Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.-
PATRICK KELLY, OF NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPARK-ARRESTVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 69,817, dated October 15, 1867.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK KELLY, of Nashville, in the county ofDavidson and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Locomotive Smoke-Stacks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings, forming partof i my invention. Fig. 2 is a crosssection through the line @o of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the boiler. saddle of the smoke-stack. C is the drum or body of the smoke-stack. D is the smoke-fine.
Y E is a truncated cone surrounding the top of the flue D. E is an annular space around the due D. F is the spark arrester and deflector, which is placed directly over the ilue and cone D E. F is supported in its place by rods c c, which are attached to the iiue D. G is the cap, forming a conical-shaped chamber, in the B'is the base orV usual manner, in which the spark-arresting device is placed. This cap is surmounted by a band, H, which is attached to it, within which is an adjustable ring, c, which extends down below the top ofthe cap when desired, so that the draft of the chimney can be regulated and the sparks arrested thereby. J is aconductor or chute, which is attached to and surrounds the Hue D, placed diagonally on the tlue, as represented in the drawing. The lower ends do not join, but are so shaped that they form a spoilt for rthe discharge of the sparks into the tube K, from whence they drop onto the ground, beingconveyed through the smokebox and near to the ground by the tube.' The sparks, after passing up through the flue D, are arrested by F, and drop from thence onto the cone E, from whence they slide onto the bottom of the cap G. From thence they drop onto the conductor or chute J, which conveys them to the tube K, which discharges them through the smokebox to the ground, as before mentioned. Y
The tube K can be detached for the purpose of removing the trucks from under the locomotive when desired. v
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the spark-arrester F, cone E, ue D, drum O, cap G, conductor J, tube K, band H, and adjustable ring c, as herein set forth, for the purpose specified.
PATRICK KELLY.
