SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 696,827, dated April 1, 1902. Application filedDecember 27,1901. serial No. 87,447. (No modeld To (all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JAMES E. LEEZER and WILLIAM R. MCPHERSON, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Tarenturn, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Shut-Offs for Gas-Lines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements inregulators,and relates more particularly to that class having an automatic shut-oft" to shut oif the gas when the supply in the main has been shut oft and provide novel means whereby the gas-supply remains shut off when the gas is again flowing in the main supply-pipe.
A further object of our present invention is to provide novel means that will permit the valve to be easily opened when the supply of gas in the main has been again turned on.
Our invention further contemplates to provide a device of this character that will be extremely simple in construction, strong, durable, and comparatively inexpensive to man ufacture.
It is well known that many accidents have been caused by the supply of gas in the main beingtemporarilyshutoff,therebyextinguishing all the lights and the gas used for fuel purposes, and that when the gas is again turned on in the main it willescape and in this manner cause the death by asphyxiation of persons occupying the building.
It is the object of our present invention to overcome all such difficulties and to provide an automatic cutoff that will remain closed until the regulator is operated to permit the gas to again flow through the supply-pipes in the dwelling or building.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail referonce is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views,in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of our improved gas-regulator and automatic shut-off. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. l is a transverse vertical sectional View taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a top plan View of Figs. 1 and 2 with the cover removed.
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 represents a supply-pipe leading from the main, and 2 represents a supply-pipe leading to the building or dwelling. Intel-posed between said supply-pipes is secured a casing 3, said casing having formed therein a gaschamber l. In said gas-chamber is secured a partition 5. In the upper face of the gaschamber 4 is formed a port 6, leading to the upper gas-chamber 7 said gas-chamber 4: on each side of the partition 5 having formed therein ports 8 and 9.
The reference numeral 10 represents a standard secured in the upper gas-chamber 7, between the ports 6 and 8, said standard having bifurcated ends 11, in which is pivotally secured at 12 the lever 14, carrying valves 15 and 16, the valve 15 being designed to close the port 6, while the valve 16 closes ports 8 9, the latter valve beinglarger and of greater weight than the valve 15.
The reference-numeral 17 represents a setscrew extending through the casing 18, forming the upper gas-chamber 7, which setscrew is in alinement with and is secured directly above the lever 14. The said casing 18 carries outwardly-extending flanges 19, which have formed therein screw-threaded apertures 20 to receive bolts 21, which serve to secure the same'tothe casing 3.
The operation of our improved device is as follows: The gas flowing through the main through the gas-supply pipe 1 into the gaschamber it will pass upwardly through the port 8 against the under face of the valve 16, the pressure of the gas retaining the valve in an elevated position. The gas will then pass downwardly through the port 9 into the supply-pipe 2 and will then flow through distributing-pipes in the dwelling, which are not shown in the drawings. In case the gassupply in the main is temporarily out ofi, the pressure being released from the'under side of the valve 16, the latter being of greater weight than the valve 15 will automatically close, forming a cut-off, which will close the ports 8 and 9. Simultaneously with this operation the valve 15 will rise, opening the port 6, and when the gas is again turned on in the main the gas will enterthe port 6 into the upper gas-chamber 7 and will exert a downward pressure upon the valve 16, thereby further assuring the closing of said ports.
When it is desired to placev the regulator inan operative position, the set-screw 17 is operated, which will bear against the upper face of the lever and tend to force the valve 15 downwardly upon its seat, thereby opening the valve 16, which will place the regulator in its normal position and allow the same to act in the manner as hereinbefore described.
The many advantages obtained by the use of our improved regulator and cut-off will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of our invention.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a casing having an upper and a lower gas-chamber formed therein with a partition secured in the lower gas-chamber and ports formed in the upper face of the lower gas-chamber, one of said ports being on one side of the partition and the other of said ports on the other side thereof, a third port formed in the upper face of the lower gas-chamber, a lever pivotally mounted in the upper gas-chamber, a valve carried on one end thereof for closing the last-named port leading into the lower gaschamber, and a valve of greater size than the first-named valve carried on the other end of said lever and adapted to close both of said first-named ports formed in the upper face of the lower gas-chamber, the gas entering one of the first-named ports on the one side of the partition and supporting the valve of greater size and flowing through the other of said ports formed on the other side of the partition, substantially as described. 2. In a device of the character described, the combination with the casing having an upper and a lower gas chamber formed therein, with a partition formed in the lower gas-chamber, the ports formed on each side of the partition in the upper side of the lower gas-chamber, anda third port formed in the upper side of the lower gas-chamber, of a pair of valves movable in unison mounted within the upper gas-chamber, one of said valves closing the last-mentioned port and the other of said valves closing the ports on each side of said partition, the gas entering through the port on one side of the partition raising the valve and supporting the same and flowing through the other of the said ports on the other side of the partition, substantially as described.
