To @ZZ whom it may conceive:
Be it known that I, FRANK HoLBRooK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Nozzles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to hose-nozzles, and more particularly to hose-nozzles designed for use on the hose of chemical fireextinguishing apparatus.
The nozzles now commonly employed on chemical fire-extinguishers are provided with the usual ground-cock, which must be accurately fitted in its bearing in order to prevent leakage. Experience with such cocks has demonstrated that they are untted for this purpose, as under the action of the chemicals employed in the iire-extinguishin g liquids the iitting of the cock in its bearing is rapidly destroyed and soon leaks, causing much damage to carpets and draperies when used in extinguishing a iire which may be localized, as in a closet or corner of a room, and by .reason of the caking of the chemicals about the valve rendering it dilcult to operate. To overcome the objection to the use of a valve such as referred to, it has been proposed to employ a reciprocating valve movable longitudinally along its chamber toward and from the valve-seat. The rod carrying this valve was actuated by a nut threaded thereto, which was located so as to begrasped by the hand and turned to actuate the valve. This construction was found to be a vast improvement on the other and to eectually prevent leakage at the valve; but it was found that in the hurry and confusion attendant on fighting a fire there was great liability of unscrewing thenozzle from the hose while attempting to turn the nut to open the valve, and if the nozzle should be thus loosened or accidentally removed from the hose the objectionable leakage and flowing of chemicals over places where not desired would result to great damage in some instances to furniture and draperies.
The object of the present invention is to produce a valve for the nozzles of chemical lire-extinguishing apparatus which can at all times be easily and quickly operated and one in which there can be no leakage.
To the above ends the present invention consists of the devices and combinations of devices, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
The present invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-V Figurel shows a nozzle in front elevation embodying the same. Fig. 2 shows the device in side elevation. Fig. 3 shows a sectional longitudinal view illustrating the interior construction. Fig. 4 shows a plan view with the forwardv section removed looking at the top of the valve, and Fig. 5 shows the lower end of the forward section and the valve-seat.
Similar reference characters will be employed throughout the specification and drawings to designate corresponding parts.
In the illustrated embodiment of the present invention the hose-nozzle is formed in tWosections-fa forward section 1 and a rear section 2. any suitable metal, preferably brass, and are formed with the male and female couplings 3 and 4, provided with the mating threads 5, whereby the sections are connected together. The lower section 2 has .a threaded socket 6, arranged to receive the mating coupling at the end of the hose on the extinguishing apparatus. The sections 1 and 2 are bored or chambered from end to end to permit The sections 1 and 2 are cast of' the passage of the fire-extinguishing liquids therethrough, and the section 1 is provided with a port '7, arranged to be closed by the valve 8. Surrounding the port 7 is a valve seat 9, formed of leather orother suitable material and against which the 'valve 8 is arranged to be pressed in closing the port 7. The valve 8 consists of a notched disk arranged to reciprocate in a chamber 10,formed in the upper end of the section 2, and it is provided with lugs 1l, through which is passed a pin 12, which connects the valve 8 with a link 13. The link 13 at its lower end is provided With an eccentric-band 14, arranged to ICG engage an eccentric 15, carried by a shaft 1G, which at one end is seated in a bearing or seat 17, (see dotted lines, Fig. 3,) formed in a boss 1S integral with the wall of a substantially circular chamber 19. The other side of the chamber 19 is closed by a cap 20,which has a threaded connection therewith, and provided with a bearing for the opposite end of the shaft 16. Aturning of the shaft 16 causes the eccentric 15 to reciprocate the link 13 to move the valve 8 toward or away from the valve-seat, closing or opening the port 7. The shaft 16 at one end is square, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2, and upon the squared end is placed a lever 20X, which is connected by means of arod orpin21 withacorresponding;r lever 22, heldby a screw and washer 23 on;a stud or boss 2%,projecting from the closed side of the chamber 19. The lever 2O is held to the end of the shaft 1G by means of a screw and washer 25, tapped into the end of the shaft.
As shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings when the levers 2O and 22 are moved forward they cause the eccentric 15 to advance the link 13, forcing the valve S tightly against the valveseat 9, closing the port 7, and stopping the fiow of liquid from the apparatus. Byrocking the levers backward or, as shown, in position Figs. 1 and 2 the eccentric 15 draws back the link 13, removing the valve 8 from contact with the valve-seat 7 and permitting the chemical liquid to liow around and through thc notches in the periphery of said valve out of the port 7 and from the nozzle in a stream under considerable pressure.
1t will be noted that in the present invention there is no possible chance for a leakage about the valve or in the nozzle, as the valve does not turn in its bearing, but has a reciprocating action toward and from the port. 1t will be further noted that the lever and eccentric for actuating the valve provide considerable leverage, whereby the valve may be quickly and readily moved toward and from its seat.
Having described my invention, I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States- A hose-nozzle provided with a suitable port and a valve-seat surrounding said port, a notched disk valve mounted in a valve-chamber and arranged to be moved toward and from said valve-seat, a link connected at one end to one side of said disk valve and provided at its opposite end with an eccentric band or strap, a transversely-arranged shaft provided with an eccentric engaged by said eccentric band or strap and a pair of levers provided with a connecting-bar for turning said eccentric-shaft to reciprocate said valve,A
substantially as described.
