Gawzgwm UNITED STATES ATENT Prion] KARL RENDSOIIMIDT, OF BERLIN, GERMANY.
FLASH-LIGHT CARTRIDGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 696,270, dated. March 25, 1902.
Application filed January 16,1902. Serial No. 90.012. (No model.)
To LtZZzUr/om it' may concern:
Be it known that I, KARL RENDscHMIDr, engineer, a citizen of the Kingdom of Prussia, and a resident of Berlin, Germanydwhose post-office address is Wilsnackerstrasse 19,) have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flash Light Cartridges, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to Hash-light cartridges which have been formed by compressing measured quantities of magnesium orsimilarpowder into the form of small cakes or tablets. It is a known fact that by compressing ilash-light powder into solid masses the iniammability of same is considerably reduced and that ignition only will be possible by aid of a peculiar primer. The photographer who intends to use these cartridges is therefore obliged to carry primers besides the cartridges.
The object of the present invention, of which Figure l of the accompanying drawings shows a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a vertical section, is a cartridge which, besides the necessary quantity of magnesium, dac., powder also `contains the primer, which is easily separated from the cartridge proper and then is easily ignited by means of saltpeter paper, causing by its ignition the explosion of the cartridge. t
The cartridge may have any convenient form-square, round, hexagonal, 85o. A small part of it, which is separated from the rest by a groove, may be easilyv broken off and pulverized between the fingers, this powder serving for aprimer.
In the drawings, a is the cartridge, which has the form of a -ilatlround disk.` A small part b of the same may be` easily broken off, a groove c facilitating said operation. f As it will be difficult to disintegrate the part bwhen the cartridge is heavily'compressed, and as, on the other handLit is of great importance to reduce the volume of the cartridge and render it as hard as possible I intend to form the cartridges in such a way that .the cartridge proper will be highly compressed, Whereas the detachable primer is of softer consistency.
For that purpose I proceed in manufacturing the cartridges in such a way that I do not distribute the flash-light powder uniformly over the whole form in which the pressing is done, but bring in the powder in such a way thata thicker layer is formed on the part corresponding to the cartridge proper and a thinner one on the part to be occupied by the primer. The disk on entering the form therefore will compress the former part stronger than the latter one.
In order to do away with the necessity of carrying saltpeter paper for igniting the primer, the Whole cartridge may be wrapped in a piece of same and may be brought in thisA form into the market. -Each cartridge then contains al1 that is necessary for making a Hash-light exposure.
What I claim is- 1. A dash-light cartridge of compressed Hash-light powder, part of which may beeasily separated from the rest, said part serving after disintegration as a primer for igniting the cartridge proper.
2. A flash-light cartridge consisting of the cartridge proper and the primer, said primer being easily detached from the cartridge, said cartridge and primer forming a homogeneous mass.
3. A flash-light cartridge, comprising the cartridge proper and an easily detachable' primer, the cartridge containing the powder in highly-compressed state, whereas the powder forming the primer is less compressed.
' 4. Process 4for manufacturing flashy-light cartridges consisting of a cartridge properand an easily-detachable primer, consisting in iilling the part of the form corresponding tothe cartridge proper with a thicker layer of powder than the part corresponding to the primer. v
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
KARL RENDSCHMIDT.
