MATCH BOX HOLDER.
( Application filed May 14, 1901.)
(No Model.)
WITNESSES. VENTOI? .1 7L. z a ATTORNEY-5..
UNTTE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALPHONSO I-I. DOTY, OF OVATONNA, MINNESOTA.
MATCH-BOX HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 699,666, dated May 13, 1902.
, Application filed May 14, 1901.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I,.ALPHONSO II. DOTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Owatonna, in the county of Steele and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in MatclrBox Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, andto the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in holders for match-boxes; and among its ob; jects is to provide a'holder in which a box of matches can be placed conveniently for use without danger of dropping any of the matches, also to provide a construction which will allow the matches to be grasped readily by the fingers and removed as needed in use,- and also to provide an improved means of attaching sandpaper or other abrasive material to the side of the box in convenient position to be used for igniting the match.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved match-box holder with a box of matches in position there in. Fig. 2 is a plan of the blank which is folded to form a holder, and Fig. 3 is a crosssection of the holder.
The holder is preferably formed of thin sheet metal, and the back thereof is represented at 3, having perforations atfor the tacks by which it may be attached to the wall or other support in vertical position. The sides of the holder are indicated at 5 and are turned up or forwardly at substantially a right angle to the back. 'These sideshave extensions 6 bent inwardly at substantially a right angle, forming the front of the holder, which is thus made substantially oblong in form and rectangular in cross-section. Theparts 6, forming the front, do not meet, but have a space 9, through which the matches in the box may be grasped. The sides 5 are provided at their lower ends with extensions 7, which are bent may be readily Serial No. 60,223. We model.)
inwardly to form the bottom of the holder. These extensions do not meet, a space being thereby formed to permit an empty box to be conveniently lifted and removed.
Near each end of the sides 5 are teeth 8, struck up from the metal and adapted to turn down to fasten to the sides of the holder strips of sand or emery paper or emery-cloth 10 on which the matches may be ignited. It will be seen that by prying up the teeth the paper or cloth may be removed and renewed when necessary.
In use the holder is fastened to the wall and the ordinary pasteboard box of matches, including the sliding cover, is inserted into the holder. The cover of the box is then with drawn, leaving the rest of the box in the holder, with the matches therein exposed at the front, as indicated in Fig. 1. The upper end of the pasteboard box is then broken away, permitting the matches to be readily removed. It Will be seen that when the box is empty it removed from the holder and quickly replaced by a new one, particularly because the matches do not have to be removed from the box before being inserted in the holder;
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and'desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A match-box holder adapted to receive a sliding-cover mateh box, comprisinga casing having an opening at'the top throughwhich the match-box maybe inserted in the holder, a back extending above and below the sides and adapted to be attached to a wall or other support, sides projecting from the back, a front havinga central vertical opening adapted'to permit the removal of matches from the box, and a bottom having a central transverse opening extending to the back.
In testimony whereof I alfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALPHONSO I'I. D OTY.
