To all whom it may concern-.-

Be it known that I, FRANKLIN O. HOLMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bags for Remedial Applications, (Case No. 1,) of which the followingis a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improved means for applying emollients or other remedial applications to portions of the body.

More particularly, my invention relates to apparatus by means of which poultices or other emollients. when applied to the body may be retained at a suitable temperature, so that their effect may be prolonged over a considerable space of time, thereby overcoming the necessity of frequently replacing poultices.

Generally speaking, my invention comprises in its preferred embodiment a suitable bag, which may be filled with water or other medium which has ahigh specific heat and which When heated loses its heat slowly, this bag being provided with a suitable pocket or attachment wherein the emollient or poultice may be placed. The poultice is then placed next to the body where its effect is needed, and the water-bag associated therewith retains the poultice at the required temperature for a considerable space oftime.

I will explain my invention in detail by reference to the accompanying drawings, illustrating one embodiment thereof, in which Figure l is a front view of my improved means, portions being broken away more clearly to reveal features of construction. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.

In carrying out my invention I employ a suitable water-bag 0., preferably constructed of rubber in a well-known manner, which water-bag is provided with a circular neck 1), into which a stopper 0 is fitted. This stopper is provided with a screw-threaded exterior, so that when in place in the neck Z) a tight and effective closure of the bag is maintained. The neck I) is also provided with flaring sides to form a preferably funnel-shaped inlet (Z, so that water or other liquid may be readily poured into the interior of the bag a. A strap 6 is preferably fastened to the inlet portion d, so that the bag may be readily held or carried by it. The lower extremity of the bag is provided with an extension f, having an eyelet for the purpose of suitably hanging the bag in an inverted position to permit of the egress of all the water or other liquid contained therein.

The bag or receptacle a isprovided with a pocket .on one side thereof formed by a flap or cover 9, secured to one side of the bag a along the seam h. The remaining side of the flap is unfasten ed, but is provided with clasps t' t, which are adapted to engage corresponding headpieces Z Z, fastened to ears or m, provided at one side of the bag-a. The cover g is preferably provided with a central opening at, through which the poultice or other remedial application may project to come in closer contact with the body. The pocket formed by one side of the bag a and the cover 9 is of sufficient size to receive a oultice-bag 0, which may be of any suitable material and which may be filled with any requisite remedial application, such as meal, bread, herbs, or the like. A portion of the poultice-bag may project through the opening it, provided in the cover 9, as is well illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3.

When it is desired to use my improved means, a poultice-bag containing the healing or soothing medium is placed within the pocket formed by the cover g, and water or other suitable liquid is introduced into the bag a at the required temperature. The poultice, together with the bag a, is then applied where necessary, the water serving to keep the remedial application in the poultice-bag at the required temperature.

It will be seen that I have provided an improved water bag having in combination therewith a supplemental side or cover which forms with an opposed side of the bag a pocket. The supplemental cover is provided with a restricted opening, whereby the contents of the pocket may be accessible and whereby the imperforate portion of the cover surrounding the restricted opening may serve to hold the contents of the pocket in position.

By this construction objectionable fastening strings may be dispensed with, While at the same time the contents of the pocket may widely vary in size, there being no other agency for holding the said contents in position excepting the supplemental cover and the opposed side of the bag. By this construction a very smooth and practically continuous surface may be afforded by the supplemental cover and the contents of the pocket where the same are applied to the flesh of the patient. Moreover, the imperforate portions of the supplemental cover in addition to forming a practically continuous surface with the protruding remedial substance also serve to retain the heat, preventing rapid radiation thereof,
