TO ALL WHOM IT GONCERN:
Bc it known that I, I?. PIKE, of Stowe, Lamolle county, State of Vermont, have invented an Improved fateli-Wheel and Gates Combined; and I do hereby declare the following to be an exact description of the sa'me, reference being had'to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making l a part of. this specieatiomdn which- Eigurel represents a side elevation of the wheel.
Figure '2, a. tcp view.
The nature of my invention is a cylindrical water-wheel with a centre partition, having two apertures and two adjustable gates regulated by a lever. The Water-wheel is intended to operate in a concave box in which the wheel operates. V
A' represents the cylindrical wheel, which is a reacting wheel designed to run in a case or box. The water surrounds the cylinder or wheel, and the ends are open for the final discharge of the water both at the top and bottom of the Wheel. Thewater enters into the wheel, and propels the wheel asit enters through the gates B, `the openings of the gdtes being regulated by the vlever C. Ifth'efwater Apropels a wheel by issuing out of it, either the wheel must be very large'in proportion to the issues or much of the power is lost, there'being too great motion ofthe water before acting upon the wheel. This wheel is propelled by the reaction upon the gates', the water after itsaction upon the gates escaping at each end of the wheel. The gate-beam or lever C has a. double-jointed rod,'D, attached to' the under side of th'e beam and to the outside case, ns a bearing or fulerum. E is a centre partition, with an opening, G, at each side. The spindle H passes through the centre of the'cylinder A. A tube, J, its on the spindle H, and at the top of this tube is a collar, K, thatrevolves, and to which thebe'a-m C is'attached for the purpose of raisingand lowering the tube J. At the lowei end of the tubeJ is a 'connecting-rod. L, one on each side of the tube', and pivoted to the tube, and attached by hinge or pivot tofthe gates B, so that by raising or lowering the beam C the gates are opened or closed.
What Iclaim as vmy invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Y The cylindrical water-wheel A with its centre partition E having two apertures GG, and two adjustable gates BB regulated by the lever C, when constructed, combined, and operating as herein described and for the purpose s et forth; i
