JOHNJ. BOVVES, JR, OF PENSACOLA, FLORIDA.
HOSE-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 699,366, dated May 6, 1902.
Application filed November 9, 1901- Serial No. 81,727. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. BowEs, J12, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pensacola, in the count-y of Escambia and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hose-couplings, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which is readily coupled and uncoupled and automatically locked in its coupled position, is water-tight, and is cheap, durable, and efficient.
The invention has further objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the same is fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
The invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a device constructed in accordance with my improved coupling. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the female section of the coupling. Fig. 1 is a similar view of the male section of the coupling. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the male section of the coupling, the locking-ring being removed. Fig. 6 is an end View of the locking-ring. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the locking-ring.
l designates the female section of the coupling, having an enlarged head 2, provided at diametrically opposite points with inwardlyprojecting quadrantal flanges 3 and in its edges intermediate said flanges with recesses 4, and at a suitable distance in the rear of said flanges to permit of the insertion of thelugs 6 behind the flanges 3 is an annular flange 4, forming a pocket between itself and the shoulder a the purposes of which will be hereinafter fully explained.
5 designates the male section of the coupling, provided on its exterior with segmental lugs 6, which when said section is inserted in the head 2 by a slight twisting of either section is adapted to engage behind the flanges 3, and thus secure the sections against 1ongitudinal displacement, and are preferably a little less than a quadrant to permit of their ready insertion between the flangesSinto the head 2. The male section is provided with an annular shoulder 7, upon-which is slidably secured a locking-ring 8, having forward extensions 9 engaging in the recesses 4:, securing the sections against rotary motion, therebylockingthem in position. The shoulder 7 is recessed, providing seats 10 for the reception of springs 11, and the ringS is provided with inwardly-projecting screws 12 or any other suitable means which extend into the seats 10, permitting the ring 8 to have a limited longitudinal movement on the shoulder 7, and said screws 12 are secured to the springs 11 in such a manner that the springs will normally keep the ring projected and when any pressure is brought to bear upon theextensions 9 permit it to recedeas, for
instance, when the extensions 9 are brought in contact with the flanges 3 in coupling the two sections the ring will recede, permitting the lugs 6 to be inserted in the head 2 behind the flanges 3, and immediately upon the extensions'9 registering with the recesses 4 the ring will be moved forward by the force of the springs forcing the extensions 9 into the recesses 4, thereby locking the sections in their coupled position.
13 designates an annular channeled washer approximately U -shaped in cross section,
having the lips 14 thereof tapered. The washer is to be carried Within the head 2 in the pocket formed by the annular flange 4, and when the sections are coupled together, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the lips ll spread, closing the space between the inner Walls of the head 2 and the outer surface of the section 5. It will be perceived from the above construction of a washer that the water'will in passing through the coupling force the lips 14 against the two sections and that the washer is held against displacement by the flange l and which retains the washer within the head 2 ready to receive the male section of the coupler.
It is obvious from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that I provide a hose-coupling which is automatically locked and is nonleakable. 7
Having described my invention, what I claim isl. A coupling, comprising a femalesection having an enlarged head, provided with recesses and inwardly-projecting flanges,- a male section provided with lugs and a shoulder having sockets, a locking-ring slidably mounted on said shoulder and having extensions to engage said recesses, springs in said sockets to hold said ring normally projected, and a U-shaped'washer carried in said head. 2. A coupling, comprising a female section having an enlarged annular head provided with segmental flanges and recesses, a male section provided with segmental lugs and a shoulder having sockets, a locking-ring having forwardly-extending lugs to engage said recesses, springs interposed in said sockets to keep said ring normally projected, and an annular U -shaped Washer carried in said head, and the flanges of which rest against the inner wall of the head and the outer surface of the male section.
3. Acoupling, comprising a female section,
' and intermediate said flanges with recesses, a
pocket Within said head, a male section provided with segmental lugs, and an annular shoulder having sockets, a locking-ring having forwardly-extending lugs to engage said recesses and slidably mounted upon said shoulder, lugs upon said ring extending into said sockets, permitting the ring to have a limited longitudinal movement on said shoulder, springs in said sockets and secured to said lugs keeping the ring normally projected, and an annular U-shaped washer carried in said pocket, and the flanges of which rest against the inner wall. of the head and the outer surface of the male section.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
