JEAN BAYARD, OF LYONS, FRANCE.
WATER-SUPPLYING DEVICE OR THE LIKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 695,367, dated March 11, 1902. Application filed October 15,1901. SeriaI No. 78,670. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEAN BAYARD, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at No. 27 Rue de la Riz, in the city of Lyons, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Supplying Devices and the Like, (for which I have made application in France, dated March 20, 1901, No. 309,246,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new device for regulating the flow of water which is applicable to water posts, cocks, and, in fact, to every form of apparatus for causing a flow of water or liquids.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one method of carrying out this invention, Figure 1 illustrates in vertical section the application of this invention to a waterpost. Fig. 2 is a back View of the casing. Fig. 3 is a detail view 011 alarger scale. Fig.
4 is a modification. Fig. 5 is a vertical section showing this invention as applied to a cock.
Like letters indicate like parts throughout the drawings.
Referring first to Figs. 1 to 4, the water is admitted by a pipe a, which communicates with the water-main by'way of'a vertical valve b. The movement of this valve is controlled by a rod 0, contained within the pipe at, from which it emerges through a stuffingbox cl. The upper end of this rod is provided with two fixed collars c 0, between which is a loose collar 6 connected to the lower ends of links e, the upper ends of which are in turn pivoted to the weighted governor-arms 6. These governor-arms e are pivoted at their upper ends to a short vertical shaftf mounted in a fixed bearing and provided at its upper end with a bevel-wheel f, engaging with a second bevel-wheel f, which receives its movement from a fly-wheel g, placed outside the casing h of the water-post. As will be noticed, normally the valve brests on its seating. If the flywheel g is rotated so as to rotate the pendulum device '6, the centrifugal force will raise the balls, together with the rod 0, and the valve 1) will be opened. Wa-
ter coming from the main will rise up the pipe a and through the tube a and will arerin-receptacle.
rive atthe ta a. It is evident that the flow of water rises only during rotation of the flywheel g. The rod 0 may be of any suitable length, and it will be noticed that itis possible to place the valve 1) Where it will not be affected by cold or frost. Besides, to prevent the freezing of the water which collects in the pipe at there is situated toward the bottom of the pipe an opening 2', allowing the Water remaining in the pipe a to be drawn. otf after each operation, if necessary.
The following advantages of this device are noticeable: There is no hammeraction in this arrangement. The pipes cannot become choked. The cap cannot be left turned on, as it is always necessary for the handle to be turning to procure a flow of water. The flywheel 9 is situated in a recess in the valvecasing. Below this recess the side of the easing comprises a movable plate by which access to the inside can be obtained.
As indicated in Fig. 4, the valve-actuating rod may pass through a casingj seventy-five centimeters to one meter in depth, at the bottom of which is situated the stuffing-box, in which is placed, as atj, some glycerin. The cover-plate j is constructed to close the glyc- The casing j may be filled with packing. It will be seen that by this arrangement the stuffing-box will be completely sheltered from the cold and frost.
Referring to Fig. 5, the water arrives from the main through the pipe 70 of the cock. Normally this pipe is closed by the verticallymoving valve Z, operated by the pendulum or governor device, device similar to that described with reference to Figs. 1 to 4:. This pendulum can be turned by means of the gearing m, actuated by a crank o. In this figure the weighted arms e are pivoted to a short shaft e journaled in the top of the inclosing casing A, and the links 2 at their lower ends are pivoted to a short shaft 0 which passes down through a bearing a in the bottom of the casing A. The shaft 0 is provided with a longitudinal bore extending from its lower end, and in this bore loosely fits the stem Z of the valve Z. If the crank is rotated, as in the previous case, the centrifugal force will raise the balls of the pendulum device and also the valve Z, allowing the water to pass from the pipe 70 into the pipe 70 and from there flow out at the tap.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a Water-supplying apparatus the combination of a valve, a valve-rod and a centrifugal pendulum connected thereto and means for operating the same substantially as described.
2. In a Water-supplying apparatus the combination of a water-pipe in communication with the water-main and provided at its end with a tap, a valve, a rod, a pendulum device e connected to the rod-gearing to rotate the pendulum device and a stutfing-box 01 substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In a Water-s11 pplyin g apparatus the 00 n1- blnation of a Water-pipe in communication with the Water-main and provided at its end 20 with a tap, a valve, a rod, a pendulum device 6 connected to the rod-gearing to rotate and means for operating the pendulum de- 0 vice substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
