing characterslhprovided with suitably-arranged tattooing-needles 11, have been used for tattooing animals in the ear, and therefore do not claim the tattooing of an animal in the broadest sense; but I am not aware that tattooing of animals upon their noses has been done heretofore or that any instrument other than my invention has been devised for suohwork. Therefore What I claim as new and original, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
