Description
- UNITED S me ATEN ERNEST E. YAXL Y, on CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
M AGNETO-BELL RINGER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 697,698 dated April 15, 1902. Application filed December 6,1901. fierlal No. 84,931- (No model.)
T0 a/ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST E. YAXLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicage, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Magneto-Bell Ringers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in magneto-bell ringers of the type commonly employed upon electric telephones.
My object is to provide certain improve ments, particularly in the construction of the armature-support, whereby it may be readily moved to adjust the armature with relation to the magnet-cores and operates to hold the parts in adjusted position with great security.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a magneto-bell ringer constructed with my improvements; Fig. 2,a section taken on line 2 in Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrow, and Fig. 3 a section online 3 in Fig. 2.
A3 are electromagnets having cores A B secured at their ends at oneend of the magnets by means of screws 00 to the attaching bar or yoke C. The permanent magnet D is secured to the yoke O by the screw 1). On the ends of the electromagnet-spools adjacent to the yoke O are disks 0, of insulating material, which fit around the cores. The conducting-wires X where they leave the magnets are looped around the spool-flanges,
through perforations therein and pass out beneath the disks 0, which clamp the wires and prevent them from contacting with the yoke C. At the opposite ends of the magnets the cores project a distance beyond the ends of the spools sufficient to present threaded end portions 01, as shown in Fig. 3.
E is a yoke of brass or other suitable nonmagnetizable material provided between its ends on opposite sides with parallel projecting flanges or cars e e and having openings 6 ,toward opposite ends to fit loosely over the threaded core ends (1.
The armatureF consists of a plate of suitable metal provided near opposite ends with hard-metal contacts fand midway between its ends in opposite sides with shallow bearing-sockets f f The socket f receives the pointed end of a bearing-pin g on the ear 6, and extending through a threaded opening in the ear 6 is an adjustable bearing-screw g, pointed at its inner end to engage the socket f of the armature. Thus the armature is pivotally held by the ping and screw g, the latter being adjustable and carrying a locking-nut g whereby it may be securely fas= tened in adjusted position. The yoke E is secured to the cores A 13 between clampingnnts h h, adjustable on the threaded ends d. The contacts f register with the centers of the ends of the cores, and the armature is positioned with relation to the cores by adjusting the yoke E on the threaded ends 61. This ad justment is eitectedby loosening and turning the clamping-nuts h h, and they are caused to press firmly against opposite sides of the yoke when the proper adjustment of the ar mature is effected. The armature carries midway between its ends the bell-striker F.
The principal feature of novelty lies in the construction of the means described for posi tioning and holding the armature. The elongated cores presenting the threaded end portions (1 withthe clamping-nuts h 71 form a very desirable'means for regulating the adj ustmeut of the armature-carrying yoke. The construction is particularly strong and durable, and the yoke is held firmly against loosening when once adjusted.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isa In a magneto-bell ringer, the combination of electromagnets having cores presenting projecting, threaded end portions, an armature-support comprising a yoke having openings to receive said cores, and adjustable nuts on each of the threaded end portions of the cores clamping the yoke between them, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ERNEST E. YAXLEY.
In presence of- ALBERT D. BAOOI, WM. B. DAVIES.
