Be it known that I, EDWARD C. SIMPSON, a citizen of the United States,residing at Akron in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing-Press Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to mechanism for sealing together adjacent sheets of newspapers, whereby when opened for reading the papers are so marked or mutilated as to be readily detected should their return to the publisher as unsoldcopies be attempted.
The invention has particular reference to certain improvements on the mechanisms shown in patents to L. L. Carson, No. 626,965, June 13, 1899, and Reissue No. 11,881, January 8, 1901.
One object of the present invention is to so mount the improved mechanism on a press that it may be shifted thereon transversely and caused to operate upon eitheredge of the web or at any desired point inward from either edge thereof.
A further object is to provide improved paste-delivering mechanism and to improve and simplify the construction and operation of the perforating mechanism.
The invention consists in the novel structural features and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, where- Figure 1 is a side elevation of mechanism embodying my improvements. The mechanism may be mounted upon the press at any convenient point between the cylinders and folder and before the webs have been superposed one upon the other. The mechanism is designed to be capable of being so shifted transversely of the press as to operate on the Web at any desired point in the width thereof, whether at one edge or the other or between the edges, according as it may be desired to locate the sealing-point.
Referring more particularly to the present embodiment of my invention, the only portions of a press illustrated in connection there-v with are the two opposite side bars 2 of the press-fram e, to which are secured the opposite frame portions 3 and i, carrying myimproved mechanism. Traversing the press andjournaled in frames 3 and 4 are the parallel shafts 5 and 6 and the supporting-bar 7. Shafts 5 and 6 are united at one end by gears 5 and 6' and meshing with the gear 6 is gear 7 on short shaft 8, which is also journaled in frame 3 and carries gear 9, which is adapted to mesh with a gear or pinion (not shown) carried by a rotating member of the press, whereby rotary motion is imparted to shafts 5 and 6.
Shaft 6 and bar 7 are embraced by a frame, which is adjustable longitudinally thereon and transversely of the press for the purpose of so positioning the paste-applying and perforating mechanisms as to operate on the desired portion of the web. The said frame is here shown formed by two side members 10 and 11, united by bars 12 and constructed with sockets orbearings, through which shaft 6 and bar7extend. The frameis maintained in desired adjustment by set-screws 13,whic11 impinge bar-.7.
Secured on shaft 6 so as to rotate therewith is roll 14:, which is adapted to be adjusted along with said frame, and cooperating with go this roll is the rubber-bound roll 15, adjustable on shaft 5. The peripheries of rolls 14 and 15 are slightly separated, and adapted to pass therethrough is the web 16, which is operated upon. a f j 5 A projection 17 on the periphery ofvroll 14 is adapted to press the web againstthe rubber-bound roll 15 and apply paste to the web.
The shape and area of the pasted portion of the paper is determined by the shape and area I00 of projection 17 The same is here shown triangular with the pasted area of corre 'sponding outlines, as shown in Fig. 9.
Projection 17 may be fixed on roll 14, or it may be carried by a plate 18, removably secured in a depression in the roll periphery, and the latter may be formed also with an oppositelydisposed depression, normally closedtby plate 19 for reversing the position of plate 18 and rati-ngpoints or needles 21, arranged in V form along two sides of the depression 22 in the outer face of head20. This depression permits head 20 to move out around projection 17, and at the same time paste is being applied to the web the points 21 are forced outward through the paper and against the rubber-bound surface of roll 15, and by this means the paper is simultaneously pasted and perforated. Nhen it is desired to reverse the position of projection 17, as above referred to, another head 20, having pins 21 and depression 22 reversely arranged, may be substituted for the head here shown.
Arm 23 is confined and adapted to be reciprocated in guides 24 by wrist 25, projecting therefrom into the cam-groove 26, formed in the face of the non-rotating head 27, secured to frame member 10. This cam-groove is so formed as to hold head 20 retracted excepting when turning up opposite roll 15, when the arm 23 is so reciprocated as to project head 20 and perforate the paper, as above explained.
In the operation of myimproved mechanism it is essential that sl1afts5 and 6 be so geared as to drive the peripheries of rolls 14and'15, which are of corresponding diameter, at exactly the same speed as that at which the web moves through the press, whereby the web will not be torn or mutilated by the contact of the paste-applying and perforating devices therewith. 'As it is necessary to seal each paper at one point only, the peripheral length of roll 14 is proportional to the length of the sheets into which the paper is subsequently cut, whereby for the length of each sheet the web is operated upon once only and all of the subsequently cut sheets are pasted and perforated at corresponding points, preferably adjacent the upper righthand corners thereof. However, if desired, the peripheral length of the roll 14 may be so proportioned to the length of each sheet that the latter will be operated upon at two or more points to provide each paper with several sealing-points. With the rolls 14 and 15 adjustable transversely of the press the sealing-points may be arranged wherever it may be desired to locate them between the longitudinal edges of the web. It will be understood that after web 16 passes from the pasting andperforating mechanism it is superposed upon and adheres to the other web, (not shown,) forming the second sheets of the newspaper.
The preferred mechanism for delivering paste to projection 17, which, however, forms no part of the present invention, consists of a disk 28 on shaft 29 beneath roll '14 and in such position with relation thereto that its periphery applies paste to projection 17 as the latter passes the disk. The lower portion of said disk turns in a paste-receptacle 30, provided with side plates 31 and a vertically-adjustable edge-scraping device 32, for removing excess paste from the disk as it emerges from the paste-font. This font is removably positioned in the depending portions 10 and 11 of frames 10 and 11, being secured by bolts 33. Shaft 29 is journaled on the font and at one end carries the adjustable collar 34, provided with projection 85, which is engaged by pin 36, extending laterally from gear 37. This gear is mounted on a short shaft 38, journaled in frame portion 11 in line with shaft 29, and gear 37 meshes with gear 38 on shaft 6. This mechanism permits of the removal of the paste-font and disk 28 for cleaning, and the connection afforded by projection 35 and pin 36 permits of the shaft 29 being readily removed with the font and as readily replaced and connected up for rotating. 7
The pasting mechanism may be used alone and without the perforating mechanism should it be desired to simply paste the sheets without perforating them. The latter facilitates breaking of the seal, though it may be dispensed with without excessive tearing or mutilation of the paper when being opened, and it will be understood that the invention is not limited to the structural details herein shown and described, as the same may be varied in many particulars and as the application of the improved mechanism to presses of difierent styles may require.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Newspaper-sealing mechanism comprising supports arranged at opposite sides of the path of a web and extending transversely thereof, and sealing mechanism including cooperating devices for the opposite surfaces of the web, said cooperating devices being longitudinally adjustable on said supports, whereby the web may be operated upon at any desired point between its longitudinal edges.
2. Newspaper-sealing mechanism comprising supports arranged at opposite sides of the path of the web and extending transversely thereof, and sealing mechanism including cooperating rotating devices for the opposite surfaces of the Web, said cooperating rotating devices being longitudinally adjustable on said supports, whereby the web may be operated upon at any desired point between its longitudinal edges.
3. Newspaper-sealing mechanism comprising rotatable shafts arranged at opposite sides of the path of the web and extending transversely thereof, and sealing mechanism including cooperating rotating devices at opposite sides of the web and adjustable longitudinally of the shafts and actuated thereby, whereby the web may be operated upon at any desired point between the longitudinal edges thereof.
4.. The combination of a press-frame, two rotatable shafts extending transversely across the frame at opposite sides of the path of the web, a transverse support in the frame paralleling the shafts, and sealing mechanism including cooperating rotating devices adjustable longitudinally of the shafts and support, the said rotating devices being mounted on and actuated by the shafts, whereby the web may be operated upon at any desired point between the longitudinal edges thereof.
5. The combination of a press-frame, two rotatable shafts extending transversely across the frame on opposite sides of the path of the web, the fixed guide extending transversely across the frame and paralleling said shafts, a frame adjustable longitudinally on said guide and on one of said shafts and adapted to be fixed to the said guide,.sealing mechanism consisting in part of a roll within said frame and mounted on the frame-supporting shaft and adjustable longitudinally with the frame, a second roll adjustable on the other shaft and adapted to cooperate with the firstmentioned roll, and paste-deliverin g mechanism carried by the said longitudinally-adjustable frame, substantially as shown and described.
6. Newspaper-sealing mechanism embodying a rotating device formed with a peripheral opening, a paste-delivering device carried by the rotating device adjacent said opening, an isolating or severing device carried by the rotating device and operative through the peripheral opening thereof, and a cooperating surface at the opposite side of the path of the web for said rotating device, substantially as shown and described.
7. Newspaper-sealing mechanism embodying a rotating device formed with a peripheral opening, a paste-delivering device carried by the rotating device and overhanging the peripheral opening thereof, an isolating or severing head operative through said peripheral opening and adapted to embrace the pastedelivering device, actuating means for the head, and a cooperating surface at the opposite side of the web for said rotating device, substantially as shown and described.
8. Newspaper-sealing mechanism embodying two codperating rolls, means for driving said rolls at a peripheral speed equal to the speed of the Web passing therebetween, a paste-delivering projection on the periphery of one of said rolls, a reciprocating head carried by said roll and having a top depression adapted to embrace the projection when the head is extended, and perforating-points carried by and projectingupwardly from the head, substantially as shown and described.
9. The combination of roll 14 formed with a peripheral opening, a perforating-head adapted to reciprocate through the opening, and the paste-applying block adapted to be positioned at either side of the opening, substantially as shown and described.
10. The combination of roll 14 formed with a peripheral opening and with peripheral depressions on opposite sides of the opening, and the paste-delivering block adapted to overhang the opening and projecting from a plate, said plate being adapted to be secured in either of the said roll depressions, substantially as shown and described.
11. Newspaper sealing mechanism comprising a rotating device formed with a pcripheral opening, a paste applying device adapted to be positioned at opposite sides of the opening, isolating or severing means operative through the opening, and a cooperating surface at the opposite side of the web for said rotating device.
