BARRELwCOVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 699,805, dated May 13, 1902. Application iled March 17, 1902. Serial No. 98,5116. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH F. MORIN, of Lawrence, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Covers, which the following is a specification.
This invention has forits object to provide a sample-holding barrel-cover comprising a tray covered by a pane of glass or other transparent material, the bottom of the tray being adjustable toward and from the pane of glass, so as to permit the depth of the tray and of the accumulation of goods therein to be varied.
The invention consists in the improvements which l will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a transverse sectional View of a barrel-cover embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective sectional view showing a portion of the same.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in both the figures.
My improved barrel-cover comprises an annular rest 2 of tapering or frusto-conical form adapted to bear upon the upper end of a barrel 3. To the outer edge of the rest 2 is aiixed a downwardly-projecting cylindrical rim portion 4, adapted to surround the mouth of the barrel and, if desired, to be connected with the body of the barrel by a hinge 5.
6 represents a cylindrical bottomless body portion affixed to the inner edge of the rim portion 2 and projecting downwardly therefrom, the portion 6 being separated from the portion it by an annular space, which surrounds the sample-containing portion of the cover and receives the upper end of the barrel. rllhe upper end of the body portion 6 is provided with suitable means, such as a roll or bead 7 and an adjustable flange 8, for conining the margin of a circular pane 9 of glass or other suitable transparent material.
10 represents an independent bottom piece, which is formed to lit and to be adjusted vertically in the cylindrical body portion 6, so that it may stand at any desired distance from the covering-pane 9, suitable means being employed for securing the bottom 10 to the body 6 in any position to which said bottom may be adj usted. I have here shown the bottom piece 10 provided at its margin with a downwardly-projecting flange 12, which has a close sliding iit'on the interior of the body 6 and is`provided with vertical slots 13.
14 represents bolts, which have heads bearing on the inner surface of the flange, the bolts passing through the slots 13 and through corresponding orifices in the body portion 6 and having nuts 15, whereby the bolts maybe tightened and loosened. The ilange 13 stiff.- ens and prevents the bending or buckling of the independent bottom piece 10.
It will be seen that the adjustable bottom piece enables the thickness of the sample layer held by the cover to be varied according to the nature of the goods, so that the user of the cover is not obliged to keep more of the goods in use as a sample than is necessary in each case.
I claimn 1. A sample-holding barrel-cover comprising an annular rest portion formed to bear on the upper end of a barrel, a rim portion projecting downwardly from the outer margin of said rest and formed to surround the upper end of the barrel, a cylindrical bottomless body portion projecting downwardly from the inner margin of the rest, and provided at its upper end with means for holding a circular transparent pane, an independent bottom piece having a marginal flange in frictional sliding contact with the body, and means for adjustably securing` the flange to the body, whereby the bottom piece maybe secured at different distances from the transparent pane.
2. A sample-holding barrel-cover comprising an annular rest portion formed to bear on the upper end of abarrel, a rim portion proj ecting downwardly from the outer margin of said rest and formed to surround the upper end of the barrel, a cylindrical bottomless body portion projecting downwardly from the inner margin of the rest, and provided at its upper end with means for holding a circular transparent pane, an independent bottom piece surrounded by the lower portion of said Y body and vertically adjustable therein, said bottom piece having a downwardly-projecting marginal flange in sliding Contact With the interior of the body, said ange having Vertical slots, and clamping-bolts engaged with the body and passing throughisaid slots.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
JOSEPH F. MORIN.
