Be it known that I, DESIRE LEON BOUMAL, a citizen of Belgium, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoes, of which the followingis a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of this invention is to provide improved means for shoeing a horse or for connecting a shoe with the foot of a horse, a further object being to provide means whereby a shoe may be connected with a diseased hoof without driving nails into the hooi", whereby a hoof which is diseased or afiicted in any way may be protected until a cure is eected, and a further object being to provide improved means for securing a shoe to the foot of a horse, whereby a man may shoe his own horse without the necessity of going to a blacksmith; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a device or appliance of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings forming part of this speciiication, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, Figure l is a side view ot' my improved horseshoeing appliance and showing a shoe connected therewith; Fig. 2, a back view thereof,

In the practice of my invention I provide a device of the class specified comprising two similar substantially segmental portions a, which are hinged together at b, the point of connection at b being at the central front portion of the hoof when the device is applied thereto. The separate parts a of this device are designed to inclose the hoof and are preferably higher at the front than at the back and are also preferably of a height about equal to the height of the average hoof, and said' parts ci are preferably composed of sheet metal and are provided at the back portion thereof with backwardly-directed jaws c and c2, which are arranged in pairs and which are designed to be connected by bolts d, having nuts d2.

The inner parts of the jaws c2 are preferably slightly curved inwardly, as shown at c3, so as to make the device more closely fit the hoof, and secured to and within the bottom portions of the separate parts d of the device are segmental pieces or inwardly directed flanges e, composed of metal or any other suitable material and which are preferably from one-quarter to one-half of an inch thick,and these pieces e may be secured in position by rivets or screws, as shown at g, and one of said pieces is provided at its end with iiat dowel-pins h, which enter corresponding recesses in the ends of the other piece, which are shown in dotted lines at h2.

In practice the device, as shown in Fig. 3, is secured to the hoot oi' the horse by means of bolts d, and a shoe 7c is then secured to the bottom thereof by means of screws k2, any desired number of which may be employed, said screws passing into the segmental pieces eat 7c3. By means of this construction a shoe may be securely connected with the hoof of a horse without driving nails into the hoof, and the hoot will be protected, if such protection is necessary, and any one may quickly and easily shoe his Own horse.

Although I have described the parts a as composed of sheet metal and the parts e as composed also of metal and secured thereto, it will be apparent that these parts may all consist of castings, in which case the parts e will be provided with holes k3, as indicated in Fig. 3, to receive the screws 7a2, the shoe being also provided with holes, through which the screws are passed.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A device of the class described comprising two members a hinged together at b, said device being adapted to be secured to and to inclose the hoof of a horse, the connection with the hoof being such that the point where the separate members a are hinged together is, when the device is connected with the hoof, at the central front portion of said hoof, said members being also provided at their rear ends with projecting jaws by which they are secured to the hoof, said j aws being arranged in pairs and the bottom pair being set inwardly farther than the upper pair, and said separate members being also provided at the IDO bottom thereof with inwardly-directed flanges or supports to which a shoe may be secured, one of the members being also provided at each end with a projection adapted to enter a corresponding socket or recess iu the ends of the other member, substantially as shown and described.
