VALVE-OPERATING MECHANISM FOR WASHBASINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 699,704, dated May 13, 1902.
Application filed November 9, 1901. Serial No. 81,738. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR B. PARSONS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moorhead, in the county of Monona and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve-Operating Mechanism for W ashbasins; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in valve-operating mechanism for washbasins, but more particularly to a valve for opening and closing the discharge-orifice thereof.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an improved valve adapted to be operated so as to permit of the discharge of the contents .of the basin through a suitable lever arranged adjacent thereto.
Further objects, as well as the novel details or construction, will be described hereinafter, defined in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through a basin and its support, the valve-operating mechanism being shown in side elevation; and Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the valve and its operating mech anism detached.
The reference-numeral 1 designates a stand or support provided with a suitable opening 2 and arranged beneath which is a bowl or basin 3 of the ordinary construction. This basin is provided with the usual overflow 4, having a by-path 5, which communicates with the waste-pipe through the neck 6. In the bottom of the basin is provided a dischargeopening 7 which also enters into the neck 6 and is provided with a valve-seat S,upon which is seated a valve 9, connected to a valve-stem 10, supported above the basin;
At a suitable point on the support 1 is a plate 11, at the forward end of which are two upwardly-projecting cars or lugs 12 and 13,
while the rear end of the plate 11 is provided with an upturned flange, forming a lip 14, referred to hereinafter. Pivotally secured to this plate is the actuating-lever 15, which is connected to the valve-rod through the medium of an intermediate eye 16, formed therein, said lever being preferably constructed of a single piece of'wire bent to form the eye, which is passed around a pivot 17 journaled in the ears or lugs 13 and 14, above referred to. After passing around the pivot the wire is carried rearwardly and upwardly and bent into a coil 18 to form a suitable handle where by the same may be grasped to actuate the valve-rod. When it is desired to retain the Valve in its closed position, as shown in Fig. 1, the lever will rest upon the upturned flange or lip of the plate 11, whereby it may be supported. tVhemhowever, itis desired to empty the. basin, the lever is thrown forward on its pivot, as shown in Fig. 1 in dotted lines, thus forcing the valve from its seat and permitting the contents of the bowl or basin to pass out through the waste-pipe. Inasmuch as the plate 11 is removable, the device may be readily applied to a bowl or basin of the usual construction without altering the form thereof in any particular. It would be an easy matter to apply the valve by merely unscrewing it from its stem and after inserting the stem through the opening 7 affixing the Valve thereto.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a cheap, durable, and efficient means for ac-' complishing the purposes for which the de vice is intended and one which may be readily applied to any basin of standard construction.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination with a basin provided with an outlet-orifice of a valve seated therein; a valve-stem projecting from said-valve; aremovable plate provided with an upturned lip at one end; a lever fulcrumed at the other end of the plate and adapted to rest on the lip; an eye formed intermediate the lever and adapted to engage the stem of the valve whereby the same may be actuated to close or open the outlet-orifice.-
2. Astopper meohanismforbasins comprisand a valve on the other end of said valveing a. plate having upwardly-projecting lugs stem. 10
'01- ears on one end; a, lever fulcrumed to said I In testimony whereof I affix my signature to engage the fulcrum; thence bent to form ears consisting of a single piece of Wire bent I in presence of two witnesses.
