FURNACE-CHARGING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 698,768, dated April 29, 1902.

To all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. TALES, of Munhall, Allegheny county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Furnace- Charging Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is a sectional side elevation, with the parts broken away, showing furnacecharging apparatus provided with my improved grip-bar. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation,partly broken away,of the grip-bar. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same, and
Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line IV IV of Fig. 2.
My invention relates to the charging of furnaces and is designed to prevent the rapid destruction from heat of the grip-bar by which the billet, bloom, or charging box is carried into or out of the furnace-chamber. Heretofore in the use of such apparatus the gripbars must be replaced at frequent intervals, as they soon warp, crack, and deteriorate under the heat to which they are subjected. My invention greatly lengthens the life of these bars; and it consists in providing them with open-top cavities or pockets which are supplied with water or other cooling fluid.
It also consists in a construction of the bar as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, 2 represents part of the frame of the chargingmachine, supported from lever 3.
4 is the grip-bar, pivoted at 5 and having a tail portion 6, pivoted to connecting-link '7. The rear portion of this bar is cored out for lightness, as shown at 8 in Figs. 2 and 3, while its front portion is cast or otherwise formed with a series of pockets 9, having separatingpartitions 10 extending transversely between them. -Upper slots or holes 11 lead through the top of the bar into the pockets, the water or other cooling fluid being supplied through these slots by means of a supply-pipe 12 or other means when the bar is outside the furnace.
13 is the movable gripper, which is supported upon guides 14, extending along the grip-bar, 15 being an electric motor upon the charging-machine acting through gearing 16 upon screw mechanism 17 to bind or release the billet-box or other element to be inserted or removed.
In using the apparatus the metal or box is gripped in the usual manner, the movements of the machine being those ordinarily employed. The pockets are kept supplied with water by feeding fluid into them when the peel or bar is outside the furnace.
The advantages of my invention result from the long life of the bars, owing to the water cooling and from the simplicity of the cooling means. On account of the difierent movements of the grip-bar it would be Very difficult to cool it by means of fluid supply and exhaust pipes leading to cavities in the bar.
Many changes may be made in the form and arrangement of the charging-machine, the bar, and the means for supplying fluid without departing from my invention.
I claim 1. In charging apparatus, a grip-bar having a cavity with a closed bottom and arranged to contain apool of cooling fluid; substantially as described.
2. In charging apparatus, a grip-bar havin g a plurality of separated pockets arranged to contain water; substantially as described.
3. In charging apparatus, a grip-bar having a cavity with a closed bottom to receive a cooling fluid, and provided with a top feedopening, and a water supply arranged to feed water to the cavity when the grip-bar is outside the furnace; substantially as described.
