, JOHN L. TAYLOR, OFBOZEMAN, MONTAN A PARA-Tu's 'F-oR LIFTING WAGON-BOXES, 800.
' SPECIFICATION forrrifiag part of Letters Patent No. 698,338, dated April 22, 190 2 d A'pplicati0n filed Februaryih1902. Serial No 9 3,238. (No model.)
L0 (ZZZ whomit 7nay'c0ncer'rt: Be it known that I, JOHN L. TAYLOR, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Bozeman, in the county of Gallatin and" State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for-Lifting to the accompanying drawing, and to the let'- ters of reference marked. thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
Thisinvention relates'to new and useful improvements in hoisting devices, and espe cially to an apparatus forliftingwagon-boxes and various other articles; and it consists in the provision of a movable standard whichis mounted, preferably, upon wheels and is provided with handleswhereby the device may be moved from one place to another and adjacent to the wagon-box or other articles to be moved and in the provision of a Windlass suitably mounted on the standard and about WlllCll'WlHdlitSS a rope or chain having hooks connected thereto is adapted to be wound by means of a hand-wheel having gear connection with the Windlass. a
To these ends and to such others as the inther, in various details of construction, and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim. My invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing,in which I have shown aperspective view of my improved lifting device.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawing by letter, A designates the platform upon which the upright posts B are mounted and suitably braced,'as illustrated. A cross-beam O connects theiupper ends of said upright posts, which cross-beam is also braced and mountedin the bearings D, which are fastened to the side of the said upright, posts.
Near their upper ends is a Windlass E, to which oneend-of thechain or rope T is adapted to Wind as the Windlass is rotated. Keyed to one end of said Windlass is a gearwheel G, which is in mesh with a worm-wheel H, which is mounted upon and rotates with the shaft K, which shaftismounted, preferably, at an inclination in hearings in the cross-piece N and cross-piece at the upper ends'of said upright posts.- Ahand-wheel for tene d to the lower end of said shaft, and a collar or washer 0 is'fastened to said shaft. at a location adapted to rest upon the cross- "pieceN and is provided for the purpose of rotating said shaft is keyed or otherwise fas- A holding said shaft, so that theworm-wheel'on Q the shaft will be held in mesh withsaid garwheel at the end of the Windlass. The upper face of said cross-piece N isnotched, as at N, so that the under face of said collar-or washer it will rest flat against theinclinedfaoe-of the notch. g V Mounted under the end pieces of th'e platform or frame are wheels Q, whileintermediate the length of the longitudinal portiom'of Qthe standard-supportingframe is a legiR,
which cooperates with said wheels to hold the frame horizontally. Handles F project laterally from thelongitudinalfside beam of the frame, asshown, whereby one side of the device may be lifted to throw the weight. upon the wheels when it is desiredtolnove the lifting apparatus from one location toanothe'r,
By the peculiar construction of the framework of my improved liftingapparatugdn which one side isopen, it'wi-ll be observed that the device may bemoved so as tof'par tially surround a wagon-box orother articles to be lifted, and by 'means ofthef ho oks' wg which are fastened tothe ends ofthergpes'orchains connected'to the hoisting f'ropeqor chain, the article to be lifted maybe easily raised by manipulating the hand -',wheel,
upon the Windlass.
' Having thus described my invention, what I I claim to be new, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A device for lifting wagons and other articles, comprising a frame openupon one side,
Wheels mounted under the ends of said frame,
and a leg intermediate" the closed longitudi nal side of'the frame, whereby said frame may be held in ahorizontal plane, handles projecting from the edge of saidclosed side, n
upright posts mounted on'the ends of the frame and suitably braced, a Windlass jour- 7 9 which will cause the rope or chainto wind. v a
naled on said upright posts, a rope or chain upper face of said cross-piece being notched, secured to and adapted to wind upon said the under face of said collar or washer adaptwindlass and provided with hooks fastened ed to rest fiat against the inclined face of said to the end of said rope or chain, a gear-wheel notched portion as shown and described.
5 keyed to the end of the Windlass, a shaft, a In testimony whereof I hereunto afifix my :5
worm-wheel rotating with said shaft and in signature in presence of two witnesses.
mesh with said gear-wheel, a hand-Wheel for JOHN L. TAYLOR. rotating said shaft, a collar or washer fas- WVitnesses: tened to said shaft, a cross-piece fastened to JOHN R. SCAI-IILL,
no one of said uprights and the braces thereto, the JOHN E. BUSH.
