UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
FRIEDRICH GUNTHER, OF RECKLINGHAUSEN, GERMANY.
SELF-CLOSING DOOR FOR MlNES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 698,275, dated April 22, 1902.
Application filed June 14, 1901. Serial No. 64,608. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concerns Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH GiiNTHER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at 485 Hernerstrasse, Reoklinghausen, German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Self Closing Doors for Mines,of which the following is a specification.
The present invention consists of an improved door or gate for guarding the end of the mine-level adjacent to the shaft and is constructed in such a manner that there are no complicated parts easily thrown out of order, thus insuring the safety of the gate beyond all accident, while increasing its durability.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference refer throughout to similar parts, Figure 1 is a front view ofa gate embodying the present invention. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1 Fig. 3 is also a front viewillustratin g certain modifications.
In the construction of the gate an inverted- U -shaped bar b is employed, which is pivoted near its upper curved end by bolts an to the timbers of the level and adjacent to the shaft.
Guide-arms c c are mounted on the inner.
sides of the level to the timbers, and on these rest the ends of a foot-bard, which is loosely connected to the U -shaped bar aforesaid. Arms f are formed on the lift-frame e, as shown, Fig. 2. A cross rod h is pivoted from side to side of the level at a certain point above the Wagon and carries a number of chains 1' 7;, whose lower ends engage foot-bar (1, thereby forming a most elfective guardgate.
Fig.
In mines which are subject to irregular settlings, throwing the timbers out of plumb, the footbar may be replaced by a chain 75. v
The operation of the gate is obvious. The wagon g (shownin dotted lines in Fig. 1) is to be loaded on the lift. The miner swings the gate about into the shaft. The foot-bar d, (or the chain 10,) which is thereby shifted forward on the guide-arms c c, is caught by the arms ff of the rising lift and raised into the position indicated by dotted lines, (see Fig. 2,) thereby allowing access to the lift hanging in the shaft. When the said lift is either raised or lowered, the gate is automatically released, so that it dropslagain into the normal position, thereby closing the shaft from the level. When the lift is rising, the curved upper portion of bar I), guiding the ends of. the foot-bar, removes the said foot-bar from the arms f.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Let
