As soon as the mass of articles has thus been transferred from the trough to the box the plunger 20 moves back to a position to receive another mass of articles in front of it and the box X is removed and another is put in its place and the articles deposited therein in like manner, or if the box or bag is of sufficient size a second layer of articles is deposited in it in contact with the first.
As shown, the packer E and plunger are double-endedthat is, at each end the sides are flexible and converge, so that they may 'be spread outward as the articles pass between them, and at each end there is a hinged cap 31, and,if desired, in order to adapt the in achine to packages of different sizes the trough may be made in two sect-ions, the bottom portion of one section overlapping the other, as indicated in Fig. 5, with a binding-screw 35, whereby the parts may be secured after adjustment. As shown, there are two packers, one at each side of the receiver D, and each of the packers is double-ended, so that four attendants may operate in connection with a single shaker and single receiver. By this means the bags or boxes may be filled with great rapidity. In view of these rapid operations the attendants cannot give any attention to the disposal of the boxes after they are filled, and I therefore provide conveyers Fin the form of continuous straps passing around rollers 39 and extending below the ends of the packers, so that the attendants as soon as a box or bag receives its contents can draw the box from the end of the packer and place it without further manipulation directly upon the conveyer, bymeans of which it is conveyed to one end of the machine, where it is taken 0E, and the box is closed or the bagis folded down upon the articles within the same.
It will be evident that any suitable form of conveyer other than that shown may be employed and also that the parts above described may be constructed in different ways without departing from the main features of my invention. It will also be seen that any suitable means may be employed for vibrating the shaker and for reciprocating the plunger. As shown, there is a double plunger in each packer, and this is connected bya link. 40 to a vibrating arm 41, to which motion is imparted from a suitable eccentric 42 by means of a rod 43, and the shaker is vibrated from a rotating crank-wheel 45, to which rotation is imparted by means of a belt 46, driven from a shaft carrying the eccentric 42.
WVithout limiting myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts shown, I claim 1. The shaker provided with the receivingplatform, and with partitions extending beyond the platform capable of limited longitudinal play independently of the movements of the platform, substantially as set forth.
2. The shaker provided with the receivingplatform, and with partitions extending be yond the platform, the alternate partitions capable of limited longitudinal play independently of the movement of the platform, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of the reciprocating platform having partitions and dischargeopenings between the partitions, transverse blades in front and rear of said openings, and a channeled receiver into the channels of which the rear blades project, substantially as set forth.
4. The reciprocating platform with discharge-openings and blades extending downward in front and at the rear of said openings, combined with a receiver having channels into which the rear blades project, sub stantially as set forth.
5. The combination in a packing-machine, of a reciprocating plunger and atrough for receiving the articles to be packed adapted at the end to enter the packing box or receptacle and provided at said end with yielding sides, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination of the reciprocating plunger and a trough having yielding sides and a yielding cap, substantially as set forth.
7. The trough having a rigid bottom, sides adapted to yield near the end of the trough for the passage of articles between them, a cap pivoted between the sides, and a plunger reciprocating in the trough, substantially as set forth.
8. The combination in a packing-machine, of a trough having yielding side portions at each end and a double-ended plunger, and means for reciprocating itin the trough, substantially as set forth.
9. The combination with a reciprocating plunger, of a trough adapted at the end to enter the packing box or receptacle and its sides having the terminal portions pivoted to swing laterally, and springs for carrying the pivoted portions inward, substantially as set forth.
10. The combination with a reciprocating plunger, of a trough, sides having the terminal portions pivoted to swing laterally,springs for carrying the pivoted portions inward, and a cap pivoted between the sides, substantially as set forth.
